>what else do you need? our social security?

No -- just your account balance. An account balance is sufficient information to steal all the money from your account.

Actually, it's pretty neat the way it works. Just go to a bank and tell the teller: "I'd like to withdraw all the money from the account that has a current balance of $53,898.66" -- and they'll just give the money to you, no questions asked. You don't even need to know the name or the account number or anything else. Amazingly, you don't even need to know which bank holds the account, because every bank has access to every other bank's account via the inter-bank network. It's pretty remarkable, really.

I know that feel, I've had it all my adult life.

I've always been obsessive about saving money and putting as much as possible in the stock market for long-term growth.

Then the market recovery began (starting in March 2009), and so for the past 8 years my net worth has gone up by a huge amount, more than I could have possibly imagined. But I'm still nervous about whether I have enough.

Yeah, I decided at a young age that I would do everything solo. That way it forces me to learn everything I need to learn, so I can keep an eye on everything myself. All I do is just put my money in the broad stock market (mostly big companies, like S&P 500). I simply buy and hold for the long term. No fancy stuff. No day trading or shorting. No "getting in on the ground floor" of speculative deals or anything. Just nice, stable huge corporations, holding their stock for as long as possible.

>What will you do if the stock market crashes?
>it could take years for them to get back to the value they were at before the crash

Having lived through both the 2000 and the 2008 crash, I think about that every single day of my life.

I'm fully aware that every day that I leave my money in the stock market, it's exactly like playing a casino with my life's savings.

To mitigate that, I have about two years of living expenses in CDs. If the market goes bad, then it means that I will have to refrain from doing any selling as long as the market is down. (I might buy, tho.) The CDs will hopefully get me through the bad years.

Having that much money in CDs means that I can't fully participate in the stock market. Only 70% of my net worth is in stock, so that limits how much I can enjoy the upside. But I think of that CD money as basically an "insurance policy" against having a bad stock market for a few years.

> Our growth is unsustainable, something has got to give eventually.

Yes, I am prepared for the possibility that there could be a steep and permanent drop in stock prices that will last the rest of my life. That's another reason why I make sure that I have a certain percentage of my money is in CDs.

When the stock market is at its peak and my percentage of stock drifts about 70%, then that triggers me to sell enough to take my percentage back down under 70%. I've sold three times this year so far because of the new highs we have been having since January.

I can't say that I've got the perfect strategy. But I've done enough reading to know that there's probably not a whole lot I can do to improve my current strategy. If you want to be in the market, then you've got to take the risk, and you've got to know how much risk you can take on. And if you're not in the market, then inflation will eat you alive over the decades. There's no way of avoiding those basic facts, so you're forced into a position of risk whether you like it or not.

Thanks for the lengthy reply. I've just started investing in retirement plans (21) and I got hit with the reality of how volatile it all is. I only have 11k in right now and it still makes me sick thinking about how much value could be lost overnight due to factors outside of my control. It makes me wonder if I should be doing any buying at all or if I should just wait until the next potential recession to buy.

I've never seen a point for CDs before reading your post. They have the rates listed on the wall at my bank, and they're pretty awful. But I see why you have yours. It must be better than just letting tens of thousands of dollars sit in the bank like some of the posters in this thread allegedly have.

I am supposed to see the eye doctor every 3 months too but had to quit doing that, the insurance quit covering it a few years ago and without it that's over a grand a month.

>it still makes me sick thinking about how much value could be lost overnight due to factors outside of my control

Yep, it sucks. But stocks have historically had a better return than the other common investments (bonds, real estate, etc.)

Here's two things I keep in mind about stocks:

1: When you make a stock profit, you've earned that money. The reason you earned it is because you had to put up with all the bullshit, irrational, emotional actions of all the other other people who make stock prices go up and down for no goddamn reason other than their own personal fears and stupidity. You earn your stock profits by putting up with their irrational bullshit.

2: The system is totally rigged in favor of stock owners. Every corporate charter says that the #1 goal of the corporation is to make a profit for the stock holders. They employ teams of lobbyists to make sure that Congress gets bribed so that stock prices keep going up. If executives make decisions that hurt the stock price, they can get sued by the shareholders -- so even the legal system is rigged in favor of stocks. Every rich person uses their influence to keep stock prices as high as possible. And since those rich people own Congress, then that's Congress's goal too.

Now look at bonds. There's nobody in power who wants bonds to yield higher interest. The Fed has only two goals: minimize unemployment and keep inflation under control. Nowhere in the Fed's mandate is the goal of giving bond holders a good interest rate. Every politician wants low interest rates so the government can borrow money without having to pay much interest on it. That's why bonds suck.

> CDs
> they're pretty awful

They sure are. But there's nothing you can do about it. If you want to be safe from market volatility, you can either earn 0% interest by keeping a wad of $100 bills in your safe, or else you can earn 1% interest in a CD. And 1% beats 0% every time, so that's the way you play it.

Any investment tips from the well off bots? I'm not asking for immediate returns or anything I just need something steady to pay off my secured card properly

I'm technically living paycheck to paycheck and I won't get my deposit and credit limit increase in a few weeks if I don't fix it.

Just a trust fund baby. Average day is quite similar to the average NEET robot except maybe better food and more access to vidya. I do figure collecting so that sometimes gets quite expensive.

That is resume suicide bud. Try and do something substantial with your time besides DUDE GAP YEAR LMAO
>>
>>37288694
My priorities are; my son is fed, happy and cared for. I'd never beg to provide for him, but I'm not above begging for myself. Either way, it's probably a no.

"I'm sorry anon, we can't hire you because you were so good at making money that you went on vacation for three months."

I think the real message you're missing here is that Anon doesn't have to give a fuck about """"jobs"""" like that. He has more in the bank than you'll make in your lifetime.
>>
>>37288784
This probably sounds autistic but I don't like people who just come to me for money. It's pretty obvious at this point to discern between people who want me for my money and those who don't really care. I have never once met a girl who was interested in me as a person, they were just after my money. Those who don't really care are my friends now but they live far away and I only have 2 anyways. Going back to what you were saying, I just want to meet someone who cares for something else other than just my money. This means no hookers, no gold diggers, no prostitutes. It's pretty autistic but I want to at least find love in my uneventful life.

125k is not really that much for someone who is almost 30 anon
>>
1400 chequing
5700 spread over 3 savings accounts
15k truck I owe nothing on
240k house if I sold would get 40k back.

Age 22

I feel you.

That's very strong of you to make that decision, best of luck
>>
>>37288922

Yes, which is why it's even sadder that he has more in the bank than you'll make in your lifetime, a point I noticed you are reluctant to address - because you know it's true, and shameful.

Guys, ask anyone who has been in the industry for awhile. People with gaps in their resume longer than a month are binned when it's for a highly competitive position. It's nothing personal, just a way of weeding out applicants.
>>

I work in IT and you are retarded.

also if that anon is doing what he says he probably has prospects at other firms lined up for when he gets back, not uncommon at all

a 3 month gap is nothing, I don't even list that shit on my resume, just from 2005 to 2008 I worked here from 2009 to 2014 I worked there etc..

3 months does not even show up

I was neet for 7 months once about 8 years ago, nobody has ever called me on it

Software Engineer here, actually one of the ways that account accesses are confirmed is through balances and adding a certain amount and knowing the end balance for a card. It's a bit more complicated than that, but it is possible.

That living in Boca is cheap, it's one of the most expensive places to live in the country.

And while florida has no income tax it has high property and sales taxes to make up for it, rent and housing is expensive

Im 18 and own multiple yachts, i made around 30 million in 2016, and i spend my firday nights on /r9k/
