It doesn't really alter the taste of the drink too much, just adds that alcoholic 'kick', depending on how much you add and what you mix it with. Some drinks mask it well, others not so much., but after the first 2 drinks or so you stop tasting it unless you pour huge measures.

To me it never felt like a problem even when I was getting hammered alone most days. I knew it was, but because I was doing it out of simple boredom it didn't feel like it. Fortunately I got really sick from drink and had to go to hospital for a few days and that finally gave me a good enough reason to quit it. I haven't had a drink in 2 years but I still dream about it all the time, including last night. But it's still better this way.

Flavourless is the goal but is pretty well impossible because you're getting your sugar from an original source and some flavour will translate to the final product. The quality and source of sugar from your mash and water filters are the most import factors for flavour because it will help eliminate any flavours from poorer quality bases as well as smoothness. Yes it is largely just chemistry with but the difference between consumer vodka and premium vodka are just those things.
