Different mosquito species have different strategies for winter survival.
The larger mosquitoes in Alaska and the Yukon survive overwinter inside buildings or in warmer areas. When spring arrives, these mosquitoes return to the outdoors. They are slow and easy to kill at this point. It is my belief that they enter a torpor over the winter, similar to hibernation, and that when they emerge in the spring, they are weak and clumsy.
The smaller mosquitoes which become common in the summer hatch from eggs that are laid in water and remain dormant over the winter. When the water warms to a certain point, the eggs hatch and the mosquitoes emerge. These mosquitoes are real shitbirds and are faster/more difficult to kill.
