Snakes aren't dangerous. You're far more likely to be mauled and killed by a dog.

Snakes arent even fit for consumption.

Proud snek daddy to a dumeril's boa. Had him 10 years now, about 40 inches as well. Moved across country and miss him dearly

Nice, what kind of red tail boa is that?

This is my carpet python mix, names Willow. Old pic, she's about five feet now
>>
do you feed them mice? or what?
>>
>>36977456
A dumerils is a lot smaller than mine. Mines only a year old.

>>36977461
She just looks like a jungle to me.
Mines not a red tail at all. He's a het-hypo central american boa constrictor.

>>36977480
I buy prekilled frozen rats.

Doesn't it try and fuck you up?
>>
>>36977606
It could harm it, but most snakes wont touch it until it's warm or starts to stink.

>>36977626
No, my snakes have never tried to harm anyone. Read less buzzfeed, snakes arent dangerous.

>>36977580
I suggest a male boa constrictor. It's a bit bigger but it's so much more rewarding to care for.
>>
>>36977661
Don't even male boa constrictors get ~ 6ft? I'd like a snake that big but I'm a little worried about being able to take care of something that big for basically my first snake.
>>
>>36977780
That's also in the normal size range for a ball python though.
If you're worried about size then I'd suggest a king snake.
>>
>>36977661
>Read less buzzfeed,
What? Shut the fuck up I'll bang you the fuck out you gobby little cunt.
>>
>>36977835
Go tell your normie friends about that time a corn snake was sizing up your mutt.
>>
>>36977819
Oh I was thinking ball pythons were more like 3-4 foot range for males at least. I guess it really just depends on how much space I have because I've got no opposition to any size that I can give proper housing. Do they get much harder to take care of us they grow in your experience?

>>36977929
Males generally stay smaller but I've fostered a 6 foot male before.
Boas calm down a lot once they get bigger. The biggest challenge is their appetite but snakes in general don't cost much to feed. A 6-7 foot boa still only costs about 15 dollars a month to feed.

I suggest the kingsnake. It will get about 5-6 feet long at max but stays way skinnier than any python or boa. It's a good first snake too. Even wild kings are really tame. They're active and love to eat, unlike ball pythons.
>>
>>36978003
I hadn't heard too much about king snakes but they seem like easy keepers. The smaller size seems more manageable with little experience too. I know that sometimes ball pythons fast for a while which would probably stress me which was my biggest negative for them. So many cool snakes so little space to put them

>>
>>36978195
I'm a snake autist.
That habit of fasting is why I don't suggest ball pythons to beginners. I've never once had an issue feeding a ball python but I've heard horror stories about them deciding to go on 8 month fasts before.
Remember that most kings are the same species so most care guides are fine. They live across most ecosystems in north america and are really adaptable because of it.
>>
>>36978245
Yea I try to tamp down my snake autism because I can't get one for a while but every so often I spend hours looking at different kinds of snakes and the cool enclosures people have for them. That's exactly what I've heard about ball pythons, some eat fine their whole lives but others refuse for months at a time almost every year. Any idea on life expectancy for kings? What I did like about the ball pythons was they could live for 20 ~ 30 years so I could be bros with for him for life.
>>
>>36978395
10-15 is normal, so about the same as a ball python.

I've personally broken a lot of people pythons hunger strikes. It's mostly about understanding the snake and why it doesn't want to eat. They're not smart at all compared to other snakes, but they're very personable.

The lifespan is why I like boas. Boas generally live about 30 years but 40 years has been reported.

I suggest making a decent sized planted enclosure for your snake before you get it. Read up on bioactive enclosures and buy a thermostat. Live plants keep it humid, but fresh and microfauna keeps it clean and keeps the system alive.\

>>36978612
What a silly snake.
I'd have sown some heat pads in it to make it work better
>>
>>36978510
Anything over 10 isn't too bad but 30 would be perfect for me I think. Most of their fasting is due to their "mating season" right? That or maybe some of them wobble so bad they can't eat effectively? I've seen people successfully make them eat but I'd really rather avoid that process for my first go.

Live plants would be my ideal setup since I'm also into terrariums so it's a double hobby for me. Can you still do the hot side / cooler side as easily with the live plants? I know balls like it like that so I assume other snakes do too but that could be wrong.
>>
>>36978783
Yeah, just design the substrate layer with a heat mat in mind. My boa enclosure has a cave in it I made out of a burrow and a cork round I cut in half.
You could also turn cork rounds into planters to put it there.
The golden rule for live enclosures is to make them larger than average.
>>
snakes are boring, what's the appeal? i knew someone who had one and it just seemed to be a pain in the ass

My snake is pretty sociable.
He enjoys being taken out of his enclosure and likes how warm humans are.
Earning a snakes trust is also rewarding. The enclosures are nice decor too.

maybe the snake i knew was just shitty, i had a cat like that but met cats that were dope. not hating but it's interesting to see what others have to say
>>
>>36979419
Remember that if you neglect any animal it's going to end up unsocialized and feral.
Just because "it's just a cat" or "it's just a snake" isn't an excuse to neglect it. The only thing at fault if they own an unsocialized animal is the owner.

>>
>>36981364
Bug eating snakes are a lot harder to care for and are really small.
Prekilled rodents are a lot easier to keep. Just thaw it out and dangle it in front of them. I keep a bag in my freezer
>>
>>36979622
Wouldn't someone with a large eye not only have shit vision but also bad depth perception?
>>
>>36981532
You always use a scope with one eye though
>>
>>36981390
Oh, ok. Feeding a snake dead mice would make me feel kind of sad since I used to have a pet mouse, so a pet snake isn't in my future I guess.
>>
>>36981554
Yeah but a person with two eyes would be just as good or even a better marksman than someone with one eye.
>>
>>36981603
Not if they relied entirely on a scope. You keep one eye closed to use it.
So one eye would be fine. One far more advanced eye would be better.
Whats worse is people questioning how realistic a harem anime about monster girls.

>>36977405

>>
>>36981951
I do not need any global rules. I have my own rules.
>>
>>36982313
Kings rarely bite. They're really docile, even wild ones arent biters. Ask someone at the pet store if you can handle the snake first.

Any pet store will carry enclosure locks. It's pretty much a bent piece of metal that clamps a lid down.
