The only maintenance issues I've had are replacing the tires, and some of the gaskets need to be replaced and the carb might need a rebuild. This was because it wasn't used very much often. Honestly I'd consider spending at least 2k to get a FI bike. just check out the deals in person if you've got some mechanical knowledge. if you're unsure, bring a buddy. inspect it good, listen to it good. i bought a 200 euro gsx600 from '91 with 66k on the clock that just had to be reassembled. fixed basic shit like spark plugs, tyres, cleaned carbs, adjusted valves and gasket, brake fluid, stuff like that. no problems so far apart from the sprockets and chain coming up. now 200 is a bit on the adventurous side so if you've got some decent income something between 1000 and 2000 will definitely do the job, especially if you're mechanically inclined.

80s bikes are still working fine ( and a shit ton of fun). some properly loved 70s ones do as well if you want to go all vintage for some reason. obviously anything 90s and upwards will have no problem at all as long as some idiot previous owner hasn't completely messed it up like you see on some of those craigslist ads. glad im from europe that way.

do check for rust with older bikes ( before mid-90s) to get an idea of how it's been stored. it gives a quick idea. check for paintjobs to cover up spots or rust. if you don't trust it, let it go. something from the early 2000s might be something to start looking. for instance some relatives of mine are selling a 2002 zx-7 for around 1500 I think. that's a good deal since it's really taken care of and saves you a lot of money to maybe spend on a nice jacket or a cool exhaust in the future when you've gotten the hang of it.
