Myself. I only do things that give me pleasure. I held down a job for almost a year; working a manual dead-end job like that is the definition of failure and sadness. I wouldn't have been able to without abusing hard drugs.
I take the easy road I've been down thousands of times rather than start a difficult journey to something more gratifying. Give me an Oxy or an Adderall and maybe I'll do something that isn't easy, because I'll feel good doing it. Otherwise I'd rather stay in bed.

All these negative emotions won't motivate you, they only repel you from certain actions, they don't tell you what to do.

Positive emotions are the main source of motivation, you need to start thinking about the cheese at the end of the maze, not the hunger. Once you do that you will find yourself thinking about how to get through the maze and wanting to go through with it. This sounds sappy but technically it is true. Look up operant conditioning.

Not that pain isn't a good motivator, it is just for that to work properly you need a drill instructor, someone who gives a shit about your progress and knows what you should be doing so they can "repel" you away from not doing what you are supposed to be doing. However people like this are few and far between, there are a lot of angry people who like to shout and scream but they don't know what they are doing, they are more like toddlers throwing a hissy fit than a drill instructor.

It is up to you to motivate yourself and you do that through positive emotions.
