been flying since i was a babby since my parents are airline parents. i've been on a shit ton of planes

people occasionally clap. used to be more common it feels like, now a lot less. also probably a function of the airline, i.e. people on a cheapass ryanair flight aren't gonna clap

usually in my experience they only clap if you know something's up going into the landing
occasionally the pilot will get on the PA and basically say "hold onto your butts, this is going to be rough" because he's landing in 50mph hail or something, and then it's fine, people will clap for that
or if something notably goes wrong during flight and you're aware of it as passengers and you still land safely, people often clap
really it only normally happens when it's obvious to everybody that the cockpit was working their asses off to land the plane

it also happens spontaneously but that's incredibly rare. in these cases it's usually a group of dinguses who haven't flown since 1980 who probably clap when the mcdonalds guy hands them their mcmuffins
sometimes people join in to make them feel less weird about clapping
