I think the historical reason is that it's a reflection of traditional western moral sensibilities that are born out of religion. In terms of modern secular arguments to keep it illegal, most center on the very real concerns related to abuses relating to coercion, trafficking, etc. In my opinion those are serious concerns, but I don't know of anyone suggesting that human trafficking be legalized. Most of the arguments today are, in my opinion, fallacious and based on "slippery slope" logic.

Status seems like something that is conveyed to a large extent by income. Looks and mannerisms are to a pretty big extent outside of someone's control. To the extent that both those things can be controlled there are pressures other than sex that encourage people to keep themselves as respectable as they can. I don't think that society is going to totally fall apart if prostitution is legalized.
