My middle school had a rotating schedule, 7 classes a day. You could only sit in the row of 4 or so tables allotted for your class that day, and you couldn't sit at any other classes tables. So if you had no friends in a class you were screwed and had to sit alone at these round tables where it was extremely noticeable you were alone and an easy target.
