I've been on vacation there twice now, and you don't need to know any Japanese at all. Almost all the young people there speak English, if you need help or have a question you can just ask someone. They are polite and helpful.

I studied Japanese at college and did an exchange year at Hosei University in Tokyo in 2014. I wouldn't really quite say I'm fluent but I'm probably entry JLPT2 level.
