I always wanted to try if out. o even researched when they have lessons years ago and the closest clubs or classes were all 50+ miles away.

fencing is extremely sweaty and most of the people who do it are kinda snobby.

to be really good you need private instruction or natural talent

if you have neither then you will lose to people who do. no sport is fun to lose all the time

also the rules within fencing limit creativity alot

there are exceptionally qt girls who try fencing but women want to associate with someone enjoying themselves and doing well not with someone getting frustrated and doing poorly.

That said I enjoyed fencing and would do it if there was a cheap way to do it.

Fencing is cool, but if you don't exercise correctly it leave you with one strong arm and one strong leg. Another arm and another leg will remain underdeveloped which can cause problems with a spine.

I bring my foils, masks and gloves on picnics and play drunk fencing with my friends. I've had a few years of training and enough common sense to keep the injuries to a minimum, although I did break a sword and impale a guys leg once. He ended up thanking me for giving him an honest-to-god duelling scar.

Take home note: have fun and worry less about it. If you have a volleyball, play volleyball. If you have swords, go fence someone.

If you're talking about getting srs about fencing, /r9k/ may not be the right place.

When I went to Germany for abroad classes I was in awe at the ones in Berlin. I joined up there and had a blast until I had to come back.

I practiced Eskrima for few years and it was actually pretty cool. It's more real life martial art than pure fencing because you learn to use all kind of weapons and how to fight against them. Dual wielding was also nice. I still have lots of different sticks and machetes. I also learned to fight without weapons and eskrima's footwork technique works in fistfights too.

You can do wonders with just a stick if you know how to use it.

I fenced at university. Foil and sabre, and some epee lessons. I'll answer your questions.

First of all, they're not swords. They're either weapons or call them by their proper name, ie, foil, sabre, epee.

There seem to be a few types who are drawn to it. People in professional fields (law, medicine etc IDK why this is), drama geeks, larpers, a few historian types and fedora tippers, although the fedora tippers usually drop out early when they realise there is actual exercise involved.

Forget royalty or upper class connotations. The rich kids all played rugby or rowed (crew).

It reminded me of TKD. Superior range and good speed mattered, and desu if you're a manlet it just isn't much fun. Judo is a good sport for manlets and lanklets alike though. There's a moveset to cater to both which feels nice. No one is left out.
