when someone tells me something, sometimes I give an example of when I was in that situation to show I understand them and to enrich and broaden the conversation
but I just heard that's bad apparently?
I always do that, dont think people think its bad and if they do then fuck them in the ass because i dont care

It's not bad but you shouldn't overdo it. It's because you switch the topic to yourself after they've tried to introduce a topic related to themselves.
I always relate stories to television shows and movies. I know people are probably annoyed by it but it's the only thing I relate to any more.

The conversation is supposed to be about them, by doing that you're taking the focus away from them and they don't like that.

but why do conversations have to be like that?
cant they just be about everything or the situation they're describing?
It is bag because think you are trying to win telling a better story.
You should just try to ask some dumb question at the end of your story so you don't kill the conversation.
So yeah if you are talking about with someone you know had a car stolen, you tell your story, and then ask some mindless question like "so what you are planning to do now, going to take the subway?"
just don't overthink it

>I give an example of when I was in that situation to show I understand them
I used to do this, and I understand why you think it's the right thing to do.
The problem is, you think they are actually talking about the situation they are in, when the actual focus of the conversation is them.
They don't really care about the situation they re talking about, outside of the fact is is happening to THEM.
You may think you are still discussing the same thing, because you are focusing on the situation being described; but to them, you have just completely changed the subject.
Normies are narcissistic cunts.

i wouldn't say it's categorically bad, but it depends on the context. if you're friend calls you to say he's in the hospital with terminal cancer, you shouldn't say
>Oh yeah, i had to go to the hospital once to get stitches. It sucked.
On the other hand, if someone tells you about a concert they went to, it's fine to say "I saw them in Cincinnati! They were awesome!"
Basically just try to put yourself in their shoes and bee urself :^)
