That's awesome actually. A common atheist "argument" is that eternal life is a "reward" in the bible, and conversely hell is a "punishment". Scripturally it literally isn't, but sadly I've met many christians who act like it is.

What's really important is living life with grace and goodness in your heart as much as you can and living as Jesus lived. Being with God in spirit after death is the result of this way of living, not a reward for it. And honestly if you think of it as a reward, you're not really trying to live a good life because it's good, you're just doing a job, and I'm not quite sure that even qualifies you for salvation. I could be wrong but it would be horribly ironic were that the case.

The Orthodox Church seems really interesting but intimidating. As a white German-American guy can I walk into the Egyptian one? Or would the Russian one in my city be better?

The Episcopal church I've been lurking in has really nice aesthetics and music but the politics are just one step too far left for me.

This is just an abridged form of one of the major messages of the entire Old Testament. If you read anything there as pure history of course you'll reach some warped conclusion, because that isn't what it is. It's parable mixed with history.

God isn't "threatening" the Jews, he's demonstrating a basic point. If you reject God i.e think yourself better-knowing than Him, bad shit happens to you. It was put in mostly temporal terms as to be more easily understood, but in the context of Christ's teachings it's clear it can be more importantly applied to spiritual terms.

I see this commonly from many atheists, treating God like some human ruler with power over others who makes rules they must follow, but that isn't the case. God is the all-knowing creator of the universe, his "rules" are objectively the optimal way to live. Live suboptimally, suboptimal things will happen to you. I've only ever been to a couple Russian Orthodox services, and neither were full Sunday services, but they were one of the better church experiences of my life. And these were at a kind of shabby, small church in our town of 30,000, maybe 15-20 regular attendees.

Personally I like Orthodoxy more than most any other denomination, but I have some disagreements that make me not want to commit to it.
