Literally just go down to a local union hall and ask about an apprenticeship. It's that easy. 24 is not too old.
I work as a sprinkler fitter. Guys I know in their late 20s and early 30s are already developing back problems and shit. Probably not worth it unless you get into a cushier profession.

Engineering may not be the free ride to big bucks like they tell you, but what I like about it is that, depending on the field you go into, you can straddle the line between blue collar work and office work.
Right now my work has me spending most of my time in a lab building stuff, but I also get to design some of the stuff that I build. It's perfect to me. It's not backbreaking manual labor and it's not office drudgery.
