I've smelled period smell from my mom after she's been in there. Something she threw in the garbage I guess. I've never smelled that smell just being near her or any other female under normal circumstances though.

In conclusion I'd say guys can smell it if the female is naked and he's getting nearer to that area, or if he shares a bathroom with her, but not under normal circumstances.
