Pretty sure the option to have a tripcode would've been removed long ago if it were a net negative. Tripcodes have been around basically as long as imageboards. Not only that, but in my experience tripfags (not including myself here, obviously - just others whom I have seen) tend to have more positive posts, as well as contribute more beneficial content, overall than the average anonymous poster, since they don't want shitposts attached to their identity. People who autistically screech against tripfags, on the other hand, tend to do nothing but derail good threads. However, filtering out trips, like >>35987044 does, is an extremely reasonable thing to do and causes no problems for anyone.

I actually started using a trip (on a different website) because I saw how much the other tripfags contributed to and improved the community.

it's kind of funny, many people thought at the time that trip drama was somehow orchestrated by a few of us in some secret chat or something (like the /r9k/ illuminati) but for the most part we only communicated in one-off posts on the board.

i think trip culture on /r9k/ is fascinating and have often thought about writing some legitimate academic lit on the topic but can't figure out a good angle of attack
