With a firm handshake the alliance has been established.
Hollow and Zanpakuto have become partners, much to the shock of the sword god.
Mera lets go of your hand and sighs with relief.

"Well... guess that's it then."

You nod.
"I guess it is."

From behind you hear a high pitched voice speak up.
"W-What?
Is Mera going to leave us?"
The smallest of the four zanpakuto girls cries.

Mera pretty much ignores her and turns to the Toshin.
"Looks like you'll need someone else to tend your forge."

"Guess I do..."
Oetsu nods with some sadness behind his eyes.
He looks up and at the four girls still gawking at you all.
"Hey! You four!
Get yo ass to the Galaxy and round up all dem fire bitches!
Tell 'em I'm holding an audition!"

"Y-Yessir!"
A bit taken back they all hurry out of the workshop and run towards the much more luxurious place.

At the while this is happening you're busy fiddling around with your new armament.
Twirling the small knife both in the air, on your palm and between your fingers you conclude that its weight distribution is just how you like it.
With an almost child like smile you toss the trench knife in the air where it spins several times before you snatch it out.
Even though you haven't handled a combat knife in quite a while the old innervations are still kicking. This pleases you immensely.

With one final toss in the air you close your eyes and extend your open palm where the knife will inevitably fall.
In your mind you can see the spinning blade as it rises and quickly falls.
Once you feel something making contact with your skin you quickly close your palm and let out a smile once it becomes obvious that you indeed grabbed the handle and not the blade itself.
Quickly you swipe the weapon before you and it makes a satisfying "Woosh" sound as you cut the air.

"Excellent!"
You smile not only because of the exceptional quality and sharpness of the blade but also because you managed to NOT cut open your own palm with your foolhardy trial.

At this Oetsu looks up who still appears to be quite lost in thought about Mera leaving his service.
He walks up to you and speaks.
"Ya know... I really should report this to the monk just to fuck with ya.
Buuuut... if he found out I willingly reforged one of your swords he'd have my hide as well.
So guess I'll let ya off da hook for now.
However!"
He raises up a finger.
"I want something in turn for this!"

"You got to work on one of our swords.
We gave you our secrets willingly and besides... Mera asked for this."

"I know. I know. But hear me out!
It ain't no big deal, I promise!
Just... let me see, aight?"
He points at your new knife.

Are you tired of civ quests that die out quickly? Well fear no more, here's a tribe quest that wont die easy

Rules
> Each turn is a month
> Each turn you can do 2 things. ACTION, RESEARCH, and LAW. Diplomacy and trade cost no points, but warlike actions such as: organize traders to supply army effectively or move my army east cost one ACTION move.
>Moves can be used however you want. ie: you can do 2 actions or 2 researches in 1 turn.
>If your civ becomes advanced enough they can get more turns. Eg: build a library you get one extra turn specifically for research.
> Turns must be logical. You can't just develop guns right after you find sulfur. There's a process of development
> War can happen at any time by surprise attacks. I don't give any repercussions, but most likely other players will.
> You MUST be in discord to play

To clarify what the types of moves entail:
-ACTION (Literally doing things, building, traveling, gathering).
- RESEARCH (Developing new Ideas & techs, Upgrading/changing old ideas & techs)
- LAW (Making a change to your government, eg: in my oligarchy aristocracy, every 5 years a new council is elected by the masses. Or create a bureau of statistics which will record my population and taxes.)
>If a turn is well thought out or phrased well enough, you might get a bonus

I probably missed a lot more stuff but let's just get into the game
https://discord.gg/rJhaGqa

You are all migrant settlers and it's time to chose a place to settle. In this world it's a lot smaller compared to earth, therefore it's easier to move around.

Central Database back on line.

Reconstructing history...

You are Dreadnought Designation Oberon, a massive, powerful starship designed to defend humanity against all threats alongside your brothers and sisters. You were given a sentient AI so that you would fight as well and perhaps even better than a human commander.

You were supposed to be there in Humanities Darkest Hour.

But you were not.

Something went wrong, and instead you have slept for over 75 years. Within that time, humanity has become a shell of its former self.

Now though, you have awoken. After reconstructing your databases, you burst through the planet that had housed you. You answered a distress call from the Frigate Class ship Spartacus, who were escorting a group of civilian ships.

After dealing with three strange alien spacecraft, you decided to attend an audience with the new Captain of the Spartacus Emmy Colby. There you met with an AI calling herself Titania, who informed you of how long you've been asleep.

History Reconstruction complete.

Oh cool this is back.

"Oberon? Are you ok?" Ms. Colby's voice sounds so far away now. However, the inflections in her voice indicate concern.

You can understand why. On the outside, your gynoid unit appears to be in a state of shock.

Which...is sort of right.

Your advanced intelligence and mental capacities are far beyond that of any normal AI. As such, you can easily absorb data and rearrange it to fit the situation at hand.

However, even you can sometimes become overwhelmed.

When Titania informed you that you have been asleep for 75 years, your mental facilities went into overdrive. You needed to update your data to fit with the current time frame, backup old copies, and make space for new information.

But, one thought in your mind is what prevails above all others. One thought is what causes even your systems to freeze for just a moment.

It is...

>The thought of your brother and sister Dreadnoughts. Where are they now? Are they ok? Will they remember you?

>The thought of all the lives that have been lost. Why weren't you there? Why didn't someone wake you up? Could all of this have been avoided?

>The thought of humanities current state. What knowledge has been lost? What influential figures have been forgotten? Are we even more divided than before or more unified?

Another jojo’s bizarre adventure quest stat’s, rule, etc.
Dice roll RULES

ROLLING: another JoJo’s Bizarre quest uses a d100 rolling. The default table for significant actions the tiers of success requiring a roll is as follows:

1 CRITICAL MISS,
2-10: Definite Miss
11-89: Various Degrees of Success
90-99: Definite Success
100: OVERPOSE!

1s and 100s cannot be overturned unless the other is rolled to cancel it out. Otherwise, the highest tier of success achieved goes.

WHAT DO STATS DO?: The stats do two things. First, they extend the “Definite Success” range of a Stand’s actions, as follows:

E: No change (90-99)
D: 80-99
C: 75-99
B: 70-99
A: 65-99
BATTLE SYSTEM: There is no flat health value, nor is there any flat way to determine damage sustained due to an attack. Powers can tend to inflict conditions that the enemy has to deal with, and you don’t necessarily have to KO an enemy to take him or her out of the fight. A given power may inflict a condition that the player will have to contend against in some manner, similar to a FATE aspect. For example, if a Stand has the power to throw around gravity wells, and the user catches an enemy in the range of one of his wells, the target would, reasonably, be “weighed down” by the enhanced gravity due to the gravity well; it would be harder to move around and avoid any further attacks unless the well can be dispelled somehow. Treat the effects of a power similar to how you would treat any trait, except it is (usually) temporary in nature. Conditions are ranked from 1 (minor) to 5 (strong). Conditions also tend to stack upon each other, so it is best to try to get rid of conditions before they cripple your character. Even though a character may be heavily crippled by conditions, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are always out of the fight. It will be significantly harder to perform actions you want, but depending on the nature of the condition, you might still have an out if you can figure a way out of the condition yourself or can get backup from someone else. Just because you’re down doesn’t always mean you’re out.

Wardrobe.

Specific sets of clothes can grant specific advantages in situations. For instanceover the top designs are jojo oriented one’s have the ability to pose. Posing can grant any stat and move it up a rank for a few turns (longer depending on how well you roll). Clothes like suits and ties (normal ones)will give you a bonus in charm and additional dialog options. Standard, normal clothes can help you hide among civilian's if being hunted.

With that being said we're off to the races. (Don't worry I archived the thread after this one so no worries)

You tell Duca and Claw that you are heading to the bathroom with their response being that they will stay here so they can continue to watch Joseph and Cesar struggle with training. They are as they call it "Having desert and a show". However you are reminded about Speedwagon's words about Rebecca being worried sick for you. It would most likely be a good idea to make sure she is ok minus the whole smart ass stand comments. As you walk back into the dining room you ask.

"Anyone knows where Rebecca went off to."

Suzi is the first one to answer.

"She went into her room. Which was odd since after she talked to Lis-."

Lisa interrupts her.

"After talking to her about everyone's training..."

Suzi looks confused but never the less Lisa continues talking.

"You will find her in her room though."

"Um... Thank you?"

You walk out of the dining room and in the corner of your eye you see Lisa pulling Suzi aside and whispering something in her ear. Ok this is getting odd... Never the less you navigate your way through out the island until you find the stretch of rooms, each with a different name of someone. Speedwagon, Joseph joestar, Josh Borkowsk, etc until you find Rebecca's room. Which you can hear her humming a melody you don't recognize in the slightest. As you knock on her door she abruptly stops and drops something... You can hear the scurry of feet and the sounds of things being put away quickly as if to hide something, finally she opens the door... What the hell happened to her in there... Her light brown hair is frizzy as all hell and she's in a sunflower dress which has holes in it. She starts to talk in an out of breath and shaky tone.

"Oh hey josh!"

You are the Courier. Leader of your a fledgling new America reborn, as empires old and new wage war around you, and you continue to press your nation into higher heights of power to match them. BigMT continues to expand and churn ever more powerful technologies at your disposal, but comes with an insatiable hunger for resources and power which you are ever on the prowl for. To that end, you have made deals, and begun an invasion of the great Divide where a mountain of steel lays in wait like a prize for you. Unlocking this region may very well be the next step in the growth of your nation into a superpower.

Your request for a modified LAER based Securitron model is complete.

Coming in two forms, the standard Securitron model with built in human interface and civilian control features and face screen, and your hardier but less intelligent Soldier-Securitron.

Both arms are replaced with newly developed Gatling LAER's, based partly off of Elijah's Advanced LAER. Each shot by a Laer is nearly 3 times as powerful as the standard Laser Rifle Shot, and almost 6 times as powerful as the standard Gatling Laser individual shot. Twin armed, they are a formidable weapon, causing

Interestingly, Cain likes the weapon and notes its "similarity to electrical weapon he discovered in the Secret Vault before it blew the fuck up". Your scientists and files on BigMT confirm the LAER and Cain's weapon share similar parts, though the LAER seems more advanced.

The upshots of this design are that it has increased the energy weapons lethality of the Securitron Model considerably, showing a "200% increase in vaporization" according to Dr. 0. The weapon being an electrical variant make it particularly effective against robots and enemy power armor. The new multi-purpose wheel/legs have also increased

Drawbacks are that the weapon itself is more fragile and prone to breakdown and overheat, so the Securitrons Auto-Repair mechanisms work very hard increasing energy cost as well as being more vulnerable to counter fire. In addition, the increased energy consumption necessitates a larger alien battery which becomes a vulnerable point as well as being glowing and slightly more visible.

To counter this, the extra armored Hazard Variety increases the armor protection of all systems yet however, also increases its energy consumption, decreases speed, and also increases cost but gives it ample armor and cover.

Ugh I hate typos.

That was supposed to lead into the mention that they increase the rates of vaporization, are generally more powerful, and cause electrical damage.

>The new multi-purpose wheel/legs have also increased
*Increased the flexibility of the Securitron Model over hard terrain while retaining their landspeed over flat terrain.

EvoGame-Planet-Essari-13.png
1MB, 5333x2750px
Hello again fellow creators and questers. It's been a while since I've had the time to do this, but finally I have a period of time to pick up my EvoGame series. For today I'm going to be putting the story of the Moon Worlds Janus and Rienia to the backburner to revisit/finish the story of my previous world: Essari. Rules and goals of this EvoGame are still mostly the same, but with some new twists, such as an actual OP/player driven story.

As GM, I'll do my best to actively work on phylogeny charts to track the evolutions, and also make random events for the world to drive evolution down new paths. Since I've done this a few times now, and taken the time to observe/lurk on other EvoGames, I've picked up a few new tricks to keep everything organized and streamline too.

How to play:
• Open an image of a species in MS Paint, or your editor of choice
• Make one evolutionary change to that species
• Save as .PNG!
• Post your new species in the thread with a description of what evolution you've added and why.
• Details indicating what the generation of your species is important. Please indicate. (Base Organisms are Generation 0)
• Details regarding a creatures size or name aren't necessary, but are encouraged.
• Nothing too outlandish. Anything incredibly silly or outlandish will not be considered a canon species 95% of the time.

Notes:
• Unless stated explicitly, no species ever goes extinct. Old species can still evolve, even if they're not on the latest "chain"
• Try to make your evolutions gradual and realistic in biological standards.
• Everyday I'll add an update Phylogeny Chart to track changes. These take awhile, so please be patient.
• Every 72-96 hours there will be a New Event: The Emra Evolution. (More details on that in a later post.)
• This will be Thread 1 of 6 for the Return to Essari series, before we return to the Moon Worlds series.

New to the Game?:
• I know that I will be introducing a large number of creatures that may make hopping into this game a little daunting, but trust me when I say I've made sure to leave you with the tools to understand all the old organisms, and all new organisms will be welcomed with open arms.
• We also have a Discord to keep you up to date on EvoGame stuff, and chat with other folks. https://discord.gg/kk8eJgJ
• In this thread and in the imgur gallery will be a Blank Template that you can use to make any organisms you wish to make for this game.
• Just a note, while it doesn't matter how intertwined your organism is with the rest of ecosystem, the more dependent it is on the existence of other creatures, the more potential your organism has to survive.

The map above is our world, Essari in the new Emrialatic Era. More details on the new world setting, organisms, and Emra in the next posts.

So real quick, before I do the next post of information. This is the actual Discord invite: https://discord.gg/kk8eJgJ

--Recent World Changes--
A satellite of the Librarian's pings back to life as after a catalysmic extinction event in the form of burning lava fields fueled by generations of decomposing trees, chokes the atmosphere of Essari in black soot for almost a million years. Overtime though the atmosphere brightened and aftermath of the extinction on Essari became apparent. All but a few dozen organisms managed to survive the million year long cataclysm. The cost to the environments of Essari is heavy though, as much of the common clades of life such as the Braffbergs, Crystalline organisms, Disclodites, Rainetails, and even the ancient base organisms of the world have now permanently disappeared. What's more we are now introduced to a colder, drier Essari featuring permanent ice caps at both poles for the first time in its history. These surviving organisms endured a million years of literal hell, and they will endure and thrive in this new world.

Yet still, something lurks in the skies of Essari. Something eldritch, and every bit at durable as the individual organisms of Essari. And it would call itself Emra.

Attached here is Dossier for all the Marine Organisms of Janus. Should tell you everything you need to know about each organism.

--Organism Evolution Rules--
> Marine Organisms are allowed to freely migrate between each of the identified habitats.
> Organisms that can be found in all habitats are not discouraged, but are not too realistic in current biological standards. Feel free to make you case and prove me wrong though.
> Terrestrial/Aquatic Organisms that are regionally exclusive can only migrate between landmasses found within the said region.
> Plant Organisms may now be as large as the size 25 increment as stated below.
> Animal Organisms may now be as large as the size 25 increment as stated below.
> Silicates, Calcium, and rich quantities of Iron, Copper, Silver, Zinc, Crystal deposits, heavy metals, and many other resources are present in the environment and may be incorporated into an organisms diet/evolutions if desired.

I cannot stress this enough that this is a one-man job I've been doing here for the most part. If you think and/or want to provide me with resources to help improve the quality of information we have for the worlds (Food Webs, Trophic Levels, Mapping of individual Landmasses, Etc.) this would be welcomed and greatly appreciated.

And I cannot say enough how happy I am that folks are still interested in these EvoGames so far in. So thank you for your patience and participation, and enjoy the game.

With the dying off of many species of plants and animals, among them the Sweetsprints, the surviving Biped Grabrafs find themselves under an enormous evolutionary pressure. Only two plant species growing their main source of nutrition, braffifruit, remain and their source of guidance to this food, the sweetsprints, are now long gone.

As a result the Biped Grabraf diverge in several different evolutionary directions (Other evo's to be posted below soon).

With less nutrients available and the Sweetsprints gone, most Biped Grabrafs' have had their energy-stealing brains shrink. As a result they instead walk on all fours, like primates found on earth. They evolve teeth-like serrations on their beaks, allowing them to bite off, and feed on plant-life in times of desperations.

Large herds of these Grabrafs, the Hurku'ans, roam Sujardin, across the plains, between its forests. In a way they've taken up the niche left by the Sweetsprints.

Five years ago, the warrior race known as the Saiyans were annexed into Emperor Freeza's armies. Since that day, the Saiyans have acted as the emperor's loyal servents, sent first onto dozens of worlds, exterminating all who oppose Lord Freeza's rule. As mighty conquerors, destroying all who have stood against them, the Saiyans quickly made a name for themselves as some of Freeza's most powerful and loyal subjects.

Welcome to Saiyan Conqueror Quest, currently Age 736 of the "canon" timeline. You the players, having survived past your "canon" death, are changing history. From here forward your actions may even change the fate of the universe itself.

You are Karn, a Saiyan Brawler with a powerlevel of 27471 and are a leader of your own attack squadron. Your current teammates are:
Prince Vegeta, Meloka, Tunnip, and General Nappa.

Last time on Saiyan Conqueror Quest:
After recooperating from the last battle, you learn of King Vegeta's dislike for you, and help assure the young Prince Vegeta that he'll be ready to lead his own team once you arrive on Planet Vegeta. Your ship is then boarded by the Hive, you and Vegeta crushing the initial assault after both suffering serious injuries. After waking from the healing pod, you bust out and rally your team. Blasting your way out, your ship makes it to the infamous Pirate's Den. After purging the Hive from your ship, you land and disembark to be faced with three strange beings.

The most noticeable thing in the square are 3 stalls, each of them with a different sign. One sign says "Adventurous Archaeologists needed", another states "Treasure-hunters needed" and the last says "Official Adventurer's guild hiring."

Adventurous Archaeologists.

Time to drop the books, leave the magic university, and do some field work.

We have a long white beard, and we carry a six-foot staff.
(The staff isn't necessary for magic, a small bag of charms would work just as well and fit in a pocket, but appearances are important. Same reason we grew the beard.)

Skyranger Enroute to Mission Site, Asia

“So why are we going to this op instead of the guys in XCOM Asia? Isn’t China their turf?”

It’s a good question, and you can’t exactly fault Rachel for asking. With how long you’ve been cooped in this Skyranger as it darts it’s way across the Pacific ocean it’s led to a slight anxious air. It’s by far the fastest trip possible aboard a Skyranger sure, clocking in at a small chunk of travel time instead of dozens of hours, it’s still somewhat odd you are all going with another base much closer for response.

Frankly, you’re just happy to be back in the fight, having recovered very quickly in the last week or so since you were injured. There’s only a somewhat noticeable scar on your chest with the remnants of the plasma burn remaining but otherwise you are combat ready. XCOM’s medical tech is truly impressive. Burnout is still in recovery though, but he’ll be fine soon.

“Clearly the Commander prefers us instead because of our expertise or perhaps XCOM Asia is busy elsewhere?” Loki points out, giving that smile of hers to Rachel.

This causes Rachel to grumble a bit as she goes back to fiddling with her newly acquired Alloy Shield. Rachel’s dislike of Loki is still there, though it appears Loki is taking it in stride in either indifference or perhaps to try and move on. You can’t tell given it is Loki. While the two of them are both Engineers, their loadout is noticeably different. Besides the usual collection of explosive and support grenades on their person, Loki has opted to bring her Grenade Launcher and Rachel has remained stalwart in her choice of her shield.

“Well, as long as there isn’t any cars around we’ll be fine, right?” Sweet elbows you a bit with a smirk. While he’s only joking it’s still somewhat embarrassing, you really hope that little tidbit can be forgotten already. Probably not anytime soon, you quietly think.

Peppermint grunts in annoyance, seemingly echoing the sentiment. Once again she’s remained quiet besides some errant mumblings of something in Russian under her breath in the armory. You still haven’t gotten a chance to talk to her yet. You consider saying something but she’s already closed her eyes and is back into promptly ignoring everyone.

“As I said before, it’s a high priority mission. So we’re up.” Rook says, shaking his head. You glance over to him, while you and Rook have both cooled off from last time, you are still quite aware of the remarks he had made. For the sake of keeping professional you had not brought it up.

“I’m all for that as much as the next guy, but you couldn’t have asked for a just a little bit more information, sir? It’s just odd.” Rachel answers, trying to not sound too flabbergasted at Rook’s simple reply.

“Well, I suppose I can tell you if it’s bothering you that much, Rachel!” The happy voice of the Commander suddenly says over the comms. This causes Rachel to freeze and blush in embarrassment. Loki places a hand over her mouth, masking her own reaction. Sweet chuckles at the reaction.

“A-apologies, Commander! I didn’t mean too--” Rachel stammers a reply but the Commander merely giggles. There’s a warm inflection to it and it’s enough to help make Rachel calm down.

“As Rook had said, it is indeed a high priority mission and XCOM Asia is... specialized to handle other operations. You’re enroute to China for a target extraction.” The Commander says.

That causes a murmur in the Skyranger that neither you or Rachel understand until Peppermint speaks up, her first words real words in the mission. “This is a… Council Mission then?”

“Correct!” The Commander answers, pleased before sensing both your own confusion and Rachel’s. “Ah, sorry this would be your first Council mission then, no? The Council funds our little operation and occasionally... ‘requests’ specific missions like this one.”

You pause, noting the Commander’s pleasant and reassuring mood going stilted at the very end. A touchy subject? You are about to ask but Rook catches this and holds a hand up, insisting to not bring it up. Curious, perhaps you could ask the Commander or someone some other time then.

“Don’t worry, everyone! I’m sure you all will succeed. Anyways, Central will take over the briefing from here, but I’ll be watching and cheering you all on!” The Commander finalizes her motivating pep talk and that seems to put the squad at ease. During the pause, Rachel gives Rook an apologetic look which he replies with a sigh. After a moment, the voice of Central Officer Bradford steps into the conversation, which causes Rook’s disposition to drop. Your squad leader keeps himself cool as Bradford starts the briefing properly for you all.

“UN general Peter Van Doorn and his entourage were caught in the middle of an alien attack in China enroute to Shanghai for a military briefing on the recently revealed alien invasion. They were ambushed crossing the Xiangshangang Bridge earlier this evening and have been trapped since. Council Agents are already on scene to help with local authorities in securing the area but have been tasked to not conduct rescue operations. That’s where you all come in. General Van Doorn has been made aware extraction is coming before communication with his convoy was lost. We need you all to confirm Mr. Van Doorn is still alive, and bring him back safe before the place is completely overrun.” Bradford briefs.

“THE General?” You can’t help but add in. Everyone’s heard of the man's exploits. Some calling him The General while others nicknamed him as ‘Doom’, Van Doorn’s leadership has been decisive in recent conflicts across the globe. A part of you before thought that he’d already be in XCOM.

“The very same.” Bradford answers grimly.

“This is Big Sky, we’ll be arriving in the AO shortly.” Your Skyranger pilot for the operation speaks up from the cockpit. The rest of Strike One begins last minute preparations as you do yourself. As much as you had hoped that the laser weapons being cooked up in Engineering by Shen would be ready for deployment, it is sadly not the case. You double check if your kit and loadout is ready to go for the last time you are…

You agree to do some work for the weapon shop keeper since you really need the extra cash.
After you finish your peasant work he pays you 10 talons and gives you a package.

"Thanks for the help, deliver this package to my brother Joshua in the armour store in Leefside, 52 Cabbage street. When you return I'll pay you the 50 talons we agreed on."

You are James Baker, a wild card according to the strange man known as Igor. Over the past few days you have moved to the town of Birchland with your Great Uncle Carson and started school. You've started to learn more about the town and made a small number of friends. School quickly got weird as you learned of a rift leading to another world that you believe is tied to your own.

More worrying was during an assembly was the green smoke flowing from The Rift and the strange, impervious wooden door within. Students and teachers at your school have begun acting stereotypical and forming cliques. The cause of people acting like caricatures was Shadows ripping something out of copies in The Rift.

With both stone daggers taken care of you opened the mysterious stone door. Now in front of you lays a stone stairway leading somewhere, but you can tell it will be big.

With the stone stairs leading to who knows where and already nearly dying once today, stopping for now sounds nice. "Good idea, let's take on whatever is up there fresh."

"One moment please," Trish says as she pulls out the game camera.

You relax with the others for a minute while she sets up the camera. It doesn't take long though, and soon you are on the long walk back to camp. As you walk by the dam wall you see Martin take a few pictures of it out of the corner of your eye. The way back is clear of Shadows, which you are thankful for. Trish rushes to the door back once you get to camp, "We can text for communication, but I have to go now. Sorry."

"Guess she is in a rush," Martin says with a shrug before stepping through as well. By the time you get back on stage Trish or Ms. Brown or whatever you are suppose to call her in the school is gone. When you look at your phone you understand why, it's almost 8 P.M. "Oh shit, I gotta run! See you two tomorrow!" Martin says, running out.

"Do you have anything you have to run off to?" Zoey asks as the two of you walk from backstage.

"I don't have anything I need to rush to," You say truthfully.

"Well how would you feel about grabbing a bite to eat? I know a quiet place we can get something," she suggest as you get outside.

You look over at your bike, but she seems ready for that, "You can just throw that in the back seat, my car can handle it."

[Starting this up late, hope to begin earlier than tonight. But this is starting now. I hope to entertain you all on this quest, first time on /qst.]

Clouds and buildings sink from your vision as you gaze through the window of your vessel as it blasts off into the sky, the ruins of many times devastated city lie far below now. The only building, the sole building left in the purview is the solitary black spire jutting out with the somberness of a sentinel. The inside of the vessel rocketing off into the sky is the T-DEV, Trans-dimensional Entry Vehicle. Ones like this have deployed before, however this one is still just part of basic training.

As the building sink lower and even the black spire, the headquarters of your organization, Thanatos sink out of sight from your locked in harness, the devastation of battles stretches for miles beyond and into Lake Michigan. The entirety of wasteland is the quarantine zone. What used to be the sprawl, the metropolis of Chicago is marked by terrific warfare and deep scars made by monsters more powerful than anything has right to be.

“You scared?” You hear from Alexis beside you, a senior officer supervising your unit. She looks keenly into your eyes with her own clear blues searching for answers beyond mere words. Her platinum blonde hair is pulled into a tight bun. In normal military this'd be to allow her a helmet, but in this case it's just her style. A stray hair or two moves with every tumble of the T-DEV on stray bits of turbulence, its humdrum is loud and its jets are roaring like a monster.

“A little...” You mumble back, your face a little wrenched as you try your best to look through the window, to see the space up, the space beyond the threshold of that little portal.

She gives you a reassuring grin, though she obviously didn't hear. “It'll be fine.” She shouts over the engine. “We haven't had any incidents lately in the area we're going to.”

“Come on, if you're already rattling like a chickenshit, your Dmon will laugh at you.” A more confident rookie chides from the other side of you, Bruce. Heavyset but more in the strong way. He's got darker skin and biceps the size of a toddler. He's jacked, but you're not really sure that matters. “What kind did you get anyway?”

What kind, eh? Well, you sort of forgot... You bring up your left arm to check a large device attached to your forearm over combat armor. With a couple taps the lights on the device spring to life with what appears to be a video feed of a creature sleeping. You see...

Your name is Airi Hirayama. In your world, the barrier separating spirits from humanity broke half a century ago, allowing magic to spill back into human society. From the ashes of this drastic upheaval rose a new breed of human—the magus. A magus possesses superhuman capabilities, an affinity for the spirits and the ability to perform the gift of magic. You are one such magus and so is your twin brother Keiichi Hirayama. You both attend the prestigious, magus-exclusive True Hearts Academy in Shibuya, Japan.

Unlike most of your kind, you both possess a bizarre tendecy to cause chaos wherever you go. Last year, through bullets, explosions and freak accidents, you both managed to help interrupt Japan's premier magus academy battle tournament—The Festival of Magic—thrice in a row.

The Ministry of Education was very much unamused by your antics. As punishment, they have forced you and Keiichi to perform mandatory community service. You've been assigned ten special tasks related to the organization of the Festival exist and they must all be completed before the tournament commencement date. The alternative is the death of your future careers. The whole situation is very confusing and there are many complaints to be had, but ultimately you and your brother have little choice. The eyes of Shibuya and the Spirit World are upon you both, so buckle down and don't screw this up!

It’s a hot summer day. Clear blue skies, all the clouds gone. The sun beats down mercilessly upon your body. Moisture crawls down your forehead, threatening to fall on your cheeks. In the distance, a cicada buzzes in the shade of a tree.

You stand in your backyard, holding a curved, wooden sword—a bokken—in your hands. It’s heavy. The grip is coarse. You feel as if an eleven year old girl like you shouldn’t be holding one. They shouldn’t be swinging it through the air, stepping and retreating in a reenactment of the most basic kenjutsu kata.

But you are no ordinary eleven year old girl. You are Airi Hirayama, a fledgling spirit tamer. Your new partner has told you of how the path of the magi is immersed in violence. To this end, you must practice. You must grow strong and be able to protect yourself.

Yet, it hurts.

With every swing, every step, every action, your muscles burn. Your lungs plead for mercy and your vision blurs. The heat is roasting you inside, sucking the moisture through your barren skin. Not for the first time in your life, you curse the way you were born. You curse your frail body, your feeble muscles. You curse the very existence of anemia and all its diseased ilk.

You wonder what you are doing here. You try to answer why a girl with strength so far behind her peers is practicing with a weapon. You start to question if it’s really all worth this agony.

You swing again and knees threaten to buckle. Your chest is shrieking. The wood is digging red brands into your palms. Slowly but surely, exhaustion is creeping up on you.

You want nothing more to lie down in the shade, close your eyes and rest until the sun goes down. Drop the weapon, forget about the routine, return to the comfort of your room.

And indeed, you almost do. Your fingers loosen. The bokken nearly slides out of your grip and lands on the sun-bleached grass. However, at the last second, you tighten your grip and refuse to let it go. You stare towards the horizon, panting ragged breaths.

Deep down, you know that you cannot quit. Painful as it may be, the alternative is so much worse. Your brother will one day learn about the element of nothingness and it will remind you of the state you were back then.

(You are tired of so many things. Your room is a prison and its windows are the wardens that taunt you. The bills in the mail gnaw at you in the dark. Your brother came home with bruises on his skin and you couldn’t help but burst into tears. When you heard one of the details of Shesmur’s partnership—his ability to call on the faith of his kin and strengthen your blood over time—it felt like nothing short of a miracle.)

You stand there, resting for a moment. Then you grip the bokken tighter, temper your breathing and drop into the stance. Lift the bokken above your head. Swing once. Step forward. Retreat backwards. Put the sword in the guard position. You go through the motions and Shesmur chirps his approval, a solid “Well done.” Your muscles burn, but your heart swells with satisfaction.

Even if it hurts, this is good. You’re not burdening anyone. You’re actively seeking to improve yourself. One day, you’ll recover from the shackles your birth chained you in and you’ll grow into a stronger person.

And maybe, just maybe, you’ll be able to stand beside your dear brother.

>>Resume being Airi Hirayma.

When you were eleven years old, you ate some very bad food at a local festival. Magi are said to be superhuman, but you were still suffering from anemia and your body was unable to cope with the sudden influx of poison in your stomach. You felt as if the devil itself was nestling in your belly.

Keiichi had been furious. Your mother and Shesmur, even more so. You didn’t say much before the healer spirits got to you, because you were busy upending the contents of your stomach into the kitchen sink. Staring at the muck down there, you thought it wasn’t possible for any living being, spirit or human, to contain that much liquid inside of themselves.

You’re now been proven wrong.

There’s a spirit girl in front of you and she’s vomiting. Actually, that’s not the right word. Vomiting would imply there are pauses in between the retching. No, this is a continuous flow. It is several rivers merged together and stretched out on the steepest mountain known to man. It is a tsunami of pungent blackness that has covered the entire floor of the warehouse before you could blink.

Your nose instantly retches at the smell. You are submerged halfway up your knee. Keiichi looks disturbed. Michiko is horrified, no doubt thinking about her sense of dress. Last but not least, the thugs you were hounding look as if they really would like to wake up.

Your grip tightens on Shesmur’s hilt. You shift into a stance, blade in front, one foot behind the other, muscles ready to spring forward. If the spirit girl will attack, you will be ready for her. Except this doesn’t happen for another a few seconds. The spirit girl flips through the notebook, nods in approval and her body collapses into a pile of ink. It merges with the sea of blackness covering the ground and vanishes from sight.

“What?” You hear yourself say.

And she’s back again, scrambling out behind the thugs, her body reforming itself like slime. Before they can react, she grabs the heads of the tattooed and muscled ones and squeezes with all her might. A sickly, purple light bursts from her hands and pours into the heads of their victims. It illuminates their screaming mouths and bursting eyes, hollow and inflamed like vengeful ghosts. The spirit girl then drops them to the ink face-first.
