"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

>The first few posts will entail the minimal progress we made in the aborted thread last week.

In the meantime, to keep you guys entertained, give an indication on how lewd the writing should become during any potential intimate moments of Lieutenant Prince. I will up front refuse to write anything overtly detailed and explicit (mostly because it would probably be terrible and gross instead of entertaining), but it's up to you guys whether there is anything at all.

You are Lieutenant 'Prince'. A seasoned NCO of the Black Company that, through a cruel twist of fate, found yourself landed with an officer's commission. Now you find yourself in command of the 7th Kiregstrom Shocktroopers, a position with more responsibility and scrutiny than you ever wanted.

7th Kriegstrom Platoon
Comprised of the most well-armed and armoured troops, 7th Platoon offers the meanest, fiercest and, given the mortality rate, dumbest soldiers to be found in the Black Company. A more bizarre collection of fighting men and women has likely never been seen. Down-on-their-luck heroes with a magic swords and brooding pasts like Cairsun; escaped slaves with a penchant for magik like Nissar; disgruntled veterans of the Nuemunster Legions like Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus; Scarred Wildborn ‘Smiles’ (because fighting is really all a Wildborn knows); aging Skald huscarls like Hirstun of Ligh that should have retired long ago. You even have a mute rotten undead warrior, ‘Mask’, which is one even you haven’t heard before. Nevermind the fekking Dragon.

They’re your men (and women). Mercenaries, that kill for money. Warriors, with the right degree of pride and stubbornness. Soldiers, that fight for the man next to them. You never wanted this position, deciding who dies where. Dark Father knows it’s only a matter of time before you get them all killed.

Recap
Following the fall of the Neumunster city of Sarsburg several weeks ago, your Employer has sent his unholy host spread throughout the entirety of the western and northern reaches of the Neumunster Nation. While the main part of the Company and the undead went west to Oxenfurt Bridge, you were tasked with the seizure of the northern town of Kresden.

Having taken Kresden mostly intact, at the cost of a few comrades to the ravenous Grenn, the rest of the province should follow in short order. For now though, you're busy stopping your own men doing more damage to the town in occupying it than they ever did in taking it.

”I liked what I saw last night, sir.” CPL 'White Bitch' Tara leans in with a hungry grin and whispers conspiratorially “You ever done it in a church?”

"Yes, yes I have." Well, technically not a church per-se but it probably counts. You ponder the CPL's offer for a moment; issues like rank, favouritism and sexual frustration are considered in turn. Father, it's been a while. Ah fek it, why turn down a willing and attractive woman? It will be on your terms though. "But we're not putting on a fekking show for the troops, Corporal. I'm staying at the manor. Report to my room tonight for your... debriefing."

You feel a smug sense of satisfaction at CPL ‘White Bitch’ Tara’s taken aback expression, to her credit she quickly recovers.

“Done. Was wondering when you’d grow some balls, ‘your lordship’.” She grunts, nodding at your shoulder. A thin trail of red is pouring from underneath your battered shoulder plate [HP: 19/25]. ”What happened there? Didn’t see that Dog-fek put so much of a touch on you.”

“Ach.” You shrug, then wince. ”That Cataphract got in a good one. I kind of let it lie for a bit."

”Idiot.” ‘White Bitch’ deadpans without affection. ”Get it seen to.”

It’s not so bad, a few days rest will see you right as rain. If you stick around now then you’re bound to be late for them town council meeting with the other LT’s.

“Christians, hasten to help your brothers in the East, for they are being attacked. Arm for the rescue of Jerusalem under your captain Christ. Wear his cross as your badge. If you are killed your sins will be pardoned.”
- Pope Urban II

It is 1095, and the Pope has declared the First Crusade! The Byzantine Emperor called upon Western Christendom for help, and has now been answered. Soon, the noble heroes of the Catholic realms will head towards Anatolia and the Holy Lands to save their eastern brethren.

The Players will take the roles of the leaders of this glorious endeavour. This will be a quest with nation building tendencies. There will be multiple player characters acting at once, hopefully at least somewhat cooperatively.

The game is planned to consist of four Acts:

>Act I: Preparation
Wherein our heroes ready themselves for the ordeals to come with varying degree of success.
>Act II: Pilgrimage
Wherein our heroes attempt to reach the Holy Lands without being shipwrecked, excommunicated, or accidentally starting a war with our Byzantine allies.
>Act III: Crusade
Wherein our heroes battle the heathen hordes of the Seljuks and Fatimids and try to take back the rightful lands of Christendom whilst also surviving.
>Act IV: Spoils
Wherein our heroes negotiate, bargain, plot and bicker like churlish children.

>Random Info

Although starting during Act I will be beneficial, players may join at any point.

Dice rolls are always d100s. 1 and 100 are the only crits.

I will reward role play. Getting into character and saying how you're doing something will always be given slight advantages over simply stating an action. Tactics in battle will be particularly susceptible to this.

Updates by me will likely be approx once a day.

There can only be one King of Jerusalem. You are all competing with each other.

There can only be a King of Jerusalem if the crusade is successful. Don't compete too much.

Act I will begin when we have a few players about to start it with.

Characters are required to be at least somewhat realistic. I reserve the right to veto. If you wish to sign up to the crusade, the pope requires the following information from you.

>Name:
>Country of Origin:
Any Catholic nation that existed in Europe at the time is viable. Very distant countries (eg norway or scotland) may have a harder or more expensive time reaching the holy lands.
>Position:
Who is your character? Likely a noble of some sort. A duke or count? Or perhaps a powerful bishop or wealthy merchant?
>Background:
Just give me a paragraph/few lines (though more if you want). Any fluff you'd like to make up. May have effects upon your start and during the game.
>Colours:
2 colours please, a primary and secondary. Will be used for campaign and battle map purposes.

I will then give you a profile including the following information:

>Army: The soldiers under your command.
Levies: peasants with basic weaponry.
Infantry: properly armed and armoured soldiers
Archers: ranged equivalent of levies
Crossbows: ranged equivalent of infantry
Cavalry: mounted soldiers that can also be fielded as infantry on foot
Knights: superior soldiers made up of highly trained and equipped gentry and nobility, can fight on foot or horseback. Can't be trained out of lower troops (can't train a man's bloodline).
Siege Equipment: catapults, battering rams and siege towers that make capturing castles and cities considerably easier, but are a huge liability if attempting to travel.

Welcome to The City, a psychedelic urban dreamscape at the outskirts of consciousness. Passing through it are dreamers, dreams, mediators, psychonauts, aliens, gods, monsters, personifications of abstract concepts, and anything else that feels like it. Enter the Acid Girls.

An Acid Girl is the echo of a powerful feminine psyche that passed through The City, tearing at the fabric of reality in the process. They are personifications of raw hallucinogenic power cobbled together with leftover strands of feminine ego, and they are very powerful.

In Acid Girl #1 we followed Apriil, a newly formed Acid Girl with the power of Music, as she went on a psychedelic path to discovering her own Inner Song.

In Acid Girl #2 we followed Skribl, a streetwise Acid Girl with the power of Graffiti, as she parkoured around a surreal dream city in search of Apriil. We also got knee-deep in plot, and got to see some of Skribl's allies and rivals.

Unlike Apriil in Acid Girl #1, Skribl in Acid Girl #2 has existed in The City for some time. While Skribl has a clear grasp of The City politics, the reader does not. Skribl also has a floating backstory that readers fill in as we go.

In Acid Girl #2.1: Operation Radical Sunshine we pick up right where we left off.

>Something I forgot to mention, art is cannon, unless I can't find a relevant picture, in which case you get an eye or character portrait, like this time, when you get a character portrait, to remind you what your MC looks like.

Sprink the Nymph pulls Skribl the Acid Girl up out of the Dissociation Pool and back into the Ego Forest. Sprink does not look back, but simply walks up to an overlarge sunflower and sits in the middle. Skribl shakes her head a little and follows the nymph on the flower, and when she is seated Sprink tickles the sunflower, which chuckles and rises up out of the ground about twenty feet. Sprink hops off and grabs onto a huge yellow angel's trumpet flower, and climbed up a vine and out of sight.

Skribl gets a running start and grabs ahold of the angel's trumpet and climbs up after the nymph. At the top of the vine she sees Sprink walking down a bamboo bridge, and hurries to catch up. Sprink starts talking with her as they walk.

"The elves built this bridge. There wasn't always so many elves, you know. Or maybe you don't; I forget sometimes that you are so young. There have always been elves I think, but there have been so many recently. There are not like us, you know. The City did not birth them. They are aliens," the nymph says.

"They're just, you know, they're people sleeping, they're dreaming," Skribl says uncomfortably. "They aren't 'aliens'. Klowdy says it's the elves that keep The City alive, that if they hadn't dreamed of it, it would never have existed."

"Then perhaps they are gods," says Sprink. Skribl does not respond.

At a certain point Sprink appears to faint and fall over the side of the bridge. Skribl rolls her eyes and jumps down after her, landing softly in a bed of poppies. She gets up quickly and follows the nymphs laughter into the forest, trying to not inhale. She spots her sliding down a hill of mossy vines and barely catches up, sliding down after her. At the bottom of the hill the nymph is crouched down, staring intently ahead of her. She is not moving.

Skribl tenses, and does not move. Her eyes flicker around the forest, but she does not see it. After a long time though, it looses interest, and she hears the light rustling of grass and leaves. If the forest was not so deathly still, she might have missed it. Eventually, Sprink nods at her and the two set off again, with less laughter.

After crossing a very colorful creek they come to an armchair the size of a house in the middle of the north trail. A trio of elves are giggling and smoking weed on top of it. Sprink points out the glowing toadstools on the trail, and where they seem to end, in front of the chair.

The thaw cam earlier this year than you'd remembered it. Less than a week had passed since the battle between the Bralin and the Krasick when the telltale spittle of spring rains had started. The deluge that followed was everything you remembered spring to be, damp, cold, but welcome promise of change from the world of white you'd been in for months now.

The river, acting as a drain for the entire valley, rose several feet in a single night, the waters turning muddy as it carried months of rain and snow towards the sea. You were concerned that the river might take your bridge with it, but it's held so far. James' crew have nonetheless been watching it with great interest, and have set up a vast webbing of rope in the hopes of snaring any errant boulders or trees before they serve as battering rams. Nevertheless they've sent survey teams upriver in the hopes of finding problems before they build momentum.

The ranch, and the help, have had all eyes on the cattle, given the calving season is near upon you. Normally, the onset of the spring floods leaves you with at least part of the herd stranded on either side of the river the bridge gives you a new option, cordoning off pregnant cattle on one side of the river. Under the tutelage of Tai, Zhou's beastfolk prove themselves capable herders, and manage to drive the skittish animals over the bridge. As far as you're told, the beastfolk still in Phoenix lands are largely shepherds when they aren't being conscripted as mercenary cannon fodder. The three youth's of Zhou's band have taken up their own watch, guarding the henhouse other small livestock with zeal.

Marie, grounded due to the rains, has sought other diversions and has attacked her language program with gusto. Tatiana has gotten to the point where she can hold simple conversations in your language. Artyom, not so much. Nevertheless, she's expanded her language crusade to taking over Tai's work with the beastmen with not insignificant help from Liama and her shadows, a reassuring olive branch that was offered, and very obviously a way for Liama and the shadows to kill their boredom of guarding someone who's at relative peace, for the moment.

It's early morning, and you've grabbed a steaming bowl of porridge from Tai's kitchen before retreating into your fathers office. You sit in silence, listening to the crackle of the fire as you plan your day.

How is our captive doing? Have we done anything about getting the Nitor to foot the bill for getting us some more reliable rifles for our men?

Finishing your food, you set the bowl aside and look down at the letter you got from the Nitor branch command. While thankful for your help dealing with the Kingfisher's men, they apparently lack the authority to arm a fighting force that's not under their remit, even a baker's dozen of bestfolk expatriates. Captain Keel had warned you that it would probably turn out this way, but you'd still hoped you wouldn't have to foot the bill yourself. Even so, the Nitor'd graciously offered to send a few more patrols in and around the trade route. Keel himself had a few words with you when you first got back, and after a thorough retelling of what you had learned had agreed to second a squad or two of his men once you had acquired some 'actionable intelligence' from your captive. "After all, it is in the United Free Kingdom's best interest to avoid any unecessary hostilities." He'd said.

No matter, until your 'prisoner' is healed enough to talk there's not much to learn on what is happening beyond the mountain. A more model captive you couldn't have asked for, even with two beastfolk guarding him, the centaur hadn't made a single move to remove the blindfold. The cheek had healed nicely, and he'd probably be able to talk if it weren't for Tatiana being insistant on properly setting the loosened teeth she had managed to save. Just as well, your first interrogation attempt had resulted in him launching an oversized molar toward you when he had tried to mumble out his name. You'd backed off as Tatiana fussed around resetting the errant tooth.

Looking at the nitor letter once more, you hazard the idea of asking the Nitor about the lagoon you've still got a gateway to in your backyard, and if it'll be be up for auction anytime soon, but you figure to let it rest. At least until you talk to Keel, no sense badgering the Nitor high command until anymore for the time being. No sense in annoying them overmuch.

Heading downstairs, you relieve Tai of dishwashing duty and watch him sprint to go help with rest of the hands watch the cattle. From here you can just barely see at edge of the compound, examining the cattle the three beastfolk who had pulled herd duty were moving his way. Beyond that, invisible in the light drizzling rain is the construction crew, likely working to protect the bridge and road they had spent so much time building.

From the bunkhouse you see Tatiana step out and exchange a few words with Artyom, who's been waiting near the entrance for the merest hint of any wrongdoing on the part of your prisoner. His deference to her now seems justified, and while you can't see it, the royal features must be awfully pronounced if a Hussar that far north from the capital was easily able to identify a 'princess'.

Welcome back to Thug Quest.

The year is 1986. Crime in the United States is at an all-time high. Criminals, drugs, and guns flow into the country from everywhere in the world, and the gateway to it all is Heat City. In this coastal paradise of hot beaches, cool babes, and cold hearts, to get what you want, you have to do whatever it takes, and more.

When we last left our hero, Johnny, you were engaged in a daring heist, sneaking into the headquarters one of America's most powerful crime syndicates: the Triads' skyscraper fortress known as Dragon's Nest.

Your plan is to infiltrate the fortress, disable the electronic security on with an electromagnetic pulse, drill through the mechanical locks on the vault door, and empty the vault, ideally staying dark the whole time. Then you'll escape the same way you came in.

The backup escape plan is more complicated. But it looks like it might be necessary after all.

You, your gunfighter friend Alex, and the safecracker Nick, are holed up in a neon-lit bar lounge. You're taking cover behind a couch, while the other two are behind the bar, along with the corpses of two Triad guards. You're on the 23rd floor. The vault is on the 24th, the top floor. You're waiting here for Ryuji, who you think might be an actual ninja, to finish scouting out this floor and report back to you.

Right now you're dealing with a bit of a problem with your escape route. Two Triads on the rooftop have found the rope you were planning to use to rappel out. Ryuji's uncle, Ken, is across the street watching them with a rifle scope. "What should I do?" he asks, his voice coming from the radio on your shoulder.

You say, "Is that rifle of yours suppressed?"

"It's the Springfield I used in Korea," he says. "So no. Just a rifle."

"All right, just let them do what they want. They're still in the dark about us, I don't want to give that up just yet. Get that helicopter ready. We might have to take the high road out of here after all."

"Got it."

You spend several tense moments in the lounge, trying to watch all the entrances at once. You're still holding your weapon of choice for this stealth mission, an antique crossbow. It's working out good so far, but it doesn't give you the same comfort as a gun. You take a moment to look at Alex and Nick. You can't see their faces behind the gas masks, but Alex gives you the "O.K." sign.

You hear a slight noise, and quickly aim the crossbow towards it. But it's just Ryuji returning. His sword is drawn and bloodied. His gask mask is off, hanging at his hip, one of the eye lenses badly cracked. He looks like he took a few punches to the face, but nothing worse.

"Hey, Ryuji," you say. "Welcome back. One of those guards give you trouble?"

"いつでも恋," he says. He walks to the bar, grabs a handful of napkins, wipes the blood off his blade. "戦いは終わらんけど ..." He grabs one of the surviving bottles of liquor from behind the bar, pops the top, and takes a long swallow.

"Fair enough," you say. "Good work out there. Let's keep moving."

The four of you move quietly up the east stairs on the 24th floor. You think about whether to proceed straight to the vault, or investigate the rest of this floor first.

Demons. Eldjötnar. Oni. Asura. Jinn. Monsters.

Whatever they are called, they now rule the world. On December 21st, 2012, the barrier separating Earth from what is now called the Eskathos ruptured, and these twisted creatures emerged from the Breach to gorge themselves upon the flesh and souls of humanity and sate their endless appetite for wrath, pride, envy, insincerity, falseness, boasting, and bellicosity.

Mad Wendigo spreads frozen wastelands and devours all those unlucky enough to cross its path. Radiant Lucifer spreads his devout cult of personality throughout the world. Jealous Andhaka abducts the wives of his despairing subjects. Two-faced Shezmu drowns northern Africa in orgies of wine and blood. Hidden Vucub-Caquix usurps day and night in South America. Arrogant Arachne weaves her monstrous fashion out of hair shaved from the heads of beautiful maidens. Evil-eyed Balor wages war and battle in Ireland and its neighbors to expand his kingdom.

Demons were not the only ones to return, however. Soon after the Breach opened, the Relics awakened their power. Only these men and women, mortal embodiments of divine weapons and tools, hold the power to match the forces of the Eskathos.

Excalibur and its Sheath arose first, followed by the Thunderbolt, the Tower of Babel, the Brahmastra, Gungnir, the Was and the Smoking Mirror.

The Relics defend human civilization and gather their strength until the day comes when they can lay siege to the Breach and assail the Eskathos itself.

You are one of them.

Sickly green lightning tears open the sky. Beyond it, you see nothing. Not the sky, not the stars, not more lightning, not even darkness. Your eyes just pass over the Breach and you just know there's nothing there.

There's nothing below the Breach either, which is why you're all looking up at it from the semi-comfort of the Vimana.

"So, this is the Breach," you say. "It's not what I was expecting. I mean, I've seen pictures, but they don't convey just how it's…"

"Weird?" Orianne suggests when you struggle to find the word.

"Close enough," you say. "Anyway, what are we supposed to do about it now?"

"The Breach is currently inactive," Commander Blumstein informs you telepathically, "but oracular Relics suggest it'll become active once you use your powers. I'd recommend doing something to prepare yourself for battle."

Kicking the hornet's net and then setting whatever comes out on fire isn't a bad plan, but it's not exactly a great one either.

Still, you work with what you have.

Your two options at the moment for combat buffs are to borrow some of Orianne's divine power, or asking Selene to prepare one of her orbital arrows so you can increase the power of your first successful attack.

- Borrow some of Orianne's power.

"Today is a good day", you hear a voice that's deliriously out of place, that would be your own voice, after all, you and only you are in the family kitchen. The last tear falls to the table, you realize that you finally stopped crying, moreover... You had been crying? "huh" you let out a sound of confusion, your mind feels, empty. Taking a spoonful of an off-brand coco puff clone of a cereal, you try to recount what's been happening. "I'mean getting ready for work, same thing I do everyday" you say aloud, a slow confidence overshadowing what you knew was a false statment. But that was before, this was now, whatever the truth was, it was made irrelevant by your own free will. Information is power, something that used to make sense to you, but now ignorance is... WAS, salvation. A new daw has donned, the horrors of yesterday stay are gone...

A sigh of relief escapes you, letting your self go into autopilot, you finish your cerealife and go about putting the dish in the dishwasher. Exiting the kictchen, you no longer remember what had made you so upset, or why you had felt so desperate. Standing in the bathroom, you wash your face and taste salt on your lips...? But it's not of concern, and as you make your way to the door, you look down at your right hand, noting that it has gone numb clutching with the grip of death onto the red stone. Releasing the tension and opening your sore hand you find an oddly shape rock... No, not a rock, a gem maybe, it's red like a ruby. You hand off the stone you had worked so hard to acquire to your left hand, and slowly open and close your stiff right hand, peering down at the unknown object. "what the fuck is this" you mutter feeling a wave of anger overtake your fragile mind. Your house is on the edge of town, behind the row of house on your street lies the forest. Aiming towards your backyard, and the forest that lies in that direction, you chuck the thing.

Finally, you set off walking to work, it's not far from here, this town is so small it takes an hour or so to reach the other side from where you are. Aso you walk, the sounds and sites of town flood back in to your awareness, a car dives by, a windchime's sing in the wind, trees sway, a cat dives under a car at your approach, and a smile finds its way onto your face, the illusion of malice you felt before, breaks(moretocome)

You stop by the park on your way, one that you need to cut through to get to midstreet. A memory's of having to walk through this park after hanging out at Lukes house come back to you, God back then you used to hate having walking through the creepy park at night. Acting on instinct, you look behind you to make sure nothing there, following you... Aaand, nothing. actually, this place has for as long as you known, been underused, no one seems to even use this place, sure a dog walker or two, but it's empty most of the time.

Feeling mentally sapped of energy, you take a seat on a green mental bench and pull out your phone.

1:17pm, and 12 messages from your co-worker. Seems about right.(choices soon)

You are Captain SAMANTHA WELLINGS, a newly minted captain of the Centauri Accord!

You sit in your quarters, awkwardly observing Elizabeth as she calmly sits across from your desk. Even though she's been attached to your crew all this time, you still weren't quite sure what to make of her. Sure, she had been rather useful support on your missions, but she had always done so to advance her own or her bosses' agenda. Hell, she even went on assignments without you even knowing about them.

Elizabeth continues to sit there calmly, waiting for you to make the first move. After all, you were the one to request a chat with her.

You are Harold, a middle-aged man living in suburbia alone, nearly friendless, and working at a dead-end job at the DMV. Living is boring, generic, your shoulder threatens to give out under the pathetic weight of your life.

One late night of drinking later, you find yourself free-falling off a bridge. Upon impact, the water is soft, like velvet. Like waking up from a dream.

Well, shit. Sobriety catches up as you open your eyes. Surrounding you is an environment you haven't seen in ages. Instead of a raging river in the middle of winter, your empty apartment, or some dark alley with broken bottle shards scattered about. Rather, it's...

You are Captain Carya Marseille-O'Hara of the Colony Transit Fleet: you also go by Carrina at times, a name you share with the soul of your twin sister Catrina who shares your body. After a brief run-in with the Luna Sphere's military during a test flight of a new weapons system, you met with Artesia Som Deikun at a restaurant in the lunar city of Von Braun.

“I see you've been well,” Artesia greets you as you and Rossweisse arrive at the restaurant to a series of welcoming embraces. “It's good to see you, things have been tense around here lately.”

“We noticed,” you tell her. “Had another run-in with your military.”

“What did they do this time?” she sighs, leading you to a booth.

“They intercepted an Anaheim experimental machine,” Rossweisse explains. “With the sisters in it.”

“That's not a good sign,” Artesia admits thoughtfully. “Which is all the more reason I'm glad you showed up now of all times.”

“She needs a favor,” Catrina muses.

You agree. “You need a favor.”

“I don't like asking for favors, let alone from my friends,” Artesia tells you carefully. “But there's been a rumor going around that I just can't ignore, and it involves you as well.”

“And what is the rumor?” Rossweisse asks.

“The rumor... is that Casval Rem Deikun has returned. And that he's here, in the Lunar Sphere."

Casval... the true name of the ace newtype pilot known to most of humanity as Char Aznable. Persona non grata to many in your organization even to this day, and officially listed missing in action. If it was broadly known that he has reappeared here there'd be an unofficial race to see who beat the crap out of him first. Even knowing his relationship to Artesia, you don't think anyone would even try to hold back.

“How sure are you?”

“I'm not,” Artesia admits quietly, glancing around the room to confirm that nobody is eavesdropping on the conversation. “As I said it's a rumor. But there are various reports of a blonde man in a mask, who some people think is a newtype... who has apparently been working with one of the local shipping companies.”

“And these rumors,” you muse, “we assume they mention that this man has smuggled mobile suit parts into the city?”

Artesia frowns. “I know that such a thing could be possible, but is it likely? That I cannot say.”

“It certainly is possible,” Rossweisse acknowledges in a similarly low tone. “The MS-18E was specifically designed to be smuggled behind Federation lines in parts.”

“Are you saying he's piloting a Kämpfer?” you ask incredulously. “You know, that'd sound crazy if it didn't make so much sense.”

The real question in your mind is not whether your mystery man could have smuggled a mobile weapon into Von Braun and gotten it working... you've seen a man restore a massive mobile armor here with none of his neighbors ever the wiser, so a single mobile suit assembled somewhere down in the maintenance levels is absolutely believable. No, the real question is how many mobile suits have been smuggled in on that mystery man's orders. It could be one ace custom machine, or it could just as easily be a squad or more. You personally have no doubt that the goal must have been to mount a sufficient force to contest control of the city, so if you had to place a bet you'd say there was at least one squad waiting for orders.

“You're thinking he brought a squad?” Artesia guesses.

You nod grimly. “Doesn't make sense to take that risk exactly once, at least not to us. Especially not if he's proven it can work once.”

“So you really believe his goal was a military buildup?”

“Why else would he smuggle weapons into the city?” Rossweisse asks.

You shrug. “We're not completely sold on this even being Char. There's no theatricality to it, it's not like watching a soap opera at all. Which would be surprising if it were him.”

“My brother does have that tendency, and I do find it strange that he would have waited this long to make his presence public,” Artesia admits quietly to herself. “Is it strange that I was hoping it really was him?”

“He's your brother,” you remind your old friend, “and he disappeared without a word to you. Even if you weren't especially close... no, it's not weird.”

“If it is him we'll know,” Rossweisse reassures Artesia.

“How are you going to handle this?”

Far off, nestled in an otherwise small Japanese town lies the Dark Gate Academy. An institution of tremendous size, the Academy holds a long kept secret. Unknown to the outside world, this unseemly town is home to a tear in our reality. A gate between our world and a bizarre dimension known as the Darkworld. The inhabitants of this hellish world breach this gate and attempt to flood into our reality and spread throughout the world on a regular basis. However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkworld creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.

They cannot close the rift between our world and the Darkworld, but the students and staff of Dark Gate Academy have dedicated their lives to using their amazing powers to hold back the darkness that plagues our world, even if it costs them their lives. They have risen up to the challenge and in secret have become great heroic defenders of the world as we know it.

For many years, Dark Gate Academy has held back the forces of the Darkworld, kept this unspeakable evil contained within their walls. But a dark cloud approaches, and times are about to change. A new chapter in the tale of Dark Gate Academy is about to begin.

“In and out, Kid. No longer than the length of a drink.”

The grey-haired Wolf pats you on the back and smiles as you stand outside the bar. He's always had a strange kind of faith in you.

Kid... your name for the last five years. Formerly Gado Nemoto, you lost your parents in a fire... ballistic fire. Just one of the many casualties of wartime. You miraculously survived, escaping the wreckage, but it was a solid week before you were taken off the streets. A wandering mercenary group found you, their leader taking pity, and decided to take you along with them. Even at eight years old, you were hesitant. But what else could you do? Where else could you go? You took a chance on the grey-haired Wolf that wanted to raise you. And that was how you became a member of The Beasts of Fortune.

Of course, they didn't just let you join the mercenary group right then. You were eight years old and had never handled a weapon. No, they spent the last four years training you up before Wolf even felt remotely comfortable with you holding a gun or a sword. Sure, you were always tall for your age, and by puberty you had already managed to cut a somewhat imposing figure, but you were still just a kid no matter how you looked. You needed training in the ways of the blade and the ways of the... filling people with lead. To their surprise, you took well to both, and by age twelve, you were considered more than capable to hold your own during assignments. You went from being the group's shared child to a proper member... though they still call you Kid. Sure, the group goes by animal naming convention, and sure a kid is a type of animal... but you still know how they see you.

You make your way to the entrance of the bar, as you are stopped by the man out front. “Hang on,” he mutters. “No underage kids allow-”

The man stops in his tracks as Bear, the largest of your companions, simply stares at him. “Uhh... you know what? Go on ahead, just don't buy anything,” the man clears his throat, worried for his own life.

You step inside the seedy tavern, and even the music inside gives a vague air of tension. The bar lies close to the borders between the Rubi and Safaia regions. The patrons are a mix of the Rubi people, and their recent invaders. In the corner, a small patrol of Safaia soldiers, proudly displaying their allegiance to Zenko Ugaki. All it takes is one wrong word or a look in the wrong direction, and things will kick off. Of course, things kicking off is your intention. That patrol is your target.

Wolf makes his way to the bar and orders a drink. That's the signal to the rest of the group to move as fast as you can... if you aren't finished the task by the time he finishes his drink, he's gonna be real disappointed.

“Head up, stay alert,” Pony whispers in your ear. One of the team's snipers, Pony earned his name from a rather simple place... he's pretty and all the women want a ride. And he's never been shy about his popularity with the opposite sex. Almost all his free time is consumed by it, yet when he's in the field he's an out-and-out professional.

“I think we should engage firing right away,” Weasel adds. Always the coward of the group, Weasel also earned his name for being jittery and hyperactive. “Think about it, guys. I know we have the whole duty to engage them, but we can just draw our weapons here, bing bang boom, they're gone!”

“Shut up, you'll draw attention to us,” the other sniper Snake is clear to point out. “Besides, we're not here to start the fight. Our client hired us to intimidate the soldiers, and only resort to violence if they draw their weapons first. You never betray your client.”

Those words mean a lot to Snake, considering the client is the one person he won't betray. Snake is even newer to the crew than you are, though he's much more experienced. He turned his back on a rival mercenary crew, even taking out some of their members, in order to join Wolf. Hence his own name, one he often takes umbrage with. While you can laugh off your demeaning name, you can see that it clearly bothers Snake.

Your group make their way over to the table of Safaia soldiers, as Pony takes the lead in addressing them. “You people are part of the battalion lead by General Aoki, aren't you?”

“Yes,” one of the soldiers answer. “We work under the general, and in the name of the great leader Zenko Ugaki!”

“Alright, calm the patriotism pal,” Weasel remarks. “We really don't give a crap.”

“And just who do you think you are?” the soldier asks.

“We're here to tell you to stop harassing the Rubi villagers,” Pony explains. “Countless instances of you and your patrols attacking innocents, stealing from the poor and starving, and worst of all, burning the houses of innocent families. Killing innocent men, women and children. This is already an unjust battle, but there stands nothing more unjust than that. It ends now.”

The soldier scoffs. “And you're going to make us? What are you, some kind of freedom fighter?”

“No. We're good men, nothing more.”

The soldier rises from his chair, and throws the first punch. Things kick off from there, and as the enraged Bear gets involved, things get very bloody, very quickly. A knife to the jugular and a snapped neck later, and Bear has taken out two soldiers within a couple seconds. Weasel goes to hit one below the belt, neglecting their armour and getting a smack across the face for it, leaving Snake to pick up the slack. While pony throws the first soldier across the bar, another comes rushing towards you. It's close quarters, so firing off a gun could be dangerous, could hurt civilians... so you go for your sword instead, drawing the long blade and readying it for the fight to come.
