You are a young human doctor, abducted by the K'tulu, and recently released by demand of the Galactic Senate. You've recently set out into the ruins of an ancient civilization near the main settlement of Velik Leis, only for the convoy to be ambushed. After fighting your way through a veritable horde of synthetics, you've made it to the broadcast station and are about to meet up with Enque's team.

Shadows dominate the second floor of the broadcast station as you exit the stairwell into a long corridor that seems to stretch the length of the building, the darkness broken only by the erratic light put off by the sparking corpses of synthetics and wide cracks in the wall and ceiling. Julius lets out a low whistle from behind you at the carnage left in the wake of Doeud's team as the two of you slowly make your way down the hall, "Damn...you sure do know how to pick your friends, Doc. These guys did a number on the synths..."

"Well yeah...I mean, do you really think I stick around you and Angel for your charming personalities?" You ask jokingly, drawing a short laugh from your friend as he shakes his head roughly.

"Holy shit, Jack, Angel was right...you really are an ass!" He retorts with a grin, before seeming to return to the moment as he casts a searching gaze down the hall, "So...how are we supposed to find these guys? All I'm getting anymore from my comms is static."

A small amount of concern wells up inside you as the white noise in your own comm unit crackles in your ear, before nodding to the eviscerated corpse of a Z'ho'don that you recognize from Enque's team, surrounded by several heaps of scrap that you're sure were once spider drones. "Follow the trail of bodies..." You answer grimly, looking over your shoulder to see your friend's mouth set into a thin line as a heavy silence falls over the two of you.

The pit in your stomach continues to grow as you slowly make your way through the maze of corridors, noting two more aliens' bodies among the scattered remains of synthetics, until a high pitched mechanical hum spins to life, shattering the silence, followed by a deep echoing voice, "Stop right there! Identify yourse-"

Your eyes snap to the doorway the voice is coming from, immediately pinpointing the voice's source as an enormous and heavily armored alien with an equally heavy looking gun pointed at you. Before the alien can even finish his sentence, however, a more familiar voice interrupts, "Put your weapon down, Ilos, they're here to help."

The large alien's beaked mouth clicks wordlessly a couple of times as he stares you down before he lowers his weapon and steps aside, "Fine, then hurry up and get in here before more of those Seeker drones show up."

You briefly wonder what the hell a seeker drone is supposed to be, before shaking the question from your head and making your way past the reptilian hulk with Julius, casting a quick look around the room as you do so. A small handful of aliens' heads turn towards you in interest, before quickly returning their respective tasks as you're approached by an Avnari with cybernetic limbs matching the description of the team leader's medical report. "Doctor Yarick, I assume?" He asks, looking briefly at Reece before turning his gaze towards you when your friend shakes his head and points in your direction. "Thank you for coming...I know it couldn't have been easy to get through the fighting out there."

You shake your head, "Don't worry about it, my friends and I don't leave people hanging if we can help it. Besides, I'm pretty sure that Enque is the only other person with medical experience left out here." You reply simply, drawing a nod from Reece as you're joined by another alien that's initially unrecognizable to you until you recognize the tattered remains of the once ivory robe draped across Enque's armor.

While you weren't sure what you were expecting the other medic to look like under his hood, the feathery hair, flattened nose, and slowly changing colors and texture of his skin to mimic the Avnari's render him almost unrecognizable until you hear his voice, "I've done what I can for now, Vega, but we don't have anything left other than some bandages and two doses of bamordin. Even if we did have more supplies, I wouldn't be comfortable moving Qun across that fighting." He reports quietly, before turning his attention towards you with a slow blink, his skin's texture shifting slightly again to match Reece's "Good to see you again, Jack Yarick."

You nod in response, though before you can say anything else, Vega lets out a sigh, "We can't stay here much longer, Doeud, not if we want to survive anyways. I'm certain we've got enough firepower to take out the command unit, but without air support or more numbers I don't see us getting close enough to pull it off."

You're somewhat surprised to hear just how much firepower Enque's team has, you knew that they had plenty of heavy weapons but, as you cast another glance around the room, you have to agree with the Avnari that they could probably blow the command unit into pieces and still have ammunition left over. "Maybe not, but I've already told you that I could patch into-" The other medic starts, only for his team leader to interrupt.

"Absolutely not, Doeud. I already told you, you're too important to go running off on your own to try and use a broadcast system that's been dead for centuries, I doubt you could even get the generators to this place working again. If we had more people to spare then maybe, but we don't."

>Continued.
>>
>>1029291
You raise an eyebrow at the short argument, wondering if maybe there's something to be explored there, though if Vega's against it then there's probably a reason for it. That said, after even just a brief look at the injured mercenaries sitting across the room, you agree with Enque that trying to drag them across that battlefield would be impossible without some kind of miracle, even if you can manage to help patch them up a bit more. From the way the battle was going before you managed to make it into the station, though, the Avnari's right about not having much longer before being overrun...if you could just manage to destroy the synthetic's command unit, that might change, but getting there would be a challenge, to say the least.

What should you do?
>See what you can do about helping Doeud patch up his teammates. You don't have a lot of time or supplies, but you have to be able to do something to help, right?
>Ask about Enque's plan to get air support. Nothing would change this fight more than that.
>Ask if you might be able to help make the push to destroy the command unit. You might only be one person, but there's no way you'll be able to get all these people back to the community center in one piece...and ending this battle would save a lot of lives.
>Try and help with an escape plan. You came here to help get Enque's team out of here, not get yourself and Julius killed in a suicide mission.
>Write-in.

Major- We need to adjust our battle plan, and we need to do it fast.

Unit 08 has collided with the 9th Angel’s main structure. I have the Technical Division running remote scans to determine the extent of damage caused by this impact.

Fortunately for us, the First Child managed to stay on top of the Angel. This should give us an unexpected chance to strike the Angel at close range.

Major.

The Angel's blast completely destroyed my orbital and re-entry equipment, I now have no means to safely reach the ground. It seems my Positron rifle was also damaged by the impact. At the speed we’re falling we’ll soon enter the cloud layer.

The Angel has been inactive since the collision. What are your orders, Major?

“Can you not just up and disappear like that?”you sincerely request from your most elusive teammate.

She eyes you with a sidelong glance as she frowns. “Said I'd meet you here.”

“I meant earlier on the boat,” you specify. “You just left. I was worried.”

“Sorry, mom,” she replies.

“C'mon Kyra,” you say with a shake of your head. “You could have at least told us what you were going to do.”

“You worry about you. I worry about me,” she rattles off her meaningless saying.

“Kyra,” you practically growl low in your throat. “Look –”

Before you can finish your thought, another furious yell in the distance from a barbarian on the warpath reminds you that you aren't that far away from another potential sucker punch. Or perhaps a confrontation much worse than that with farther reaching consequences. You sigh out in exasperation.

Licking your lips, you switch topics momentarily. “We shouldn't be having this conversation right here.”

“We shouldn't be having this conversation,” the thief retorts in a dark mutter.

Ignoring that jab you continue. “We can talk back on the hill you were observing the docks from. Farther from Kroll that way.”

“Fine,” she says.

“Good, let's take a stroll –”

Meet you there.” she emphasizes. Before you can properly inhale to voice your dissent she transforms again into that gaseous miasma of darkness and zips away, straight back towards the hills. You groan angrily, taking off into the sky and resorting to following her purple trail of magic once again.

A minute or so passes and you can feel the magic granting you flight ebbing away – forcing you to land now if you don't want to crash later. Thankfully your magically enhanced sight and your prior viewings through the crystal ball have given you an accurate idea of where Kyra has retreated to. Sure enough, she sits high up in the tree she was initially observing the Roscoli fleet from when the sun was still high in the sky. You choose to land beside her, the gentle disturbance of your weight shaking the branch and informing her of your presence immediately. You uncloak from your invisibility, now that you are secure from any more run-ins with Irontide's bunch, so Kyra can read the anger plain on your face at her constant distancing tactics.

“Want to talk about why you're running from Kroll?” she asks sarcastically, attempting to change subjects with the change of scenery. From here you have a wonderful vantage point to see the various fires dotting the coastal landscape, seeming so peaceful and natural from this distance compared to the sources of chaos they were when you were in the thick of it.

Disregarding her question, you continue with what you were going to say earlier. “We're a team. We should be looking out for one another. And you're making it unnecessarily difficult.”

“I do my own thing. No warnings, no communication. Disappear and reappear when the time is right. How I function. How I've always functioned.”

You simmer in annoyance at her reluctance to connect with you right now. “What is going on? Really. Randomly scouting against Blackburn's express orders? You've been completely gone for over a month. You've minimized contact with the rest of us as much as possible, abandoning us at the drop of a hat when you are forced to associate with us and don't you dare pretend this is how it has always been.”

“It is,” she lies. “Drop people when they slow me down.”

“Not your friends,” you counter.

“Don't have friends. Not in this business. Can't afford them.”

Anger finally rises in its entirety to your cheeks as you can't help but explode. “Do not give me that!” you practically snarl at her. Her head snaps to the side, staring into your glowing, glaring pupils as you give yourself a moment to calm down. You shake your head at her deflections. “Look, I don't know if you think you're being subtle about this, but I'm not so easily fooled. Whenever Rowe encounters a problem her first instinct is to run away and isolate herself. And you're doing the same exact thing! Why are you acting like this?

Silence descends as Kyra purses her lips and looks forward. You study her face looking for some sign of emotion but she maintains that unreadable mask even now.

. . .

A cool, night sea breeze blows past, causing you to shiver. Kyra is unfazed by the cold.

. . .

“It's my fault,” she eventually informs you.

You furrow your brow, confused. “What's your fault?”

“All of it,” she expands upon her original statement with even more vagueness.

“What are you talking about?”

“Remember the two heists? Ones I pulled the same night?”

“Yeah,” you recall, nodding your head. “The nobleman's sword and the lockbox on the boat.”

“Lockbox contained important documents. Couldn't steal them, though. Part of the contract. Had to copy the contents down. Kinda like tonight.”

You eye her warily as your mind begins to work, connecting the various threads. She meets your gaze unflinchingly.

“It was a list of names,” she tells you point blank.

You gulp. “I don't suppose –”

“Alan Percival Rodain,” she speaks your full name from memory. “Never use your middle name. Why's that?”

I'm going to dust off an old chestnut and try playing this game again. Last time I tried was a little over a year ago so I'm curious to see how it goes on /qst/.

How to play:
• Open an image of a species in MS Paint, or your editor of choice
• Make one evolutionary change to that species
• Save as .PNG!
• Post your new species in the thread with a description of what evolution you've added and why.
• Adding size increments or names is optional, but would be appreciated.

Notes:
• Unless stated explicitly, no species ever goes extinct. Old species can still evolve, even if they're not on the latest "chain"
• Try to make your evolutions gradual and realistic
• Every 12-24 hours I'll be rolling for a Random World Event.
• Have fun

The Setting:
The planet is similar to Earth around the early Cambrian Era. It's currently mostly covered in oceans. The animals in it are tiny and sightless. The landmasses of the planet are desolate, and not viable for most animal life at this time.

"Aw, you poor babies" A soothing, but nearly booming voice said to the four bruised and battered cat girls, all wearing unusually bright and fluffy blue ear muffs that clashed horribly with their black and red leather jackets "Who chewed you up and decided to spit you back out again? I thought all of you would be as sweet as sugar, What happened to you four?"

Silence fell upon the dimly lit room, which was filled to the brim with pillows and blankets strewn about the floor and rafters. The warm lights of the room buzzed like a drunk swarm of bees, and collective sound of purring drowned out the whispering and gossiping of the fish bone gang as they watch four of their own sitting before the boss.

They had sat up now, still too weak in the knees to stand fully, as the yellow golden eyes of their boss stared at them without a hint of anger. A look of relief washed over their faces as they looked up at her, lazing back in the shadows above them, laying forward to get a better look at them.

The four glanced at each other, their tails swish and wrapping together as they whispered into each others' cat like ears, shouting a bit as they tried to figure out which of them would get to explain.

The boss of the fishbone gang made a low growling noise, showing her displeasure as her eyes moved up in the darkness, signifying she had gotten impatient enough to sit up and take to her "throne" seriously

"IT WAS THAT DAMN WINGLESS DRAGON" they shouted in unison, as their bosses eyes frowned, and with a loud snap all the lights went out in the room with a wailing gust of wind "She humiliated us"

"Totally!" the smallest one, a tabby marked girl yelped, hissing as the eyes moved like their owner tilted her head

"Why? WOULD YOU FIGHT A DRAGON DIRECTLY!" the leader of the fishbone asked, as she stepped down from her throne, shaking the ground around her feet as she rushed her subordinates"

They yowled as she reached them, hugging each other as she stood over them

"You idiots" She grumbled, picking them up in a hug "We've been over this before...now repeat after me"

Something smells like peanut butter, really thickly of peanut butter, almost violently, like someone got drowned in the stuff right in front of me. I grumble angrily, covering my nose as the wonderful smell quickly gets on my nerves and overstays its welcome. Groaning, I sit up in my bed, wondering where my blanket went, before I look around trying to find out who the hell is making my room reek of peanut butter.

"GAH!" I shout, as I nearly fall out of the fire pit next to my bed, embers showing my face as I scramble and try to to keep my weight in the middle of the oversized metal pan.

make me and all the still burning coals spill out of it onto the floor. I catch my breath, breathing out a sigh of relief as I feel my heart pounding in my chest from this morning surprise. I can't remember how the hell I got into this thing after I set it on fire last night, since Yvette wanted to keep the windows open to get some fresh air into our room through the night.

Judging from how many towels she's placed around, it stormed through the night....glad it didn't get to any of my things.

I blink, slowly waking up as that cold morning air clears my head of my drowsiness, while the coals cool under my legs....Thank god mum bought me fire proof pajamas or today would've started off even worse.

"Oh May, you're awake!" Yvette shouts from across the room, making me glance up and see her mixing together something in a bright red bowl, a jar of peanut butter, the bag of sugar and a few dirty measuring cups sitting on the counter next to her "Sorry if the smell's bothering you, I just thought a batch of peanut butter cookies would be a nice apology for nearly flooding the room...and a nice treat to wake up to"

I snort and scratch my head, not saying a thing as I try and figure out how I get off this thing without tipping it over.

She giggles nervously as she goes back to making her cookies

"Just a week with a roommate and already I've nearly ruined our room" She says guiltily, as my phone begins to ring....with Jessie's ring tone

What do I do?
[]Tell Yvette not to worry about it
[] Tease the tree
[] Chew her out, angrily
[]Accuse her of trying to make me fat
[] See why Jessie's calling me and what she wants
[] Ask her why she's always baking
[] Take a shower, clean my scales and go for a morning walk
[] Search the room for Rowen, make sure she isn't around
[] See if Yvette needs any help with the cookies
[]Try and figure out what I want to do today

Two hundred years ago, in the shadow of the mountain at the center of the world, your ancestors fought a great war against the dragons.

Your ancestors lost.

The dragons ate every warrior who marched against them. They ate every magician who supported the warriors. Then they ate everyone else.

The only survivors were those who had remained in the south, outside the land called Dragon Pass. For two hundred years, Dragon Pass was nothing to you but a death sentence, a haunted boneyard, an enemy camp.

But civil war in your ancestral lands forced your clan to find a new home. A few heroes dared to explore the forbidden land to the north. That these heroes returned at all was amazing. That they returned to tell you that the dragons are gone and that Dragon Pass is nearly empty, open for the taking — this is a gift from the gods.

Your clan is part of the second wave of resettlement of Dragon Pass. You number some eight or nine hundred souls: mostly farmers and children, some warriors, a few nobles and magicians and god-talkers. You seized land not far from the holy mountain called Kero Fin, the mountain that gave birth to your chief god, the god of Storm named Orlanth.

You are not the only clan that came north. As many as twenty other clans or splinters of clans separated themselves from kinfolk and carved homes in this new frontier. Like you, they are Orlanthi. Your relations with these clans, for good or for war, determine whether your clan starts up a path of glory or drifts forgotten with the spirits who haunt this ancient land.

-----------------------

There once was a time when gods and people walked the earth together. Your clan traces its ancestry back to those times. Your clan history begins when you joined the forces of the storm god Orlanth. Back then, Orlanth was simply one of many upstart, rebellious gods bent upon conquest of the world. Orlanth's unique contributions at that time were personal honor and a close kinship to the other deities who seemed to be on the winning side.

After many tribulations, adventures and discoveries Orlanth proved himself worthy of marrying Ernalda, the Earth Mother. The two of them created the Marriage Ring and established great harmony in the world through this sacred bonding. Our clan took part in the wedding ceremony. Most clans either whooped with Orlanth or learned a secret from Ernalda. A few clans stood with Elmal, God of Horses and the Sun, as an honour guard.

How did our clan prepare for the great marriage?

>Your men and women donned gleaming armor and stood guard with Elmal, to protect the celebrants from Orlanth's many enemies
.
>Your men whooped with Orlanth and drank the Eight Known Drinks, so that their heads would hurt during the ceremony.

>Your women withdrew with Ernalda, and learned a List of Names, which they promised not to repeat to the men.

Nation: Avaros
Location: The Green Wood
Race: Avian
Religion: Spiritual/Realistic Pacifists. They don't believe in any higher powers. Believe life is precious, but also accept that violence is a part of life and is sometimes necessary and unavoidable.
Specialty: Medicine. You'd be hard pressed to find better doctors.

Fluff: Winged humans, the Avarosi came to the Green Wood a generation ago after being driven from their ancestral mountain home by invaders. Doctors by trade, they took advantage of their flight to better aid their neighbors quickly. As a nation of healers, they are a peaceful lot who prefer to avoid violence. They've seen quite a bit of violence, as they've often served as neutral parties on battlefields, tending to the wounded of either side. Because of their experience with violence, despite their aversion to it they understand that it is simply unavoidable at times, and train some of their people to learn to fight, preferring ranged weapons such as bows and crossbows, making use of their flight.
While it doesn't give them quite the same advantage as the mountains, they have taken to living high in the tall trees of the Wood.

Population: 525
(Archers: 75. 2.5*)

Weapons: 5* bows

Resources:Masterwork Juice, Cherry and Berry Wine/Beer, Wood, Cherries/berries, Alcohol

Buildings: Simple houses, Lumber Mill

Train Bowmen

Send out scouts to survey the lands outside the Wood.

Nation name: The Chilling Kingdom of Old
Race: Frost giants
Location:The Ice Barrens
Worship: They believe the entirety of the Barrens is where they're first people were created and it was what guided them eons ago. However when the Brun empire conquered the lands the giants were unknowingly put into a deep slumber in their tunnel citys under the barrens. Now they awake and know now is the time for them to prosper.

Regarding the Brunish Mystery, TGC reveals that the Maesar plane suffered an Ice Age due to an battle him and Flame had in the Ascendant Plane, home of gods. The Brunish. During the ice age, suddenly disappeared. That's all he knows.

Specialty: Ice Magic level 3, Capable of advanced Ice Spells:3.5 in 1 turns

Materials: Wyrd

Pop:583 Ice Giants, 45 Ursine, 426 humans

Buildings: Greater Temple, Great Fort around the entrance of the Ice Warrens. The city of Frjósa around the great fortress

Military: 58 Frost Giant Crusaders with Ice Weaponry, Shamans with Wyrdstone Staff Focuse's

Passive: Missionaries preaching the Word of the Great Cold

Well those radicals are problem, but we'll deal with it later. For now start freezing the confederacy of freehold with the shamans.

Now as for the problem east we'll be working on something. We are going to attempt to craft a body of titanic size out of Ice that will be controled by multiple shamans so It can move and attack in the event of conflict. Of course we expect this to take quite some time to complete. So basically the colossus of Rhodes but made of Ice and can be moved by enough shamans. Also it would look like TGC.

Born as a commoner, fate had much in store for the young Jean Capet, as his Lord, Jandant de Labendai took him in as his squire.
Years later, Lord de Labendai died without heirs, raising Jean to the rank of a Lord with his last breath.
However, the realm had fallen on hard times after two years of sickness that had befallen Lord Jandant de Labendai.
Still, there was hope. Jean took up the name and title of Lord Jean de Labendai, first of his name. In only a few months, he has proven a prodigy at ruling his lands, restoring what was left of them to peace and order, making many friends, but also a few opponents along the way.

At the moment, you are in your great hall, learning from Victor de Pierre, Lord Armand de Pierre's cousin and head smith about his trade.
>I think the metal itself is a wonder of creation. Iron, Copper, Tin and everything that can be made from them, like Bronze and Brass...
you tell him. Victor nods.
>I know this feeling very well, Lord Jean. Iron is hard, but rough. Copper is not as hard, but more flexible. Tin is very soft, allowing you to hammer it without having to warm it up beforehand.
During the next few hours, you learn enormous amounts about the abilities and limits of various metals and alloys, from steel to tin.
After lunch, Victor asks you for your will to continue. You nod eagerly.
>It's rare to have an expert of your format around. I should learn however much I can.
Victor smiles. Looks like your enthusiasm impressed him.
>Very well, what should I teach you about now, Lord de Labendai?
You don't have to think about this too long.
>I don't have much of a metal income from these lands. Whenever I need anything, I would have to import it. The ability to tell apart good quality from lesser qualities would be a great help to this cause.
Victor nods again.
>Well, this is easily done if you remember a few pointers. Those would be...
Dinner time comes and you learned a lot about quality estimations of ores, ingots and finished goods.
>Thank you, Victor. This was incredibly helpful.
you tell the man, who makes an appeasing gesture.
>No reason to thank me. I enjoy having a student this eager.
he answers.
The night comes and in the morning, the smiths and traders of House de Pierre take their leave.
>It was a wonderful stay, but we have to go sometimes. Can't have our apprentices get too cocky.
Victor jokes. You chuckle and wish them a safe travel.
Now, that they are gone, you are faced with your usual decision. What do you want to spend your day on?
