Chapter Eight: Pandemonium

Dis! The first city ever built by the hands of man. The city that was first the center and now the end, of the world.
Dis! The end of your quest, the city that has called your name for nearly three decades now of lost time.
Dis! Greatest work of the First Men, vast and beautiful and grand and hateful. You despise it. The city that killed the sun and damned humanity all for the sake of its own vanity and power. How many atrocities have you already seen as you passed over its cacophony of architecture? How many people suffer here? How many sinners revel in the time they bought with the death of God himself? With their betrayal of their own kin?

The wood of your staff creaks beneath your grip as you stare out the window of the renegade train. Your name is Orion, Lamplighter and Witch-finder and you have come to pass judgement. You’ve come a long way just to be here today.
You are armed and armoured, both in righteousness and in admittedly more practical actual armour. You wear your tattered Lamplighter cloak over your runeplate, your scabbard and the reclaimed sword within hanging from it. You had won the sword from Sacrament’s traitorous mayor when you first re-emerged from the wastelands. You have your staff, one end shod in iron and the other a ruined mess from a rough encounter with a golem.
And you have the lamp-post, wrapped and bundled in thick canvas to contain its light. Once a central lamp-post, ancient artifacts built to protect the settlements of Man and the object of the Lamplighter’s duty, it has been broken and ripped from its base. The circumstances of how this happened will always be your greatest shame but what is now trapped within it is your greatest hope.

A broken shard of sunflame, divine flesh of God. You have come here to seek out its brothers and to reignite the sun. You have borne it upon your back and if you were to remove your gauntlets, your blistered and blackened hands would be proof of it. One way or another, your journey with it ends now. You are here in Dis and you will not leave it until you triumph or you die.

The railway beneath you rattles and screeches as Sleeper, the half-mad train that the Second Men had seen fit to give a brain, forces its way down the aerial rail. These tracks, much like everything else in Dis, are ill-suited to you and are the wrong size. The train is tearing itself to pieces as it carries you all over the city.
Dis is strung with a hundred aerial rails just like this, curving and swooping through vast bronze megaliths from the First Age, shining silver skyscrapers of the second and the web of suspended paths and roads that connect all of Dis together, from the lowliest undertowns that spill out into the chasm to the flying predators hidden in the clouds that hang webs across rails to snare the unwary.

The suspended rooftop railways of Dis have a multitude of users, from Third Age steam trains lit from within with unwholesome green flame to handcars to rail-chariots pulled by serpents. But it has nothing like Sleeper, a gleaming silver bullet that grinds itself gruesomely along the rail. Even if you hadn’t been immediately ambushed by an old enemy upon your first stop, you would be drawing attention. Your arrival has been announced.

“God,” Abe says as he peers out the window at the receding station where you had closely fought off that wretched Imp who has been dogging your travels as of late. “What was that all about? Wasn’t that Zeno’s imp?”
He keeps one hand over his chest and abdomen, where a section of his body has been petrified by a gargoyle’s bite during your battle to wake the Sleeper Rail. Abraham is, as far as you’re concerned, a good man. He probably doesn’t deserve to be here and yet you somehow picked him up anyway. He has no particular aptitude for magic or great deeds but he can cook and can be trusted to be stalwart in the face of darkness.
A rifle, obtained from bandits a short time ago, lies uselessly on his lap. The stone grinding against flesh hurts him too much to easily move or to use such a weapon effectively. You can see his hands shake. And yet not once does he look back.

“It’s a long story,” you tell him. It truly was. “I just wish I knew who his helpers were.”
The imp, former Mr Stocks, had not been alone. He had been accompanied by creatures in the bodies of humans.

“They just looked like imps wearing human bodies to me,” Beatrice says. She shrugs when you and Abe turn to look at her.
“What? It seemed obvious to me.”

Beatrice doesn’t look well. Her skin is pale and cracked, faint blotches running down and mottling her neck. Her eyes are bloodshot and ringed with black and purple bruises that seep along her face. Her voice is ragged and raw, possessing all the beauty and elegance of broken glass.
This is normal for her. She is a witch or former witch, tamed long ago by a Lamplighter’s seal and imprisoned. It had been quite the surprise for you when you had found her living in Sacrament as if she was a human. As if she deserved a human home. But she has her own penance in a sense, ingesting gunpowder where other witches eat dirt and reclaiming the fire in her blood at the cost of constant weakness. Her own body and blood are forever at war over stolen power.
Your companionship has been rocky at best. You have done your best to treat her in the way that a traitor to mankind deserves and she has always taken that far too personally. But now, after the two of you have saved each other’s lives and shared your darkest moments, you are willing to trust her. She comes in search of absolution that she will probably never find and she still seeks power and magic in the guise of forgiveness but she tries her best.

“What are we going to do? You can’t tell me nobody’s noticed us now!
Abe paces from side to side, his hand forever upon his ‘injured’ side.
“People aren’t going to like us or what we’re here to do. And…”
He looks back out across the blasphemous skyline towards the distant Sea of Mud and the end of the world.
“There’s a lot of people here.”

“Knowledge should be our first priority!,” Beatrice yells to be heard over the screeching train. “We don’t know anything about this fucking place!”

You turn away from the window. The view is sickening.
“No. We need to find a way to lay low first. This is enemy territory.”

“No shit. Which is why need more information!”
She always curses. It’s as vulgar as every other aspect of her life.

“We need to rest and recover,” you tell her. “Look at Abe! Look at you!”

“I admit,” Beatrice says woozily. “I am not feeling my best right now. A bit of rest could do us all some good and Abe really needs to get decursed. But how exactly do you plan to fucking ‘lay low’ like this? I don’t know if you noticed but we just blazed into town on a shitty relic train!”

“We just need to find a safe stop and disembark! Sleeper, what can you see of the rail ahead? Do you think you can find us a place to hide?”

It takes a few seconds for Sleeper to reply, the train rattling and shaking across the unfamiliar sky-rail.
“This is not a pleasant city.”

“We’ve noticed.”

“No, not just that. These rails are not built for me. I am doing everything I can to stay upon them but it still hurts. I am sustaining damage to external systems at a consistent rate.”

“Still,” the witch pipes up, “aren’t you happy to finally be here? You’re fulfilling your duty!”

“Happy?”
The Sleeper Rail is quiet for a second more.
“If only. I hate this place. Simply being here is my act of defiance against it. But there is no longer purpose to my existence. At this rate I will cease to be railworthy in less than an hour.”

You shake your head. It may be Sleeper’s purpose to travel to Dis but he has a different one now. He is a relic of the Second Age and all such artifacts will be needed in the time to come.
“Just let us off and leave as fast as you can. Get back home before it is too late for you.”

“And do what?”
Sleeper’s voice is as monotone as ever, no hint or trace of emotion.
“I was ready to die when I believed my function would never be completed. And now that it has there is little else. I wish to scorn this place.”

“You already do by your own existence. But if we are successful you will have an obligation to keep yourself for further use.”

“I’m afraid I don’t follow.”

“We’re going to fix the world,” Beatrice speaks up. “Relight the sun and make everything alright again, bring back the Fourth Age. We just talked about this didn’t we?”

“Exactly,” Abe says. “You’ll be important then.”

“The new world needs you far more than the old, Sleeper.”
Unable to look it in the eye you settle for simply staring at the screen it has in the wall. The red dot has moved off the little line entirely and the image is skipping and shaking in an unhealthy manner.
“How are they going to rebuild the golden age without you around to act as an example? You’ve done well to get us this far so once this is over just limp home and wait.”

“Done well,” Beatrice mutters. “Yeah he did a great fucking job trying to kill us just before. Real standup guy.”

“I will consider this proposal,” Sleeper states. “But for now I believe there is more pressing issue at hand. We appear to be getting flanked.”

“What?”
You rush over to the window, your eyes straining against Dis’...everything. And then you see it, a thin silver sky-rail that twists close to the one that the Sleeper Rail is riding. And pulling ever closer along it is an armoured carriage with a closed off roof. You can see the imp’s skeletal face in the carriage’s window before it pulls back.

Abe joins you, peering out.
“Is that a pump trolley? How is it moving?”

“It’s too fast to be a handcar. Beatrice!”

“On it!”
Beatrice pulls out her gun, wiping dried blood away from her eyes as she takes her sights.
“You’re lucky that I can do this shit no matter how bad I feel. Sleeper, open the windows for us.”

“The windows do not open. They are always locked.”

>Introduction:

"There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time." ~ Malcom X

You are Fortuna Mistral, an aspiring King of Fighters combatant and local Kyokugenryuu Karate practitioner... And every part of your goddamn body hurts like a motherfucker right now. Yesterday, your sensei Tatsuya sent you to "Shangri-La", an apartment complex home to some of the toughest street fighters/vagrants/god-knows-what in South Town with instructions to fight your way through each floor and reach the top to obtain your money for food for the week. While you were able to do that, meet a Kunoichi that was out-of-place in such squalor and learn a couple of lessons from the Kung-Fu Wizard that had your money along the way...

You got demolished within sight of the exit via wall-of-Ki fired from the hands of one of the biggest, smelliest, strongest "Karate Hobos" you've ever had the displeasure of fighting. Fortunately, Tatsuya finally got worried and went to check up on you and dragged you out to a hospital pretty quickly, limiting the damage done. Still, it's disconcerting to feel this weak and powerless with little more than a week from the start of the tournament that could get you into this year's "King of Fighters" competition...

"OK, your Lv.2 Fighter has been spotted by a bunch of Orcs. Most of them are armed, but they're not close enough to try and engage combat right away. What do you do?"

So of course, Tatsuya is crashing in your hospital room and making you play D&D and study up on off-the-wall action flicks from his personal collection until you're healed up to resume training in earnest... Honestly, you're tempted to sneak out tonight and get some "Alone time", because it feels like you're brain's going to melt if you go through another goddamned D&D session as a Fighter facing impossible odds.

"Can't I at least try and multi-class into something fun like Unarmed Swordsage or Muscle Witch?" you groan, the die in your hands still showing some teeth marks from when you had to "Roll" it with your mouth a few days ago.

"I told you 'Tuna, I don't support homebrew classes. Besides, no real Kyokugenryuu gal would run anything except Fighter" is his reply. "Now roll before the nurse gets back here and kicks me out again."

>A. Roll 2d20 for Initiative & Combat.

>B. Roll 1d20 for Diplomacy.

>C. Ask him for a Level check for this encounter, then roll up to 3d20 for what feels right. (Write-In Vote)

>D. "Can't we do something else? This is like the ninth character I've made today and they're all starting to melt together."

Sorry about that.

===

"Fuck it, I'm going in on 'em Sensei" you say with a sigh, god-knows how many of these things you've done just today alone.

"There we go... Roll for Initiative & Combat."

You blow the d20 for luck, then roll it on the small fold-out tray built into your hospital bed. "A four? Damn it all..." Tatsuya nods, then you go through the routine again and get a much better outcome.

"OK, you don't exactly get a good jump on the Orc brigands, but you KO one of them straight away with your "No Killing" buff... But you get set up to land right in front of the largest, slowest of the Orcs and he's not too happy."

"Figures as much... What are my options?" you groan.

Tatsuya does a roll with his dice on the floor, then explains "The Orc in front of you goes to swing his +3 Battle Axe."

"How big is the weapon?"

"Almost as big as your character."

"Does the Orc have a pretty big wind-up then?"

"Big enough that if you get good rolls, you might be able to dodge it" Tatsuya explains as he looks at the door leading out to the hallway again, the threat of the Ice-Cold nurse kicking him out looming large in his mind.

"Hmm... What to do...?"

>A. Roll 2d20 for Constitution & Combat Damage.

>B. Roll 2d20 for Acrobatics; One for a jump and another for the landing.

>C. Roll 3d20, then explain how you run up the hilt of the Orc's weapon and smack him in the face.

>D. Write-In Vote.

Your name is Haskell, son of Sven. A young Norse man of about seventeen, and heir to a family that has long since begun spiralling, and a farm that has been fallow for too long. A father who lost most of his hand raiding, a mother who took ill on a sickness brought back on the longships, and a brother who’s entire raiding party hasn’t been heard from in six months, presumed lost to the sea.

That’s turning around. A local priest explained the recurring dream you’d been having: prophetic in nature, a way for Odin to let you know you’d been chosen as a Paladin, a champion of his religion along with your three oldest friends. Unfortunately, neither Odin, nor anyone else of his pantheon can contact you until you find the mythical Atlas of the Conqueror. It was last held by Charlemagne, and is rumored to be somewhere on mainland Europe. That doesn’t matter so much, though. They say you don’t find the Atlas; it finds you when it thinks you’re ready for the vast responsibility it places on your shoulders.

“I’ll be back,” you say, simply and angrily, to Bjorn as you turn to walk out the door. The man opens his mouth to say something, but simply lets you leave. He probably thinks you wouldn’t listen anyway, and you don’t blame him.

You slam the door behind you, and march towards Svala, who turns with a huff, rolling her eyes as she sees you approach her. She crosses her arm and waits for you to to get to her.

“What the fuck do you mean I haven’t earned an explanation,” you shout as you get within an arm’s reach, pointing at the shieldmaiden aggressively. “A childhood of torment isn’t enough to get me some details as to this fucking mood swing you’re going through?”

“No,” she says through gritted teeth, in a rare attempt to hold back her temper. “It isn’t, Haskell, because just going through something isn’t a very impressive fucking feat.” Her voice is starting to rise, and her eyes are locked into yours. “Maybe if you do manage to do something impressive, you’ll get your explanation then.”

“And who the hell gets to decide what’s impressive,” you ask, spreading your arms wide in exapseration. “You? That hardly seems fair!”

“Yes, me,” she spits in reply. “You want something from me, and that’s the fucking price. Take it or leave it.” With that, the girl spins on a heel, and leaves you alone in the road, seething in your own fury, suddenly tired from the days drain, both physically, and emotionally.

I was told that this can be a place where I can run this sort of thing.
Now I don't know much about classic tabletop RPGs and whatnot (dice rolling and stat allocation) so here's how this is gonna go.

Do not take this quest seriously, NEARLY everything here is arbitrary and just for the sake of fun.
That is the only rule.

Hey /qst/!
I hosted an evo game here a little while back, but it didn't really catch on, so I'm trying again to see if there's any interest. What sort of creatures will we come up with this time?
>How to play
Simply take one of the images I post, and make a slight alteration to it, with an explanation of what and why (Please try and be gradual and at least semi-realistic). Save it as a .PNG, then upload it so another anon can evolve it further!
>Creatures
Ubi- Algal life forms that clump up together, drifting through the ocean currents. When clumps get too big, they sink to the ocean floor, though this is a rare occurrence because of...
Idrai- Idrai are tiny insect-like creatures adrift in the currents of the ocean of Alien World, nearly completely at its mercy. However, when they come across a patch of floating Ubi, they unfurl their 'wings', allowing them to land on the patch, and feast, using small claws to grip the Ubi.
Rilva- The Rilva are the voracious predators of the Idrai, and propel themselves through the current using their three flagella. (Think of them as sideways not!jellyfish).
And finally, the Dheng, lowly, omnivorous scavenging bottomfeeders, feeding on scraps of Idrai and clumps of Ubi that have sank to the sea floor. As of yet, they have no natural predators, but the scarcity of food keeps their population stable.

Oh, you're back OP.
Lets see what happens this time, since I did plants last time ill do a creature this time.

A mutation causes some Dheng to grow controllable fleshy protrusions. While this is not enough for them to become a dominant strain, the slightly increased mobility helps them to struggle up to the point of being a fairly common existence.

You are a fresh recruit to your hometown's City Guard, young and inexperienced, you aspire to become a distinguished adventurer and hero, but lack the funds and experience to do more than fend off the occasional slime, and even then you usually rely on the help of your coworkers. With no legendary weapons, latent magical power, or wise old mentors, it looks like you'll be stuck as a lowly guard for forever, but you refuse to give up on your dream!

For now though, you need to hurry to your station! You're meant to help one of the more experienced guards look over the west gate this morning, but a late start to your day threatens to make you tardy to your first shift! Sticking to the main roads, you're certain you'll be late, but maybe if you cut through the alleyways you'll make it in time...

First time doing this thing, gonna take a while before I figure out how to best do these things, so I'm trying to start off small and simple. I hope you enjoy it nonetheless!

Welcome to Spirit Detective Quest! This quest, as the title suggests, takes place in the world of Yu Yu Hakusho, though it does not take place during the events of the show. You're a young highschooler, one who will find himself granted the title of Spirit Detective, and will be charged with tracking down demons and other supernatural criminals.

>Rules

Each time I make an update, there will be a ten minute window in which you can vote between various options I have provided. Write-ins are accepted and encouraged, but I do reserve the right to veto them. Once ten minutes have passed, the option (or suitable combination) with the most support will win.

You can choose multiple options, but be mindful of when that doesn't take any sense. Saying you want to go talk to someone and then talk to someone else in one post doesn't make much sense.

Also, in combat, I may veto selecting multiple options depending on how feasible that seems.

As far as combat, you will roll to attempt different options. I will not tell you what the number needed is ahead of time, so use your heads and balance risk/reward. Sometimes, you should take riskier options if they can yield greater payoff. Other times, it's best to play it safe. Use your judgement.

This is not Dragonball, and while there are sometimes ways to bring back the dead, they are few and far between, so do not assume that anybody you kill/let die will be coming back.

I hope you all have fun.

#003-Killer Bee

You are Lucas Mars, an up and coming fighter from a small town traveling the world. Now caught up in a conspiracy with crime group Shadaloo apparently kidnapping fighters, you just can't stay out of trouble...

Just awhile ago, you got partially interrogated and briefed by Interpol agent Chun-Li. (She's nice but kinda scary with the whole secret agent thing)

And befriended Ansatsuken fighter Sakura (Very energetic. You'll have to get to know her more to get how she could learn such technique...)

It's 5:30 PM Japan time. You stand at the scene where you were almost attacked by one of Shadaloo's "Dolls." (Which you just ran right past, but you likely would've been attacked. She seemed out of it...)

You're sure the Doll is still following you, and you intend to get some answers out of her that Interpol kept hidden.

How should you proceed...?

4 players in charge of 4 space-faring civilizations
>2219 A.D
It's been 40 years since the collapse of the Orion Federation of Empires. Apocalyptic civil war destroyed all but six of the member civilizations. Two won pyrrhic victories, their empires in shambles. The other four were too small and too distant to be affected.
4 players (Including the Author) choose the four distant civilization and build them. The building will take some time, as there are unit slots to fill for both ground units and space fleets. A system has been devised for assigning stats. Players will roll for number of planets in their starter system.

After Empires are chosen the players will have to form a new coalition of young races and empires to fend off an external threat. This will include governing decisions, military choices and random events

If you're interested state your faction. Must be an existing faction from fiction you can find plenty of pictures for (Covenant from Halo, Zerg from Starcraft, Empire from Starwars, Imperium from Dune, etc) For instance, if you wanted to be the Covenant, claim it. If you're techtarded or aren't interested in cropping photos let me know, but I run games with lots of pictures and sometimes I'll use paint to make charts. Your claiming post should contain a picture that represents your faction, something we can use to get a feel for your civilization. I'll go first, to demonstrate the format.

So, this is my claiming post. I picked my factions, cropped a bunch of pictures of units and ships and anything else that's cool and has to do with the civilization. For all intents and purposes, you're slightly tweaking the lore of whatever faction you choose. Because at first you only start with one system and you and the other players are the remains of a loose coalition.
After you claim your faction, the next post should be units. There are 4 unit types you need to come up with. We'll tackle them one at a time, with the first one being Assault. So, if in your first post you claimed the Covenant from Halo, your next post would be your Assault unit. Let's say you wanted it to be Grunts. Post a picture of the Grunts, and then establish their stats. Again I'll post to demonstrate, as well as giving an example of the stats system

Actually, are we allowed to slightly adjust the characteristics of our chosen species?
cause i want to play a ceph lookalike species that are actually Mgalekgolo like sentient parasitic worms inside bioengineered bodies connected to robot bodies, is that allowed?

You're a teenage boy in a probably magical land of legendary knights, and luckily for you, you just happen to be one of Sir Figland's best squires!

Up to now, you've mostly been molding yourself into the perfect vessel to take in more information and skills, and you feel like you're definitely ready to grow.

As you think about all of this, you realize your friend was talking to you about something and is waiting for your response! What do you do? (If multiple people are interested, roll a d100 and the highest gets it, or you can all agree on something)

Your buddy Hegmas was trying to remind you about your pending promotion that's likely to occur later today, and was glad you at least listened to him on the second try.

You seemed to have gained some talking stat from doing a talk, but maybe this was just like a tutorial stat. Either way, good job.

Anyway, you tell Hegmas that you're excited for it, and he leaves to go do his own work now that his break is over.

Any preparations you wanna make for your promotion happening later?

Oh shit nigger it's a /qst/ adventure thing. That I'm pretty sure I saw someone did before and I'm ripping them off but I can't remember the name so I can't credit them. Yea.

7 persons form an adventuring party in a nondescript generic fantasy land. Each with their own colour code for my convinience: Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Teal, Orange and Purple.
Each chacacter needs at least 1 player to be the voices in their head to tell them what to do n shit. And the party only needs 4 active members. The rest are part of the Backup Reserve Formation.

Just give yourself a name with the character's team color to identify which person you belong to. Ex: "Red Faggot"

The party's current quest is to slay a pirate captain.

On the way to the nearest port, the party made camp and appointed Clackie Chan the Orc Monk to keep watch. Now Clackie needs to keep the party safe until somebody switches shifts with him.

This is a thread created for the discussion of Quest threads, as well as sharing of advice and guidance for aspiring or current QM's. Posters looking for fun should look elsewhere.

Please do (not) shitpost, and please report any shit posters attempting to derail discussion or cause strife. This means evading tripfag drama or discussion about controversial subjects such as the decentralization of the roman empire.

https://twitter.com/Eisenstern/lists/quest-runner-directory/
https://twitter.com/tgquestlist/lists/quest-master-directory
These are two directories containing the tweets of many current QM's. While a twitter is by no means mandatory, it is a useful tool for both you and your players. To get added to the second list, tweet @tgQuestList. Spamming tweets unrelated to your quest may result in its removal.

IRC Channels:

[Hugbox] #ques/tg/enerals @ Rizon.net (barely related to quests; enjoys Larro quests and animæ)

>QM Question
How far would you take a "write-in"?

>Player Question
Is it unreasonable for a QM to say no to a "write-in" if it derails the original intent of the quest's story even if it's popular?

I almost always take write-ins. I usually spell out a few details about the decision to be made and let the suggesters have at it.

Also I'd say it's fine to say no to a write-in that contradicts established stuff about the quest or the character.
