http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/nasa-says-emdrive-does-work-it-may-have-also-created-star-trek-warp-drive-1499098

>Nasa has proven that the controversial space propulsion technology EmDrive works and also accidentally might have made a warp drive, as used by the Star Trek Enterprise to travel, possible

>It was thought up and developed by a British scientist called Roger Shawyer, who spent years having his technology ridiculed by the international space community even though Boeing licensed it and the UK government was satisfied it worked.

>Nasa has been testing the technology for a while and it confirmed on 29 April that researchers at the Johnson Space Center have successfully tested an electromagnetic propulsion drive in a vacuum, and although it did not seem possible, the technology actually works.

>"Thrust measurements of the EmDrive defy classical physics' expectations that such a closed [microwave] cavity should be unusable for space propulsion because of the law of conservation of momentum," Nasa's José Rodal, Jeremiah Mullikin and Noel Munson wrote in a Nasa Spaceflight blog.
What is EmDrive?

>EmDrive is based on the theory of special relativity that it is possible to convert electrical energy into thrust without the need to expel any form of repellent.

>Shawyer's critics say according to the law of conservation of momentum, his theory cannot work as in order for a thruster to be propelled forwards, something must be pushed out of the back of it in the opposite direction.

>Nasa researchers posted on the Nasa Spaceflight forum that when lasers were fired into the EmDrive's resonance chamber, some of the laser beams had travelled faster than the speed of light, which would mean the EmDrive could have produced a warp bubble.

>A post by another user analysing the EmDrive experiment said "the math behind the warp bubble apparently matches the interference pattern found in the EmDrive".

So, what do you make out of this?

Patently false.

The drive seems to be able to emit EM radiation to produce a small amount of momentum. That's all that's been confirmed so far.
>>
>>Shawyer's critics say according to the law of conservation of momentum, his theory cannot work as in order for a thruster to be propelled forwards, something must be pushed out of the back of it in the opposite direction.

Well, that's clearly wrong. Everyone knows that electromagnetic fields can generate force without expelling matter.

The drive does produce far more momentum than the impulse of the photons emitted, which is why it has so much credible attention.

This is not science yet, some British dude found some bizarre phenomenon and that's what EmDrive is, looks like it works and probably even produces space time bubbles but no one knows how, there's several hypothesis nothing much consistent, due its simplicity, cheap and easy implementation it will be flying soon, the bad thing is that while used as weapon it makes nukes look inoffensive as it enables relativistic speeds to be achieve turning one simple ship into several tsar bomba.
>>
>>44574555

Why do we operate from the assumption that there are physical laws at all, rather than regard them as subjectively and observably true but potentially alterable or even outright false?

Many observed constants and laws of the past today are not considered either; we have to get used to the concept that sometimes one of the presumptions formerly used was not always correct; just generally correct and observed.

If we presume there are types of waves, particles, energy sources, and so forth which we do not interact with directly or observe we have to presume it is possible for them to violate (or seem to violate) physical laws.

But we're not talking about reaching light speed, we're talking about EXCEEDING light speed. Furthermore, there are things about matter that we still simply don't understand, particularly the fundamental forces of gravity and electromagnetism. It could very well be that constants we've come to taken for granted are actually variable under certain conditions. Matter at the quantum level is different from matter at the atomic level, and we weren't even aware that the quantum existed until the last century. Eventually we'll see if your statement(current scientific understanding) holds in light of this new development, or if there's an as yet undiscovered caveat to it.

We warp drives now.

We could use androids as the pilots. I think if we unlock the entire Higgs field, we may be able to teleport from one area of the solar system to the other.

I don't know, I'm really stoned on Valium, weed, booze and tramadol right now so I can't think clearly.

But Lorentz factor and generating enough energy to travel at light speed poses problems.

Then you have time distortion, temperature in space, how do you stop the equipment from freezing the further away it moves from a star.

All sorts of things.

I just hope that we can conquer these problems within a few generations and exploration can begin.

The golden age of space travel would be glorious to be in.

This new discovery used an electromagnetic field to bring about its results. In order for organic life to be protected from the ravages of the radiation it produces, an equally strong magnetic field must be generated. This field must be generated by an electromagnetic field generator embedded in our bodies that can reliably be harnessed and recalibrated at will in order to compensate for what will likely be variable levels of energy generated through acceleration and any necessary sustenance of terminal velocity. All persons using such technology must be well-versed in its usage, and it must have a long proven track record of accomplishing its stated purpose of protecting its user from harm. Thankfully, such technology already exists, and has for a long time.

Your argument is purely a semantic one. For all intents and purposes, if you can decrease the amount of time it takes for something to get from A to B, you've increased its velocity. In theory, we could use this technology to transmit radio waves across vast distances(think between planets/stars) in an instant.

Is it cheating to warp space-time? Yeah, kinda. In the latter scenario, would we consider our communications "sped up"? Absolutely.

>we should do this because we can

Modern science is derived from the legacy of Christianity. You merely inherited it from "Christ-fags", and you deride their religion to conceal the fact that your so-called rationality wasn't cut from whole cloth, and was never at odds with Christianity until some edgy faggots in the Enlightenment decided it was. Your claims against religion are as intellectually dishonest and irresponsible as your calls to ignore the need for ethics in science.

Mankind has no need for such arrogance. Capability must be tempered with responsibility, if we are to avoid destroying ourselves.
>>
>>44582149
From OP link

What is EmDrive?

EmDrive is based on the theory of special relativity that it is possible to convert electrical energy into thrust without the need to expel any form of repellent.

Shawyer's critics say according to the law of conservation of momentum, his theory cannot work as in order for a thruster to be propelled forwards, something must be pushed out of the back of it in the opposite direction.

However, EmDrive does preserve the conservation of momentum and energy – to put it simply, electricity converts into microwaves within the cavity that push against the inside of the device, causing the thruster to accelerate in the opposite direction.

Shawyer proved that if you had a 100kg spacecraft, the thrust would be in a clockwise direction and the spacecraft would then accelerate in an anti-clockwise direction.

Saying the medieval scientist's discoveries were driven by some bog-standaed christian fear and awe of God is just as dishonest. I guarantee you, the concept of "god" that 90% of those scientists had was more in line with deistic theology, albeit with a christian veneer.

Even if I'm wrong, it doesn't matter. The christian-scientists of yore are long gone in today's world. It would be like calling modern day Islamic states pro-science simply because of the (very important) discoveries made during the golden age of Islam; times change, and the torch of progress has once again changed hands.

>>
>>44582574
>Even if I'm wrong, it doesn't matter.

Of course it does. It means you don't know what the hell you're talking about. You are charging that there's some inherent Christian intolerance to the study of the natural world so you can elevate your own belief system over one that you don't even care to understand. That is the very definition of intellectual dishonesty, and the antithesis of rational inquiry. If you want to charge that the average Christian is anti-intellectual and anti-science, I must admit there are indeed people like that. People are prone to willful ignorance, as your baseless claims so helpfully illustrate.

Meanwhile, the oft-cited "Christian Dark Ages" apparently found the wherewithal to allow room for intellectuals to expand human knowledge that we all benefit from today, while countless modern atheists point and shriek at debunked claims such as "Galileo's persecution was purely religious and anti-scientific in nature," when the truth is that Galileo was promoting a theory he couldn't yet back up, agreed to teach it as a theory, then taught it as fact. Dishonest AND anti-scientific. No wonder modern atheists so readily identify with him.

The time it would take this engine to get anything up to relativistic speeds is obscenely long. Also factor in that you've got to launch this from Earth, accelerate away, and loop back around to hit anything. This isn't like flicking a switch and getting to 70% of c in a day. Or a year. Or even 10 years. Or even 100.

If we launched a world-destroying death rock today with this engine and gave it a course that allowed it to get up to murdalizing speed by the time it gets back around to us, we'd have centuries to get better tech, catch up, and stop the thing before it was ever a problem.
>>
>>44583374

>>44583231
No, I mean how do particles with mass store the energy they show when they accelerate towards others with mass? Imagine we had only two particles with mass in the universe, which had completely elastic collisions. These particles are traveling towards the other. As they approach one another, they accelerate, so at the point before impact the total velocity of the particles is greater than before collision. The only way to conserve energy here would be to change mass. Do the particles that mediate gravity alter their mass based on the presence of other gravity particles?
>>
>>44583457
Not qualified to answer that, but...

As far as classical physics is concerned, there are no gravitons. The effect of gravity is created by mass distorting the field of space.

As for conservation of energy... Yes? Fuck man, I don't know
>>
>>44583423
Did you not read the second paragraph of my post? The part after "Even... doesn't matter"?

The medieval era was a time of science spear headed by Christians, yes; but is that true now?

Like I said, do we call Islam a religion of science and progress because of the discoveries made in the Islamic golden ages? No, times have changed, and Islam is no longer associated with science. Likewise, Christianity is no longer associated with science, and outside of a few sects (like the Jesuits), it is not made a priority of its members.

see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass%E2%80%93energy_equivalence#Massless_particles_contribute_rest_mass_and_invariant_mass_to_systems

as the relative velocity of a particle increases, its mass increases. which is why you cant get faster than c in a vacuum, it would imply an infinite force, or zero mass.

So we should judge modern atheism/secularism on its own merits? Very well, we'll look at its cultural artifacts since it's became prominent in the last century. My claims about your intellectual dishonesty regarding history stand, and this is all too common among atheists. Unless you are omniscient, this will inevitably create intolerance towards differing views. Look at how modern academia treats those who disagree with them on a social level: ostracization, speech codes, "uninviting" controversial figures. Look at the treatment of those within the scientific community who challenge anthropogenic climate change; the science, we are told, is "settled," there is a "consensus," and we need only look at who's funding the opposition's research to see that their models MUST be wrong. Is this the cultural foundation of scientific progress? You are handed the reins of society, and you become the very thing you decry. Substitute "women's rights" for "measured differences in capability across racial groups," and suddenly you become a more affluent, less violent version of Radical Islamists. The lack of tolerance for those who disagree with you is identical.

That brings us back to the original argument. If moral constraints offered by organized religion are a social good at the individual level, then why wouldn't they be a social good when determining how to responsibly guide the ethics of science? This 'mass' as you speak of it is referred to as a relativistic mass, and is really more of a way of describing the asymptotic approach of energy required as velocity approaches c. From an outside point of view, it is convenient to say the mass of the particle has increased. However, E = mc^2 only holds true for (relatively) small velocities, under .10c. Otherwise the true expression is E = mc^2 * l where l is the Lorentz transformation.

It's far more plausible that nothing exceeded the speed of light but rather space was warped so that the length of space-time the laser traveled through was shorter than we'd classically want to believe.

Expanding and contracting space is afterall not a controversial theory, we know it happens and measure it all the time, it's basically what gravity does.

I doubt anything terribly non-classical is going on here, that is to say I don't think any kind of quantum strangeness is going on.

When the Alcubierre-driven ship decelerates from superluminal speed, the particles its bubble has gathered are released in energetic outbursts. In the case of forward-facing particles the outburst can be very energetic — enough to destroy anyone at the destination directly in front of the ship.

“Any people at the destination,” the team’s paper concludes, “would be gamma ray and high energy particle blasted into oblivion due to the extreme blueshifts for [forward] region particles.”

How about you come to a stop facing away from your destination, then turn to face it? Blast goes off into space - arrive at destination without harming it.
>>
>>44593868

I know its all speculation. But this seems unlikely.

If we can bend space-time for superluminal speeds, we shouldn't assume that we're necessarily just transiting 3d space like a line drawn on a sheet of paper. If there is less interaction with particles on the 3d plane, then why would they be necessarily blue shifted to that extreme.

Interesting thought about this, have we ever observed particles extremely blue shifted like this out in the universe?

Harold White talking about his experiments with the warp bubble technology
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wokn7crjBbA

I made a long ass post and accidentally dealeted it, so I'll keep this one short.

The EMdrive generates a region of negative energy inside the cone, with the ring of EM fields generating a positive net force perpendicular to the ring. This is literally the typical sci-fi propulsion method. Whenever you see ships with glowing rings as sublight exhausts, that's exactly what an EMdrive is.

Now, the reason why we can develop a warp drive from this, is because we didn't know how to generate regions of negative energy before. One of the requirements of the Alcubierre drive to work, is regions of negative energy. Previously though impossible to produce, people imagined "exotic matter" as generating fields of negative energy. Now that we know how to generate regions of negative energy, we can satisfy the equation and make a REAL WORKING warp drive.

Harold White is currently trying to produce warp bubbles as proof of theory. Undoubtedly after this discovery of the EM drive working, this will speed up his research immensley.
At this rate, we will be generating reliable warp fields in under a decade... actual warp drive in about 50 years maybe.

We Galactic Civilization nao.

>We
Weird, your flag doesn't look American.
>>
>>44595592
Actually, he is right.

Because of the nature of a warp bubble, Hawking radiation will be produced both inside and outside the rim of the field. The edge of the bubble acts like the event horizon of a black hole, separating particle pairs. What will happen is particles will begin to "full up" inside the warp bubble, frying everything inside unless there is some kind of shielding or offset. Once the warp field collapses (you stop) all of this radiation (of which there is an immense amount) will essentially eject in every direction like a mini supernova, likely causing immense damage to the region of space that you stop.
>>
>>44595806
The chinese invented the working EMdrive, a mexican made the alcubierre equation and Brits designed the toroidal mesh in which the warp field would be generated.

Get rekt.
>>
Here's the thing. When traveling at light speed time passes much slower.

So, if we were to launch a craft to explore some distant part of the universe, earth would likely be nothing like it was when the craft returned. Possibly hundreds of years would pass for us while waiting on the return of the craft. The program and anyone involved would be long gone. Hell, the country and its people would be gone.

It sucks but unless you are that ship, you will never know what's out there.

>The drive seems to be able to emit EM radiation to produce a small amount of momentum. That's all that's been confirmed so far.

Isn't this what we've been doing with Ion drives already?

The big advantage is being able to travel in space using minimal fuel (since getting fuel into space is costly), but the problem is that the drives are slow as shit and while you can accelerate as long as you have fuel, it still takes years to build up speeds we get just by slingshotting.

>When the Alcubierre-driven ship decelerates from superluminal speed

the whole point of a warp bubble is that the ship remains stationary and moves space around it, there would be no release of energy upon it slowing or stopping and no chance of it 'gathering' particles
>>
The concept of an EmDrive engine is relatively simple. It provides thrust to a spacecraft by bouncing microwaves around in a closed container.

Solar energy provides the electricity to power the microwaves, which means that no propellant is needed.

However this means very little in the space community, it needs to be peer reviewed and taken seriously before any progress can be made.

It could take years if not a decade. Sorry fellas.
>>

That journalists are somewhat exaggerating the facts. Again.

Emdrive and warpdrive aren't the same thing. Emdrive has been tested (in a vacuum - there were doubts that it would work in a vacuum) and encouraging results were found. Now, it needs to be tested in space and at higher energy levels. Currently, 2500 watts of electricity provides provides about .016 pounds foot of thrust. A measurable but small amount.

Chinese scientists have claimed similar results, so the experiment can be said to have been replicated.

Warp drive/fields is being experimented with but I don't think there have been tangible results observed yet. Again, this is being done by NASA. Look up Alcubierre on google or wiki. Same for Emdrive, wiki has an article.

It's all rather exciting, don't you think?

m8 Newtonian physics have been discredited now for over a century.
We still use them because they are excellent simplified approximations.

Using the true formulas all the time would be cumbersome and they converge to the same as Newtonian equations for speeds we commonly encounter on earth.

You have no idea how advanced physics is now.
Quite a few things i have difficulty accepting but the evidence is clear.

>>44579994
umm dude space doesn't actually "freeze" stuff
space has no heat true
but it also doesn't have material to suck out heat from stuff
in space the only way you loose heat is by radiating it (an extremely INEFFICIENT way to loose heat) meaning something that can produce its own heat to sustain itself on its own will have no problems in space
the biggest problem would actually be dispersing the heat produced
