See, what people will do is they will try and patent something as broadly as possible based on what they think may work in the future. The idea is that when someone comes along that can actually make something work that is related you 'own' it through your patent. No, not it's not. You think that getting a patent is some kind of holy grail reserved for ground-breaking inventions. The truth is, there are millions of patents out there, and anyone can get a patent, it's fucking easy to do.

Patent clerks don't check anything to make sure your design works or even makes coherent sense. It literally is just you pay a fine, they file it away, and it means absolutely nothing unless brought up in a patent court where a judge can decide if your patent is even valid or not.
