Person who has been involved in the Furry and MLP community here.

Not every furry wears a fursuit. Not every furry views it as a sexual thing either, hard as it is for many to believe. People get involved for various reasons, and the level to which they get involved is highly variable.

But you wanted a more definitive answer so I'll give you one: It's an escape.

When a person is in a fursuit, or when they adopt a fursona and roleplay with others over the internet, they are able to indulge in a fantasy. They are able to not be themselves for a while. This is the same for any person who adopts a different identity, furries are just a popular and very alien breed.

Why human-like animals, though? My theory is that animals are generally very easy to love. People hardly react to seeing humans get killed on tv, but a puppy? They cringe. Every human loves a cute animal, and unconsciously many furries know this. They want to be seen as cute and lovable, but still human enough so they can relate. So they decide to pretend they are a mix between the two: an anthropomorphic animal.

But then again, many people just like it because they find the concept interesting. Just the same way people find science fiction or fantasy interesting.

However, some people take the escape and try to make it a part of their real-world identity. They want their fantasy to be real, and in a self-deluded state of mind they make it the sole part of their identity. Some people do this because they believe there's no way anyone else will love them if they don't wear their mask of fur. And judging by how many of these people look physically, I'd say they're probably right.

But really, are they more deserving of your hate than all the other people who base their identity on their method of escape? Like people who make playing video games or using drugs part of who they are?

In the end they're just another type of person looking for comfort in a cold, uncaring world.
