The sad thing about Picasso is, if you look at the sketches he did in his youth, you can see he could have become a talented traditional artist.
Instead he rode the wave of modernism.

Modern Art is a giant scam. It allows try hard wanna be intellectuals to amsturbate over their own cleverness while pointing that finger at any Pleb who has the gall to point out that the Emperor has no clothes.
Another sign of the collapse of Western Culture
>>34847604
Indeed. It is the natural way things go I suppose. Painting is an art that has been perfected for a long time now. The only possible change is downwards now.
Are we fine with Beksi?ski?

Fuckin hell! The shading in that paining! Fantastic stuff. The Italian renaissance was truly one of the highest points in Western culture

Technically they are fine, but the theme is rather grotesque in way not too dissimilar from Picasso and other modern painters. Too grim and dark for my taste.

A question for those with more knowledge of painting: what country could be seen as "best" when it comes to painting? Who perfected the art of oil painting as we discuss here?
Personally I would say that Italians have perfected sculpture and they are definitely a strong contender for painting as well, in my opinion.
>>34847982
Well, I personally like his work, because it's both surrealist and modern, and doesn't look like some scribbles like most modern art. Kind of shows what modern art could be if artists actually put some effort into their work instead of just circlejerking.

O sultan, Turkish devil and damned devil's kith and kin, secretary to Lucifer himself. What the devil kind of knight are you, that can't slay a hedgehog with your naked arse? The devil excretes, and your army eats. You will not, you son of a bitch, make subjects of Christian sons; we've no fear of your army, by land and by sea we will battle with thee, fuck your mother.
You Babylonian scullion, Macedonian wheelwright, brewer of Jerusalem, goat-fucker of Alexandria, swineherd of Greater and Lesser Egypt, pig of Armenia, Podolian thief, catamite of Tartary, hangman of Kamyanets, and fool of all the world and underworld, an idiot before God, grandson of the Serpent, and the crick in our dick. Pig's snout, mare's arse, slaughterhouse cur, unchristened brow, screw your own mother!
So the Zaporozhians declare, you lowlife. You won't even be herding pigs for the Christians. Now we'll conclude, for we don't know the date and don't own a calendar; the moon's in the sky, the year with the Lord, the day's the same over here as it is over there; for this kiss our arse!

Whilst the art of ancient Egypt was very simplistic, in technique, it is quite beautiful.
For those interested in art and how it has changed throughout history and in different cultures I could actually recommend reading "Decline of the West" by Oswald Spengler.
It is quite heavy reading and not entirely focused on art, but large parts of it are dedicated to comparing art from different periods in different cultures and see similarities/differences.
One example is how depth and infinity are concepts that have defined the modern, western civilization. In paintings this is quite easy to see when the main object often isn't what you can see or what is happening.
This specific painting is a good example. The man in the foreground is in many ways just a person representing the observer: you.
The main objective is the wast landscape of fog and mountains. Then there's the horizon and the sky. Truly infinite in it's way.

According to Spengler there is nothing that awakens such longing in western men as looking for the horizon. Yearning for infinity is what defines our entire civilization and has done so for almost a thousand years now.
>>34851648
good question. It is 0:30 so I am a little tired.
I try to explain myself.
Yes the material is cold but that just intesivies the bases feeling. Which is depressing (especially the snadclockdude). And one of the major problems of modern art ist that it is almost allways showing in my opinion how very depressing the world is.
I don't need art to do that for me. I know the world is a total fubar place all for itself.
So I see the skill of the artist but I dislike his message.
Is this too "new"?

>>34852002
I know.
In a way that is just a more degenerate form of "the hunt for infinity". Becoming a social superstar is essentially a form of immortality, infinite life.
But all civilizations have their end. Ours is about to enter the last part of a cycle that takes about 1000 years.
Compared to the ancient "classical" Greco-Roman civilization we are somewhere before the fall of the Republic now. A time of corruption and decay of the ancient values. Disorder will grow until we see the rise of Caesarism and centuries of warfare where people follow charismatic leaders in a hope that someone can bring order to society.
This won't happen as no man can save something from death, and a collection of individuals like a civilization is a very living thing.
Recognize me?

I'm not quite sure I follow. I would just like to point out that the survival of Rome as an political entity means that "Rome" wasn't dead.
I would compare this with China. China has been conquered by enemies from the outside a few times in history. However this didn't mean an end to China. The nomads who conquered them became the new upper-class and essentially was absorbed by their new country. China was culturally powerful enough that they could endure military defeat.
Rome was similar in many ways that the barbarians weren't always interested in just destroying Rome. They wanted to BE Romans, the highest standing of all empires in the world.
The west has never really conquered China in it's entirety through military force. We killed China's ancient culture and traditions that in different ways had lasted for millenniums. Through the ideas of liberalism and later marxism we destroyed the ancient empire and created a communistic society in a part of the world that never would have been able to come with the concept on its own.

shit thats one deep show, i keep discovering stuff about it.
>>34853034
>>34852970
Haha no problem. It IS late for us Yurofags.
The problem is that the leadculture lost its quality. The barbarians wanted to be Romans that is true, that is why they got citizenship just after 20 years of military service (well until the constitutio antoniana, that stuff just fucked up). But at some point the invading barbarians just wanted the land without the culture. To be (west)Roman has lost its appeal.
China succeded in that they allways have had the appeal left. But their society was totally fixed by stability. In such a way that Spengler used said that they "turned to stone".
At the end the old chinese cultre destroyed itself to be replaced by modern china (like the roman republic was replaced by the roman empire).

I don't know if the Roman empire is comparable to modern China. According to Spengler's cyclical theory the later stages are mostly a twisted and extreme version of its 'leitmotif' (socialism is the end of the west, incidentally).
The modern state of China has in every relevant way been cut off from the celestial empire it was a little over a hundred years ago.
Imagine this is it's time.
>>34853895
Sorry but that wasn't my intent. I compare the later roman empire with us.
And I compared china and rom in that way, that they both became something different after a bloody period.
My brain goes now into standby mode and I don't think I can reason very well anymore

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: — Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert... Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
‚My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!‘
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
