My great-grandmother left my grandfather with her parents for most of his childhood, and the rest of it he was at boarding school (from the age of seven onwards). This was back in the 1910s. Granted, she was a pretty shitty mother even by the standards of the time, but you'd be surprised how common it was across all social classes to dump your kids on someone else - nannies and boarding schools if you were rich, if you were poor then it'd be relatives and paid 'baby farmers' (I shit you not, that was what they actually called them).

It was only towards the mid 20th century when improving economic conditions created a prosperous middle class that "traditional" motherhood became the norm (since the middle classes weren't wealthy enough to have full-time nannies, but were prosperous enough afford to support a stay-at-home mother and didn't experience the economic deprivations that often forced children to be sent to live with relatives in previous times).

This was always a problem though. It used to be settled by shotgun wedding (forcing the man to marry the slutty daughter), back alley abortions to avoid shaming the family, or having the girl drop out of school, hide for much of the year, and then welcome a new "sister" to her parents family.

In the bible the shotgun wedding came in the form of a bride price of 50 shekels for damaging the fathers merchandise and the man who committed it was now responsible for the girl and she had to become his wife (even in the case of rape).

Teen pregnancies are actually on the decline due to sex education/access to birth control and it is much less common now than it was in the 1950s. There were always sluts and always men eager to take advantage of them.
