What kind of paper do you guys use?

I have made my own paper once, just for the sake of having done it. I normally just use plain old 8.5 x 11" printer paper

This is the first paper i bought.

Came in two sizes:
5 7/8 and 7 inches
15 and 17.8 cm

I also got this foil paper

I have noticed that it is very different using foil paper

The way it folds is a different sensation than regular paper

It's less forgiving if you make a mistake

3.5 inch squares
8.8 cm

This paper is very soft, almost like cloth

It's doesn't hold a crease well which makes it hard to fold properly

But it's beautiful paper and has a nice texture and feel to it

I would estimate the size as 5 7/8 inches or 15 cm

One thing to note, only a couple of sheets were shiny or laminated like this one

The rest of the paper doesn't have a finish like the red sheet i used here
>>
>>549209
Also didn't want to be misleading here, the paper isn't as shiny as the picture makes it out to be, pretty standard paper with a few foil sheets and a few shiny ones
>>
>>549210
it's a godsend when you're trying to get ten layers of paper to stay in place, though

I use pretty much anything except for the "super-cheap gift wrapping cut into squares" origami paper, it's impossible to fold anything marginally complex with that
>>
>>548522

Wax paper.
>>
New guy here, what weight or thickness do you guys use?
I'd imagine 300 GSM (card) would be too thick and 80 GSM (printer paper) would be too thin

Anyone?
>>
>>549323
it depends on what you want to make. But for origami 80gsm printer paper is fine to start with. Then you'll probably want thinner paper like kraft paper.
>>
>>549324
What about papercraft though
>>
>>549326
for papercraft you want to use cardstock with heavy gsm (in the 150-250 gsm range) but still fairly thin if possible. You can find this kind of stuff in any art store usually.

Interesting.

I haven't tried to fold multiple sheets yet, but i see how it would help to hold everything together.

But it does seem unforgiving in that it ceases in a different way.

Anyone managed to find some more sophisticated paper to be used? I often see youtube videos where people have all those wonderful colors and textures of papers, pic fucking related.

Seriously, where can I buy paper like that? I can pay 20$ for a few dozen 8" squares, but all i ever find is some retarded patterns with stars or trees and shit. Sometimes you can also find a stupid rainbow of colors, 5 sheets each, but in my case i would use half of it all at most, since run out of green too fast. (i mostly do flowers)

The author of pic related said in the description that she uses washi paper, but I could not find this kind of paper in the stores i checked. I'm assuming i won't find it on ebay or amazon though.

Thoughts?
>>
Has anyone folded with vellum? I'm curious to try since I have a couple of sheets.

>>549379
If you're looking for washi paper, there's so many types (weights, color, etc) and they might not be squared so you would have to cut it yourself. In Canada, there's Japanese Paper Place based in Ontario, and resellers for that company. I'm not aware of the US based paper companies with washi papers though, though I think ones with colored light-medium weight mulberry papers would do just fine.
>>
>>549379
Have you checked your local Micheals? Also, theres some washi paper on amazon heres an example https://www.amazon.com/Washi-Style-Origami-Paper-sheets/dp/B001EHA5M6
>>
>>549388
>https://www.amazon.com/Washi-Style-Origami-Paper-sheets/dp/B001EHA5M6
Let's be honest, at that price and those prints, they are the very cheap filmy kind of origami paper. Wouldn't even call it washi.

If anyone wants pretty patterns and quality, look for yuzen/chiyogami paper that are priced at least $15+, probably find a small pack of 10cmx10cm for $8 but I find that size and weight a bit awkward to fold intricate stuff.
>>
>>549379
If you live in a big(-ish) city there's a high chance that you have a good art store around you, they sometimes have some asian paper that are well suited for origami like Unryu or lokta paper, or maybe some elephant hide like paper.

This might not be true everywhere but from what i have seen you want to avoid almost anything that's marketed as origami paper because it's only ridiculous 15cm square kami with stupid paterns on it. The lokta/unryu/elephant hide (ie real advanced origami paper) are in the "art paper" section.

Also buy MC, try double tissue and be amazed.
>>
>>549379
I know this sounds odd, but very often you can find origami paper at a toy store.

>Also just search Amazon

Living in poland is suffering. There are a few little "Japan stuff" shops, but those that sell origami paper have only a few items, kami with some random patterns like you said. The art paper sections of "creative" shops are 99% scrapbooking, so more stupid patterns ensue.

I asked the author of the >>549379 pic about the shop where she bought the paper, she replied saying it's form Daiso. Alas, the only washi paper I found on Daiso online shop was this:
http://www.daisojapan.com/c-133-papers.aspx

I think I'll give some other paper a try, before i import something that splits my bank account in half. Like pic related

What do you mean, MC? with double tissue?
>>
>>549398
Very neat. Where did you get them?
>>
>>549400

MC is methyl cellulose - It's just a certain type of glue. You can get it in some art stores or online. It comes as a powder you mix with water. Most of the time people use it to size (as in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sizing) certain kinds of paper so that they can wet-fold and shape it effectively.

You can also wet-fold directly with the MC, but I don't really like doing that. I prefer just using watered down PVA glue since it dries way faster.

Double tissue is great. Pretty much just using MC to glue sheets of regular tissue paper together to make it a little thicker and more receptive for shaping and stuff. It's really nice to fold with and winds up being really cheap compared to most of the other real options for complex origami.

If you want to make double tissue, here's what I do:
- Get a big piece of glass. I use an old mirror
- Put a piece of tissue paper on it, spray it lightly with water, smoothing out as many wrinkles as you can as it expands.
- Lightly spray another piece of tissue paper so it expands.
- Put that piece of paper down over the other one, avoiding all the wrinkles you can
- Paint the whole thing with lots of MC
- Once it's dry, peel it off carefully.

screnshot and saved, thanks
>>
>>549403
>>549400

you can also use any window of your house instead of a miror, but the gravity will makes things a little harder.

One technique i like to use is to wrap (tightly !!) the second sheet of paper around a cylinder and then unwraping it over the first (already wet) sheet. If the wraping is tight and if you apply a good amount of pressure while unwraping it there will be almost no wrinkles.
Fun fact : MC is used litterally everywhere. In glue for wallpaper, il milkshakes to make them more viscous, and even in porn to make false cum. So great stuff !

I have a lot of sorts of paper. Lokta, unryu, tissue, tant, kraft etc...

I can find lokta, tissue and unryu in the art stores of my city so there is not much point to buy on origami shop. However i really like to use their "gold foil rollers backed" backed with some tissue paper, it makes a really good paper for test fold and if the test fold is a succes you still end up with a pretty good looking model.

Recently i tried double tissue (bound with methyl cellulose) and this is the best and cheapest paper i have seen (though not the prettiest).

I also bought a paper called "elephant skin" the other day, i don't know if it's real elephant hide but i can try wet folding now.

Pic related is 3 sheets of lokta and the sheet of "elephant skin".

Figure this might be a good place to ask this:

I really like folding with the European style of kraft paper (the kind with the little ribs, pic attached) for practice stuff. I'm in the US though, and pretty much all of the kraft paper I can buy is that unsized grocery store bag kind of thing. They used to sell the kind I like as wrapping paper at Ikea, but I think they stopped doing that.

Does anyone know a place I can buy the european kind? I've found places online that look like they sell it, but its all in super crazy bulk amounts.
