Pirate FL studio or Ableton and start learning. Ambient stuff is one of the easiest things to make, just add a bunch of reverb, find some nice pads, low pass almost everything, add some foley sounds and people talking and call it a day. You barely have to know any theory to make something "good for a general public".

P.S. - of course it's not as trivial as it sounds, but still pretty easy.
