Hi there /p/,
I am normally a patron of /o/ and am planning on taking a trip to Japan this fall. I am looking for a good point and shoot I can use for the trip.
Normally I am on my phone and it is ok. Last year my phone corrupted about 1/2 the pictures I took when I was in Aus.
I want to invest in a good Point and Shoot camera for my trips that I take and have narrowed it down to either the Sony RX100 or the Ricoh GR II. Both seem to be favorites of the internet. My main goal is to have a camera I can just pull out of the box with minimal tweaking and have some good quality pictures of like cars, city stuff, and landscapes.
Everything I can find doesn't really seem to narrow down the choice just that everyone likes these two cameras. Some also have the Powershot G7 X Mk2 as a favorite. What would you recommend without spending $600 for something portable that works out of the box. Would even an entry level mirror-less be worth it?
>tl;dr what is the best point and shoot for casual travel shots and pics of cars for under $600.00 US

>casual travel shots
totally the GR II
>pics of cars
GR maybe is too wide for this
anyhow, GR all the way my dude. also beware of the incoming autism in this thread.

If all you need is portability than go with the gr ii, also the sony a6000 can be fitted with some small lenses too and can be had for good deals.
Even though that's my opinion I encourage you to make your own based off reviews and stuff. This place is biased af

Yeah get the GR

GR all the way for convenience and speed

Panasonic LX100. Large-ish sensor, good image quality straight out of camera (no real need to post process if you don't want to), good optics with wide aperture, easy to use controls, fast autofocus, battery lasts a long time, even the video is great, all in a small compact packet. Pretty much nothing can compare in that price range.

I appreciate the feedback, the incoming autism is to be expected. But I appreciate peoples passion and intellect when it comes to this subject.
What do you mean when you say too wide, what part of a camera effects that.
I am really really new to this. So thank you.

Is there a good all around travel lens? That is what scares me about a mirrorless is that i'll never have the right lens on me.
>>3146905
I know that the megapixel meme wars ended a long time ago but is the 13.3 low?
>>3146908
Don't get the LX100, it's not truly pocketable

the lens. every lens has a focal length, sometimes is variable, sometimes its fixed like the one in the GR. GR has a 28mm lens.
i think you need a more flat perspective for car photos, but i might be wrong.

Thank you so much. that answered my question perfectly.
I feel like a retard. I didn't realize that the GR doesn't have a zoom. Kinda seems like I would be comparing apples and oranges.

LX100 shoots 12mpx, that is quite enough unless you want to print wall size. I've printed 40x60cm from 4mpx film scans just fine. GR is pocketable, but it is very niche camera and not very versatile due to the semi wide fixed lens. I don't think it's a good choice for someone just starting out. I own a sony rx100iii and I kind of hate it... It's not much smaller than the lx100 which I also own, yet the image quality is worse and the controls are absolute shit, the thing is slippery as fuack, so you need a grip that makes it larger. Now sony a6000 could be an option, but again it's larger and more expensive, and the cheap zoom lenses for it are not that great. You should go and check them out in a store if you can.

np. now, ive got the perfect answer for you: the canon s120. super small, easy and fast to use, has zoom, has pretty good image quality, can record videos too, has RAW capabilities, and outputs 12MP files enough for anything you need. check it out.
/o/ and GR owner here.
I love the GR but I think its too much of a hobbyist/specialist camera, which leaves it lacking in many areas
In my opinion the RX100 is a much better general purpose travel, video, and car fotoing camera.

>Go on holiday recently
>Take 18mm and 35mm with me
>Always told myself I found 18mm too wide for practical use
>Don't even take the 35mm out of my bag for 90% of the trip
>start keeping an eye on GR prices again

I sold my last compact to help fund my motorcycle. Wouldn't mind picking up a GR if I find one for a decent price.
I bought an RX100-3 in Japan last month. It's good for snapshits for personal use and social media, but I find it pretty hard to get really good photos out of, especially in low light.

The GR is kind of a special camera in that it's really a point & shoot for photographers. If you've been photographing for a bit it's amazing. If you just want to take some snaps with better quality than your phone and maybe want a zoom, then the GR isn't such a good choice.

I was in Tokyo and itching to buy myself a new camera there, just becos.
Settled for the GR11. Turned out to be a fucking great street camera for that trip.
