Does anyone here use a Holga Digital? You know, the one that was produced through Kickstarter a few years back (2015 i think)?
This camera seems to have been a complete flop. Apparently when it first came out, they made the kickstarter supporters wait a full month after it was released in stores to actually send them their camera. The company did not communicate with the people either, even when they requested refunds after not receiving their camera or from defective models.
The build quality isn't great either, and instead of the listed "glass lens" and "switchable f/2.8 / f/8" aperture, these don't seem to exist on the camera. There is no screen to view the images, and sometimes the cf card apparently doesnt work out of the box and needs to be formatted by the camera itself to be functional.
With that all being said, it sounded fun to me, so I picked one up. It was only $20 at my local Urban Outfitters, down from the original $80. I just couldn't pass that up, however shitty it was and is. I personally like it so far, though I can see why people would be critical if they had to pay full price for this. It's a Holga, though, so what were people honestly really expecting? I do wish that it had an original holga lens in front of the sensor, instead of just an average tiny webcam type lens that it does. Either way, its shitty.
Does anyone out there own/use this camera regularly? Do you have thoughts about it other than the ones already out there? I am interested in hearing about ways to make this camera functional and easier to use. I would really like to know what is up with the sunny/cloudy setting. It seems to change the white balance, but it doesn't seem to change the shutter speed or aperture exactly. I also really want to know if anyone has experiences with using a flash with this, as I always seem to get totally blown out photographs, even with cheap, light duty flashes.
Pic semi-related
I'll post some things I have shot so far.
It seems to have a fairly long lag between when you click the shutter and when it takes the image, leading to rolling shutter and blur. I find these accidents sometimes really interesting, but usually if I dont stand still for a while its just a blurry mess.
This makes me appreciate that this is digital though, because if you take 300 pictures in a day, you will likely wind up with at least a handful that are interesting like this it seems.

Alright.
It seems to be fairly sharp in bright sun, though I do notice that sometimes it can expose completely incorrectly and give me really dark shadows, or it can wind up really flat. I suppose it has some sort of simple meter system that it then uses to calculate the true shutter speed/aperture (I am under the impression that its just shutter speed it fucks with, though)

wheres the trademark vignetting and swirly shit on the corners?
fucking holga.
I thought this option was kind of interesting too - there is a knob that changes the aspect from 1:1 to 4:3. Obviously, the camera just crops the 4:3, but theres something kind of off when I go and crop it by myself. The 4:3 ratio retains the vignetting, though to me it feels far less...I dont know, natural? Than the real-deal (see Al Gore at the top there). Theres something kind of digital about the vignette. Still though - a tactile knob to change aspects is kind of interesting. There is also a color/black and white switch on this thing. Not a big fan of the color.

I read that apparently this company who produced these digital holgas is NOT the actual Chinese manufacturer of the original Holga. I believe that the company that made this was relatively new and just got licenses to use the name and design, but I am just kind of guessing there. I recall that the Holga was going to be taken out of production/the company went under or something, but I am not too sure.
These guys definitely seem to be different though - as the website is different too.

I got jewed on this.
The actual Holga is great. It's a fun camera that weight nothing, and you can get great stuff out of it if you know what you're doing.
The digital Holga thing is just one of those grocery store keychain cameras in a bigger housing. There's a delay between shutter press and the actual picture being taken, and the viewfinder is near useless. None of the characteristics that make the Holga fun are present. At least it doesn't melt into a puddle of plastic in a hot car like the real thing.

I agree with this partially. I do think it is very close to a dollar store keychain type camera, although I do think it is a little bit better than that. The hot shoe is what set it a little higher in my opinion, along with the acceptance of WiFi enabled SD (or an SD car alone, for that matter). The lag can be dealt with if you just kind of keep still for a bit, which I agree is bullshit, but its something you can work around. Its kind of a fun constraint IMO.
I would have absolutely been pissed if I payed 80 bucks for this, but I think 20 bucks was exactly what it should have been in the first place. This is absolutely a 20 dollar camera. I urge everyone who sees this to go to Urban Outfitters and buy one because I guarantee that they are selling them for 20 bucks probably everywhere since nobody is really buying them.
The argument is usually that theres no real "place" for this camera to fit into. My thinking is this:
Yes, its got a lot of problems, but I just cannot justify very easily putting roll after roll of 120 film through a Holga when nearly all of the stuff comes out kind of lackluster. Once in a hundred you get a gem of photograph, but then you are already, what, ten rolls in? The time it takes to develop when you know your images are going to mostly be over or under exposed and blurry just seems like a waste too, in my (really negative, I know) opinion.
I almost always shoot with film myself, and i love film and can see the beauty in Holga images, but it just seems like putting a roll of 120 though a Yashica would be better than putting it through a Holga at what it costs to do it. If this were 1981-2005 id probably be more willing - when film was abundant and cost far less.
Yeah not into the color photos from this thing though

>I do wish that it had an original holga lens in front of the sensor, instead of just an average tiny webcam type lens that it does.
No you don't. The original holga lens is a 60mm, which would make it an extreme telephoto on the tiny sensor in the digital holga (on the order of 400mm equivalent)
>>3146374
Good point, I hadn't thought of that really. Makes sense as to why they wouldn't at least try to use the lenses if they already had the body shape. In reality though I'm sure they'd never do that anyways because it's really just a web/spy cam on a pcb with a code that runs when you press a button. No way you could even adapt a lens likely I suppose.
I have a chinese $12 gopro that labels images with sunplus. Probably the same shit sensor.
>>3146343
This one is pretty good.
>>3146401
Probably is. Its definitely a Chinese small camera lens manufacturer. They seem to make spy cameras that look like alarm clocks from what I looked up from the EXIF info.

That fake vignetting is so obviously baked on that it hurts. Nothing like the real deal.
