Hey hey, got a quick question.

Wanting to get a camera to film the stars.

Love space.

Nikon P900, or Nikon L34?

L34 is higher rez, P900 has better zoom.

Which camera should I get to view the stars?

Give explanations please.

Thanks :)

P900 is $600
L34 is $200

To film the stars you need as large a sensor as possible and lens with the widest aperture. And not canon. Photography low light performance is all about how much light your camera can gather, a full frame camera like the sony a7 has a sensor with approximately 30 times greater surface area than the p900. And not canon, as their low light performance is well behind sony, who make every other sensor for every other brand pretty much.

Look at sony a7 range, nikon d750, d610, d800, d810, pentax k1, etc.

Then for lens, you want something wide and fast, 35mm or wider and f2 or faster. A wide lens will allow a longer shutter speed without the stars turning into streaks, longer shutter = more light gathered. A faster lens will let in more light at once.

You will also need a sturdy af tripod and a vehicle with plenty of petrol to reach dark sky areas.

Good luck!

Thanks!

I see many people on youtube using P900's to film planets and stars.

Here is one such video.

Saw a few L340 videos too and they look similar.

Just wondering if the p900 is worth that extra cash opposed to the L340...

Here are specs.

What's better? :)

bamp

Someone plz look at the specs and inform me which is best :)

Light gathered is per unit area, not total surface area. A lens spits out the same image out the back and onto a sensor, no matter how big that sensor is.

You do however want a camera with a large sensor because it will have better high ISO performance

So, which camera would you people buy to zoom in on planets and stars?

The L340 for $250.
The P900 for $600.

No.

The intensity of light is determined by the lens' t value. Let's call it x lumens/sq mm. The more sq mm you have, the larger the signal you are recording, the greater the signal to noise ratio.

Photography is just basic physics, if you don't understand gain and signal to noise ratio, read up on it first.

You better really love shooting stars and shit or else youre investing a lot for maybe somethinf youll do a lot the first month then youll taper off until you build a love for photography.

That said, L340.

>zoom in on planets and stars?

Zooming in on stars is pointless.
They appear as single specs of light even with the most powerful telescope.
What you can do is zoom in on galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, etc.
They can be quite big, but also quite dim so you're way better off using a telescope.

Planets can be zoomed in on.
But don't expect any miracles - you'll be severely limited by the earth's atmosphere.
They are very tiny but quite bright.
Again, you're best off using a telescope. - maybe film through the eyepiece with a webcam or just your phone.
To get a decent image you'll want to stack hundreds or thousands of images (or movie frames).

Light GATHERED is determined by the size of the front element.
The lens and sensor can waste some of it, but they can never add more light.

Note that telescopes are designated by the size of their front element or primary mirror.
F-stops and t-stops mean very little to astro-photographers.
You probably do want a large sensor, but for cooling purposes.

>top of the line compact series purpose built super zoom model with highest end tech, mindblowing vibration reduction, and great image quality (for a compact)
If you need to ask then L34 is all for deserve.
