The Royal National Theatre, the organisation, was founded in 1963. It was originally based in the Old Vic. The present building is from the 70s.

The best way to fight the fear is to be aware of it: keep your eyes peeled to any suspect activity, learn to set up you camera quick for each shot, and just go to places you know at least a little bit of what is surrounding you. Don't bring unecessary gear, just your camera and an extra lens if you have/need one. Act confident, and most of all, dont look like you dont know what you're doing there.
