Asked in another thread.

what are your thoughts on the Sony Sel 30M35 30mm f3.5 Macro as a starting macro lens for an a6300 shooter? I know Sony has a 1000 dollar macro lens that is likely better faster sharper but I'm just looking to get stsrted with Macro.

Thoughts?

I'm waiting to see what the rumored fuji xe3 will be like, and wether to upgrade my xt1 to that or xt2... Also I'll probably swap my 23/1.4 to 23/2, 35/1.4 to 50/2 and 18-135 to 55-200 at the same time.

In some point I'll get a used sony a7ii just to muck around. Yeah I like my gear.

I don't really use the panny 25 mm but it is cheap and has auto focus and comes with a hood. The olympus 45 mm is about even with the pansonic one. Like the Pany leica 42.5mm f/1.2, Voigtlander 42.5mm f/0.95 and olympus 75mm f/1.8 are all a lot better, the olympus 45 f/1.8 is cheap as fuck and small. I will take it over the 75mm some times just because of how much smaller it is. Bad part about it is with the DoF on m43 it is like shooting a 90mm at f 3.6 so you have to be a bit closer if you want that bokah

Got to use the 24-70 f4 for a week, and obviously own the 24-105. Both are excellent lenses as far as I'm concerned. Fast, sharp, nice bokeh, IS is neat. Bulky and heavy however. Steep price tag but I got mine second hand.

No experience with the f2.8. May buy the Tamron equivalent at some point, very similar performance for half the price.

That surprises me. There's field curvature, focus shift, soft corners and even generally soft centers on both ends, heavy vignetting on the tele end, barrel distortion on the wide end. Also the 24-105 II seems like no improvement over the mk I. Even the sigma art 2470 and 24-105 were left behind their expectations. Only the 24-70 f/2.8L II has no major flaws beside it's value for money.

>deciding between D3300 and D5300
Do you want a flippy screen or not, that's basically what it boils down to. 5300 also has bracketing and more AF-points, but thats more "nice to have" than anything essential.
>>
I'm deciding between the nikon 35mm 1.8G ED (full frame) and the tame on 35mm 1.8 Di for something a little wider than the 50

I'm not sure which route to go though, the nikon is smaller and lighter which is nice for general walkaround but the tamron is better built, has VRwhich would be nice at night, and slightly better IQ

Anyone have experience with these 2 lenses?
>>
>>3131680
It's kind of an apples to oranges situation with any other camera I have. I also have an Olympus XA2 which I forgot to list, and it's basically the digital version of that. You trade a viewfinder for the flip-out screen, which just means going from eye level to waist level shooting for me, which is just different, not better or worse. Otherwise the focal length is a little more constructive, 28mm is quite wide for me, I end up cropping a lot often.

Hard to say if it's really lacking anything, as I said it's just a different experience. It's just a good everyday carry, a treat.

Does Nikon require lens manufacturers to omit the aperture ring on all new lenses?

Seems like they are really going by the wayside. I know Nikon themselves doesn't bother with them any longer.
>>
>>3131715

I was shooting with a 5D Mk III for a while but a couple of days ago it went kaputz on me due to some corrosion build up on the inside. During my downtime I got some thinking done and figured that instead of dishing out money on repairs I might as well just switch over to Nikon. Their D810 has a whopping 14.8 stops of dynamic range compared to Canon's wimpy 11.7 on the Mk III. Some other perks are a base ISO of 64 and 36MP resolution which I find to be a good in between from the 5D Mk III's 22 and the 5Ds series 50MP. I won it at an ebay auction paired with the 105 1.4 lens and my grand total was only $2861. Not bad if you ask me. The only other lens I see myself getting is the 11-24 and a cheap 50mm later on just for the shits
>>
>>3131676

>>
>>3131497
if you are a bokehwhore like me then L primes are your new waifu. if you don't care about bokeh then you don't need the red ring just save yourself the money. only red ring zoom i have is the 16-35 and thats to have an easy composition for astro shots due to the 2.8
>>
>>3131688
Unless you really want that flippy screen or gimped controls, I'd suggest a used D7100 over those.
>>
>>3131763
Nikon doesn't require third parties to do anything, in fact I suppose they'd prefer third parties not even make lenses for their mount. Otherwise they'd already released their af system specs.

The aperture ring is not needed with modern nikon camera bodies, yet some brands (like samyang) making full manual lenses still have them. Mainly because they're simple (cheap) to make, compared to nikon automatic aperture control system, and because they can change the mount easily for other cameras.
>>
>>3131769
>autism room
Ah thanks! I couldn't name it before your post. I just saw it's no basement and therefore was confused
>>
>>3131772
Due to more focus on portraits I'm currently switching to third-party primes for better (corner) sharpness which is why I've sold a 24-70 and 70-200 each f/2.8L mark 1 non IS. Sigmas Art 35 and Tamrons VC 85 are already set and I'll keep the 16-35 f/4L IS. Now I'm uncertain in buying a 70-200 2 IS and refuse to spend the big buck yet or didn't find a good offer. So far I just miss Canons quick and reliable af. I'm no bokeh whore btw. Suggestions are welcome

GOD dammit I want to get a full frame camera so damn bad. I have a entry level cropped and it works and suits my needs perfectly fine but I just have to get a freaking FF and a stupid wide angle prime argh

Pros for me:
- better low light performance, I shoot while hiking and it gets somewhat dark in deeper woods.
- wider pics for my landscape shit.

Reasons why I absolutely need a FF camera:
- none really.

And I can't stop lusting over it.
Please send help it's corroding me inside and I've been like this for 3 weeks

I had that lens for my a6000, and thought it was okay at best. It has 1:1, but you have to be right in front of something for you to get there.

DX will be fine, and cheaper, FX will also work, but will cover a fullframe if you ever chose to invest in one

>- Street photography
24mm, will be roughly a 35mm on your body, though some may like it a little wider.

>- Portraits
50-85mm will work, depending on you preferred working distance. You could even use a 35mm and it would look fine, and be a little more versatile. I would shoot for f2 or faster, on any length for this use.

>- Landscapes
entirely depends on what you're shooting, a good sharp zoom with little distortion would be good I think.

>- Micro photography (flowers, bugs, etc)
people seem to like the Tamron/Tokina 90mm Macro's. Could double as a longer portrait lens.

You could probably get by with a 17-50 2.8 for most of this. Wouldn't be super inconspicuous for street, but neither is a D3400 necessarily.

I would look at the focal lengths you use the most for different scenarios, and then buy a lens that improves upon that length. Also keep in mind that with your 1.5x crop sensor, lenses will be a little "longer" than what their focal length says (a 24mm giving the field of view of around 35mm). All of the focal lengths I listed are the actual focal lengths, not the equivalent field of view after crop. One last thing to consider is that the D3xxx line does not have a built in AF motor, so be sure that lenses you purchase have them inside.

There's a few versions of nikon 24-120. The constant aperture f/4 G vr is the best, but quite expensive. Variable aperture 3.5-5.6 G vr is much cheaper but also a lot worse in image quality, though I suspect that it'd be good enough if you're not a pixel peeper. Then there's variable aperture D lens, which is very cheap, but doesn't have vr and the auto focus is screw driven and probably not very fast or accurate, iq again is worse still. Sigma 24-105 f/4 is extremely good, but also very expensive. There's also a whole bunch of other cheap but sort of interesting first and third part options available if you're willing to look for them.

so is the only good way to do low light shots is with a tripod + long exposure or fast lens + bokeh?
>>
>>3132460
It's also *really* good to have a low light camera body like the Sony A7S II, Pentax K-1 or Nikon Df or such.
Such cameras should make it easily possible to use f/2 or even f/2.8 rather than f/1.4 on a random crappy entry-level APS-C. All of them should have videos and photos published that show you what they can do.

Also, IBIS and OIS. People had fun with the nice stabilization resulting from IBIS + OIS on an E-M1 II at night, go search for that.

Basically, you now can often (quite reliably) shoot without a tripod IF you have decent gear.
>>
>>3132460
>>3132474

A long exposure at base ISO using a tripod will always look a lot better, no matter what gear you throw at it.

It's neat when you can capture a handheld image in poor light, but it will always be a snapshit never a keeper.

>>
>>3132662
Rather many people actually use primes as main lenses for their sports and wildlife shots. It's just really quite situational what lens(es) are the better choice.

> are they useful for travel stuff?
Sure, but so are primes. Personally I've been using one 18mm and one 50mm equivalent prime for almost all of my travel photos. Generally am quite happy to just leave with these two.

That may not be the same for you if you like to, for example, shoot birds sitting on trees, buildings, bridge supports. They aren't always the same size and distance, you'd probably need 3-4 primes or more to cover these quite well.

Whereas a 70-200mm f/2.8 is a decent guess for something that will usually work on a FF camera (dunno what's actually good on your Lumix, so I'm just taking a common FF zoom lens choice as an example).

what's a good tripod for a nikon d3300? Can I get by with a sirui t-005x? I think it's meant for mirrorless, but the dx cameras don't seem that big and I'm not using a big telephoto.

Also is carbon fiber worth an extra $100
>>
>>3132688
> Can I get by with a sirui t-005x?
Sure, if you don't mind how relatively low that tripod is even when fully extended. For me, it's a bit too low.

But yea, it should be able to take the D3300 and typical lenses.

> Also is carbon fiber worth an extra $100
A decent travel carbon tripod like a Dic&Mic, QZSD or Zomei or how they're all called *is* around $100 on Aliexpress.

It's generally not worth paying $100 extra on top of that, no, unless you need a fancier tripod head and it's mostly going towards that.

>>
>>3132700
Sirui is Chinese too, and they should be more expensive for virtually all tripods. [They do have a larger lineup though, it'll be a pain to compare them all.]

In general I'd suggest a Dic&Mic E302C (or similar carbon travel tripods by the other brands) as starting point. At 150cm, it's just high enough to shoot over most fences, railings etc. and it's at least semi comfortable to operate for people with a normal body height.

Also has basically all accessories and adjustment options you need in a travel tripod.
>>
>>3132711
Thanks, that dic&mic looks really good. More compact and lighter than the zomei I was looking at. gonna place an order
>>
>>3132714
It's the one I have and I'm still happy with it. Should be just fine.

For discussion's sake: I DO think Zomei has a comparable model with the ... Z699C or something? QZSD also has a 666C or such. And they definitely exist under more brand and model names.

A bunch of them don't have the spiked feet of the Dic&Mic or a spirit level less on the tripod head or such, but they're very close variants of the same thing from all that I can tell.

Currently using an A6000. Thinking about getting a 24-70 2.8, but the G master version is way out of my league. Are there any good third party Canon 24-70 2.8 you guys recommend to be used with an adapter? I'd be fine with a Nikon version too, but the Canon Commlite adapter is so cheap that I might as well go Canon.
>>
>>3132800
Can't really. FF or MF cameras are much better for wide angle shots.

And there isn't much of a reason to use the Fuji 14mm f/1.4 over the much cheaper Samyang 12mm f/2 if you want it cheaper and thus go APS-C.
>>
>>3132895
The A6000 doesn't work nearly as well with the AF adapters as newer models like the A6500 or A7[R/S] II do.

You could do it, but I'd suggest to just use the cheap 16-50 or primes, Or maybe the 16-70 Zeiss.
>>
>>3130935
I take photos as a hobby and am currently transitioning from Nikon dx to fx (with the intention of making the former a supplementary camera for when the situation calls for different focal lengths to avoid swapping lenses back and forth) and currently the widest fx lens I have is a 50mm. Thus, I'm looking to go wider and the options so far are:
—35mm f2. Quite cheap (less than $200 used) and I'll probably end buying it sooner or later anyway, however the versatility is questionable, I don't mind CA at all but it seems to be super soft wide open and even stepped down to 2.8, the bokeh is anything but refined. Most of the flickr photos taken with it are either some sort of blurry street or are stepped down to f11 or tighter, however this could be a side effect of the low price. People do seem to recommend it claiming it has a charming image rendition but I haven't been able to find any worthy examples unfortunately.
—24-85 f3.5-4.5 VR, $250 used. Kind of eh about this one, it's affordable and seems okay at wider angles but otherwise looking at the test shots it's blurry. Everyone seems to recommend it and I can see why they do that as performance/price ratio for it is rather high. All of my zooms (except 150-600) have a constant 2.8 and this feels like a step back though.
—27-70 2.8, $1k used. Obvious but pricy. Not too happy about tightening the belt to purchase but both other option feel like stop-gap solutions compared to this. It's a bit heavy and I won't edc it like I do the 50 but the image rendition and the autofocus (I do get to shoot moving things from time to time, e.g. horce races at sunset from up close) are definitely superior. A bit let down that some lenses exhibit an issue with the zoom ring however.
(Not looking for 3rd party options.)

So it's obvious that I'm biased here, but maybe there's someone here who's had a blast shooting with a 35 f2 or the 24-85 (especially if they've held the 24-70 before) who can advocate for those?
>>

I thought about getting the Samyang 24mm 1.4 for a wider FOV for video, but then I realized if I'm spending $500 on a prime, I could've just spent $1000 on a nice 24-70. I'm also hoping to upgrade to FF in the future. Does it seem like there aren't that many options?
>>
>>3133132
> I thought about getting the Samyang 24mm 1.4 for a wider FOV for video
The 12mm f/2 is worth a look.

> but then I realized if I'm spending $500 on a prime, I could've just spent $1000 on a nice 24-70
50% isn't exactly little, plus prime vs zoom is not generally JUST a matter of zoom, but also sharpness at wider apertures & aperture / t-stoppage as such.

But if you prefer the 24-70, sure, it's perhaps the better option.

> Does it seem like there aren't that many options?
For 24-70mm lenses? No, it's just the a few high-end lenses & it's doubtful Sony or Zeiss would even try to make more low end or midrange zoom lenses. That market segment is pretty uninteresting going forward, and somewhat covered by lenses on adapters (sure, not on the A6000, but that's probably not what they're planning for now).
>>
>>3133153
The 12mm might be too wide for what I need.
Another thing I've noticed is that while I love using primes, sometimes when I'm shooting an event for school, the versatility of a zoom would be amazing because I want to be able to do group photos as well as really isolate people. Maybe I'll try renting the Tamron and getting an AF adapter. Thanks for your help!

It's still "just" a ~90 degrees horizontal field of view on APS-C. Can actually be just enough for larger groups, depending from where you need to shoot (like, inside a classroom perhaps).

But yea, it's not good at doing the other thing, isolating people - it won't even have enough resolution to crop nicely to one person in most situations.

I'm thinking of switching to a smaller camera such as the A7. Its quite heavy when I need to carry my camera along with a laptop.
>>
>>3133942
Then you'd be carrying a truckload of batteries with it tho. And coming from d7100 I'd suspect you'd get frustrated with the so called auto focus feature of the a7.
>>

The difference is equal to 9-10 AA-type batteries. Provided you carry the same lenses (ca. 670g total) or that the new ones will weigh the same (looking up some random Sony fifty it's slightly heavier), the Sony kit will weigh ~20% less. Just a heads-up.
>>
>>3133942

a7 mk1 isn't worth the change really. AF is too slow and lacks ibis.

a7 mkii is worth looking at, but it is pricey and the mkiii releases soon.

It is also worth keeping in mind, that some Sony lenses (especially wider angle lenses) can be considerably lighter.

Oh man well i could buy a car based on an anime... Look at the rx7 for example a fine car. Now is it shit just because it was one of the main characters cars in an anime? Or the mx5 or The r32? Just because i can use m42 glass for free because a relative bought into it do you think i am a cuck or what?
>>
So when is GR III coming out? Right now I am indecisive between GR II and RX100 mk. IV

Drop in GR II price could make my decision easier.
>>
>>3133952
?
There's like 3 small and light sony fe lenses, all others are just as large and heavy as nikon lenses
>>
>>3133992
Wouldn't hold my breath. I doubt they bother to even try to improve the GR, the mkII is basically the same as the first one. Also quite hard to find where I live. RX100 line is not at all comparable in my opinion... Try fuji x70? It's at least available and not that expensive.
>>
>>3134000
Why isnt RX100 comparable? Big plus for Sony was the viewfinder and since x70 doesnt have it I prefere GR II.

Also is Sony's sensor really that tiny compared to APS-C?

>>

rx100 has less than one third of the sensor area of apsc, also the rx100 is p&s with a zoom and a crappy user interface, while gr and x70 have fixed 28mm eqv lens and much better ui... Go test them in a store. My rx100iii has a viewfinder as well but I never use it because it's tiny and crap.

I just got my chinese carbon fiber tripod (q666c) for $60 and it's pretty nice and compact for traveling. The only concern I have is I'm scared of breaking the leg locking mechanism by pulling too hard. Also, it feels really stiff moving the parts around right now, but I assume that it will get loose with wear.

Waiting for my chinese peak design capture clip to come in to see how that works out. Made a paracord wrist strap like in pic that will also function as a backup safety tether in case the capture clip is shit and breaks.

It's a good full frame portrait lens! My father got one and I've compared it a lot to primes and also the 24-70 2.8 I. Image quality is comparable to low budget primes but it's significantly worse compared to good primes. The 24-70 2.8 II, 70-200 2.8 IS II line-up is a good choice when variable focal length is required or budget limits the expense on several quality primes. For landscapes, you won't require f/2.8 - a cheap 24-105 4 IS I instead will be better. For aps-c you'll find a variety of better alternatives too.

Dunno, can you afford a D750 or even a K-1 or D810 or so?

These would obviously be much better, and if you were able to afford frequently shooting film before, it should still be cheaper than said film anyhow.

why not? Ken Rockwell says a D3300 is all you should ever need.

I could definitely afford a K-1. justify it, though, I'm not sure. it seems enormous, for a start

Can someone explain how the fuck you get away with street photography with a DSLR?

Seems like snapping pictures is extremely obvious from the physical dimensions of the camera itself, as well as your posture when zooming/focusing/shooting and the sound. Good god, the sounds of *ker-SHEEEEK*. And thats just one shot, doing burst shots is just begging for stares and bad reactions.

I just don't understand.
>>
>>>3136457
> Ken Rockwell says a D3300 is all you should ever need.
And ergo, that's what he and everyone else who regularly uses a camera always uses? Nope.

Seriously, while you can do things with a $150 Chinese smartphone's camera too, you maybe just don't want to use (and loose photos to) a much less capable camera than what's possible with a bit more money. Even if it's a hobby.

> it seems enormous, for a start
Well, you could get an A7 II with smaller lenses or A6500 or EM1 II or X-Pro2 or such.

Just, you know, it's probably worth getting something better than a D3300. Most people who can do that (among people who use IL cameras, anyhow).

I've been Canon my entire career. I have a T5i right now with about a dozen lenses that fit it. I want to go mirrorless but I'm not super impressed with Canon's M line of cameras. I am, however, impressed with the Sony offerings.

Is there a way to get my Canon lenses to fit Sony mount, or is it worthwhile to even go Sony?
>>
>>3136486
> Is there a way to get my Canon lenses to fit Sony mount
Yea, you can put them on adapters. Works well with newer E-mount cameras.

> is it worthwhile to even go Sony?
Sure. Apart from very nice MILC bodies there are also a lot of great lenses for the E-mount.

Not exactly related, but does anybody else feel slightly...awkward when they aren't using their favourite lens?

I started with a 50mm and love it. It's how I shoot most of my pictures. Zooming with my feet has become second nature, but despite that, I like landscapes, and getting a 24-85 seemed like a good way to go, but something about using it just feels wrong. Of course, using it at 24mm is fantastic for landscapes, and it has the added convenience of being a 50mm if I want it to be, but I just can't get over the fact that I am much happier with the 50mm attached to it.

The reason I'm asking in this thread is because I only have two lenses, whereas some of you have loads.
>>
>>3136543

My favorite lens is the Tokina 11-20 f/2.8. The build quality is great, I even appreciate the antiquated AF/MF switching mechanism. It by far has given me my best shots, but my best shots are astrophotography or outdoorsy stuff when I typically shoot indoors. It's a specialized lens for me personally: the focal range isn't wide enough to use as an everyday.

Honestly I mostly shoot with my 50mm f/1.4 because as you said, you can zoom with your feet. Not so much with the Tokina.
>>
>>3136543
Awkward... not entirely.

But I'm often getting annoyed in post when I've had to use one of the lenses that isn't among my three sharpest.
I'm loosing quite a lot of shots to that problem.

I find my 15-30 on FF far more practical than my 50.

Yes, you can "zoom with your feet" but you can't always step back far enough for a 50.
You can usually step closer or just crop a bit in post.

1. Sony and others have completely silent cameras when set to fully electronic shutter. Burst away as you like.
2. Who says you can't shoot with a telephoto lens? People generally don't really notice those, no.
3. Small lenses are also a thing.
4. Who says you can't simply get noticed?

I have TWO cameras.

Nikon Coolpix DSLR 2014-2015. It's got good video quality and decent amount of settings for different types of subjects.

Ricoh KR-10, 1982. Picked it up for 10 dollars, half off at Salvation Army.

Evidently, the D3400 has a mirror that flops around for some reason. You can put it into "quiet mode" but that only means it makes half the noise when you press the button down then you hold the button down and when you are ready you can make the rest of the mirror noise by letting the button come up. so, it's like,

>button down
>*CHA-CHUNK! CHA-CHUNK!*
>holding....
>....
>button up
>*CHA-CHUNK! CHA-CHUNK!*

Instead of,

>*CHA-CHUNK! CHA-CHUNK! CHA-CHUNK! CHA-CHUNK!*

When just pressing normally.

I'm really missing my Coolpix L100, it was as silent as you can get when taking photos. But, it was just a point and shoot. I've been googling and it seems Nikon DSLRs are well known for loud mirror slapping noises.
>>
>>3136543
I never feel awkward because I only buy good lenses.
>>
>>3136997
"Silent" mode is a bit of a joke on some cameras, but full electronic shutters just tend to be... silent. You could get one of these.

Yea, maybe you still have a focusing motor in the lens that isn't fully silent, but getting a lens with a motor that you can't really hear isn't too hard either.
>>
>>3137004
Well, for focusing this thing is dead silent (same lens kit as OP). I may need to invest in or DIY a sound blimp.
>>
>>3137007
Nah, just a recent Sony. Or another camera with fully electronic shutter.

Again, there are lenses that are essentially silent. Yea, if you put your ear on them or had a sensitive large diaphragm condenser mic next to them you'd probably hear the motor, but it's essentially not something you'll generally hear.
>>
>>3137004
on my 60d it actually works, but on my previous d3200 it just split the mirror movement in 2 motions, it released it when I left the shutter, really a joke
>>
>>3135197

Looking at getting a used point and shoot type camera, as I don't like bringing my Canon 5D Mk II everywhere with me as it's a bit bulky. I've been look at the Sony RX100 series, but would like to hear others input.

$350 or less would be ideal. Looking for something with good glass, low aperture, etc. with decent noise performance. Sleek profile, and most importantly, small, pocketable size.
