Sup /p/

I am looking for some photography advice.

I need to take photos on washing machines in a very dark warehouse with a tablet.

I have a photography area where I can paint the walls / floor.

What would be the best colors to use?

In regards to lighting. the budget is tight and I've not got grands for a kino set up. What would you recommend I use to make it as bright as possible.

I was thinking about making a fluorescent light rig, would LED be better?

cheers

>What would be the best colors to use?

Show us a picture of the space and we'll probably be able to give you some better suggestions. Also, what are you aiming for? Is it going to be a decorated set, are you going to be cutting the pictures out, or do you just want a plain unobtrusive background?

Depending on your space/goals, there's a few options available, even on a low budget.

I'd lean more towards fluorescent over LED. You'd need pretty big panels to crank out enough lumens to shoot a washing machine with a tablet and not get noise. But again, seeing the space would help.

Also, what's the final application for the images?
>>
Don't do fluorescent, it will show banding on a tablet camera. Led may give funny results as LED's don't give off a wide spectrum of colour.

You'd be better off spending the money on an old dslr and tripod, then you could just use a desk lamp and a long shutter speed, and set the white balance off the presumably white washing machine.

>Don't do fluorescent, it will show banding on a tablet camera.

Surely that's only with fluorescent tubes.

You could probably sell the other shit and get a 16-35 f4 L IS but it's not essential. With the other two you will be covered for most eventualities. You could, in fact, sell the other shit and spend the money on beer and hookers

based on your list it looks like your more into gear than photos. try to pack some skill instead of a bunch of cameras.

So /p/, do you use Gimp or Photoshop?

Ignoring price (since tpb exists), what are some advantages and disadvantages of each? Can some processing tools be done in one, that can't be done or is much more difficult to do in the other?

I'm also wondering if any prominent photographers currently use Gimp.

Basically, what I'm asking is, is Gimp a really viable alternative with its own advantages, or is it the poorfag's solution who doesn't know how to torrent?

I use gimp because I'm poor and not a dirty pirate and have always used it. I don't know that it has any pros over photoshop but I do know that it can do all the important stuff a photographer needs to do.

Photoshop by far.

Though GIMP does have some unique/useful plugins.

I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but don't tell me I didn't warn you...

By 2020, a 7 year old could download an app onto their smartphone and have their photograph displayed on the Smithsonian the next day.

By 2025, the photography industry will become bankrupt and photography will disappear as an art form altogether.

During the first decade of the 21st century, film cameras were replaced by digital cameras. Dedicated digital cameras are now following the same path into oblivion with the advent of high-quality smartphone cameras.

Furthermore (and this is the important part that others often forget to mention)... The law of diminishing returns will result in the commoditization of photographic equipment to the point where a phone's camera is not even mentioned as part of a phone's specifications since every smartphone manufactured past 2025 will have a camera so advanced that any distinctions between brands will become meaningless.

My advice: Don't take that photography degree. If you have shares in Nikon, Olympus, Fujifilm, etc. you should prepare to sell them in the coming years.

Just to put it into perspective, the average smartphone 10 years ago had 10 times less megapixels than today and was 10 times more expensive. Now imagine a 2025 smartphone with a camera 10 times better than the 41MP 808 PureView, and is 10 times cheaper.

The photography industry will be completely cannibalized by the smartphone industry. The only hope is that companies making dedicated digital cameras today will change their business strategies towards supplying components for companies like Apple and Samsung.

Is there any way these protesters don't come off as very narrow minded? I've had some people vent on me before about medias lack of coverage of certain things but never anything of this magnitude. New York times picked this up and ran with it too which I'm glad of but the amount of support shown for the photographer must really pale in comparison to the amount of people who just do not trust journalists anymore

That school has endemic problems.
They don't even know why they are there. It's just mob mentality. They just want to be part of something, anything. This behavior is how things get co-opted and get out of hand. Al they need is a more charismatic leader.

ITT: We discuss our color management workflows.

I'm interested in how you guys keep colors consistent throughout your whole workflow, from taking the photograph to printing it.

I don't currently have a color calibrator or a colorchecker passport. However thinking of picking them up. I do have a gray card for white balance.

Also, do you guys edit in Adobe RGB, ProPhoto, or sRGB? and what is the final output colour space you'll use?

It's been six months since I took up photography, so I thought it would be a good idea to ask for feedback.

I'm going to post what I consider my best shots. I don't really have that many specific questions, so all comments are welcome.

One thing I've been wondering about lately is whether I should be anxious about using what is considered a mediocre lens at best (Sony 20mm f/2.8). Is there anything wrong with my photos which could be attributed purely to gear issues?

Thanks!

I literally had no time of getting anywhere better. The moment lasted couple of mins, if even that.

Focus on the sky, it was quite awesome.

Thoughts on these lights? I'm not a fan at all. I think most of the people that use them are pretty hacky and portraits taken with them look really off and not natural. The ring reflection in the eyes is very creepy.

as a 4x5 owner I can say that this is 98% true of what happens with 4x5 owners.

I shoot maybe 20 shots a year and (that's 1-2 studio sittings) and most of my friends consider me an active LF shooter.
