if your photographs have no coherent and defensible theoretical framework behind them, they can never be anything more than snapshits. it's the existence - or lack thereof - of this sort of onto-photographic Begriffsschrift that separates an artist-photographer from a tourist with a camera slung around his neck.
so tell me, /p/, which writers and thinkers are most influential in your work? what are the ideas driving your output? let's chat about this stuff.

I believe that God is the most influential writer and thinker in my work. The idea that God has made something beautiful drives my output and I always try to include Him in my photos to remind us (which sometimes even includes myself) that this isn't all there is.
btw im especially interested to hear from the people recently calling me a shitposter whose photos are a waste of paper ;^)

Why don't you prove them wrong by posting a decent photo instead?
Anyone have any TLR experience? I'm thinking of buying a Yashica Mat EM, fairly cheap and easy to operate
>>2701029
how cheap?
>>2701030
Quick eBay search gives me refurbished ones for about 200 dollars. When I say cheap I mean relative to nice Rolleiflex cameras

Hey /p/haggots. Let's start a thread with all the fast tips/"hacks" you have about photography. Extra points for cheat sheets like >pic related.

That thing is a pain in the ass to read because of the fine font and the retarded background. Git out.
this board is so trash we dont have hacks like /ck/s "food hacks" threads
why live.
Lets talk about photography workshops or masterclasses we've attended or planning to attend.
Also, what are some good workshops running in 2016?

i don't need some scrub to tell me what to do.
people that go to this workshops are losers.
i went to one with Andreas Rost. he was pretty based. it was like 2 weeks long, my first stuff to be put in a museum was my output of that workshop, so it was all good stuff for me.
i expected him to be more dusseldorff schooly (he was advertised somewhat that way), but still, he was a good curator/teacher

Sup streettogs
I had a few questions about journalism. I'd love to do this on my off time for events that are happening near me, and would even do it for next to no money or even free, I just really love photographing rallies and events.
But I have a few questions:
>press cards
>requirements
Some of the rallies I go to, I don't want to be associated with, and if I have a press pass I'll stand out (in case my face shows up in the paper). If I go to an event, I'd like a press pass, but have no idea how to go about getting one, what one entitles me to, or if it's legal to print a bullshit generic one like in pic related.
What sorts of requirements would I need, a degree or any relevant college experience, or just a camera? I just want to photograph and share, not necessarily write opinion pieces or articles.
Thanks in advance.

>and would even do it for next to no money or even free
this is why people can't make a living in photography. any amateur with a camera thinks he's good enough and on top of that tells a multimillion dollar media company he'll work for fucking free *becauz itz fun XDDD*

Is this photo bad? I took it a few months ago at J. Tree. I don't really practice but I'd like to know if I have any potential.

This is the original, before editing. I'm a bit of a film addict so I edited with the intention of a cinematic look. I've never color corrected either kind of just messed around in Photoshop. If anyone knows any good links for that would you mind sharing? Thanks!

Why would you edit in crop bars instead of just cropping the picture?
>>2709230
Idk I just like the bars. I did crop the photo to 2.35:1 and have it in a 16:9 black background. Anyways can I get some feedback on the photo? I would post more but I'm on my phone.

if youre making money from it yes, get it of course.
If you're a student, or have a friend with a .edu email, use it to sign up for CC. It costs me $15 Australian buckeroos a month for the whole suite, I'd imagine it'd be cheaper again in the US
Hey all,
I currently got a Canon 400D and few lenses.
Since I feel I get limited with it (pretty old stuff) was thinking on getting a 700D or 760D.
The 700D is relatively cheap and the shop has it on stock so I can get it quick (and cheap).
On the other hand, 760D spec wise seems much better, but it's like 250 euro more expensive + they dont have it on stock and I will need to wait for like a month to bring it.
What is your suggestion? Should I go with the 700D or it is better if I wait for the 760D?
>>2705270
The 760D is a half class higher than the 700D/750D. It has the 70D sensor which is more sensitive and gives much better results than the 700D/750D sensor. It is not as rugged build as the 70D but much more solid than the 700D/750D.
If I were you I would go for a used 70D or 60D because budget wise it is the same and you get better build quality and features. If ML and video is a priority for you then go for the 60D.
>>2705276
But 60D or 70D do not have wifi/nfc and I find those options interesting and probably usefull.
Also, I hate getting something used because I would not know if something is wrong with the camera (dropped, scratched sensor, etc).
I don't know what to do... I am thinking on this subject for a month now and cannot decide :)
>>2705284
Why would you want wifi or NFC? You will hardly use them for RAW
I have wifi option on my camera and have never used it. Not even for the few in-camera JPEGs.
On the used gear, the majority of /p/ buys used, the prev. owner was also a photographer, not an idiot kid with an xbox. It was well taken care of in 99% of cases, if not it is also described in description, also price would be much lower than the average market.
Don't be afraid, I got mine used and not a single problem with it. To be sure, check the feedbacks on the seller.

Was the sensor busted or did they want to have fun destroying the camera?
I'm sure this gets asked all the time, but is there some kind of thread for people getting started? Christmas was coming up and I was wanting to know what kind of options I had for cameras, good price points, equipment, etc.
I'm interested in videography and filmmaking, for things such as car shows, such as this video here:

Anyone with any tips or helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.

where?
Use the gear thread and/or the videographer thread.
My advice would be to look around for five minutes before posting when you're new to a board.
just bought my first REAL reflex a Nikon d 100 (only body) i have a Pentax super me 50 mm lens will it fit ? i know the Nikon has a F-mount and the Pentax has a K-F mount i tryed to find the adapter but failed.
And also tell me how you got started with photography what was your first machine and your true first machine
Heads up, your image quality will be shit if you use a K-mount to Nikon F-mount adapter on a D100.
Nikon is f mount, pentax is k.
No you can't use that lens on that body.
is this too edgy for my photography assignment
its supposed to be a self-portrait

Should have done it for real. Yes you fucking idiot.
yes.
ok thanks friends. won't go through with it
I want to photograph ballet dancers. I'm an underweight 30 year old man with long hair. My gear consists of two old 35mm film cameras that I bought at a thrift shop and a cheap tripod. I only recently picked up the hobby, so I don't have a portfolio of any kind. I don't already know anybody who does ballet or who knows ballet dancers. But I want to photograph ballet dancers more than anything.
So, how the fuck am I supposed to accomplish this?

Are you American or European? Is there a ballet scene in your nearest city? The most logical step is literally to call up a place that does ballet and tell them exactly what you just told us. You'll find that all performers, including ballet people, require a certain amount publicity and photos, even if those photos are just for their facebook page. It could even work out better for them than it does for you if you take their photos. So don't be afraid of getting in touch with them.
Try and start small. A teaching group would be good.
Even if you don't have a portfolio, you should definitely setup a flickr or similar account so that you can send them a link when you get in touch. It'll make things easier for you if they can look at your previous work.
>>2709843
I'm American. I know there's a ballet scene here since I've been to a few performances with my mother when I was younger, but I haven't looked into ballet studios in my area yet. I'm honestly mainly concerned that I won't be taken seriously and that they'll think that I'm just some kind of pervert creep or something.
>>2709847
that this worries you makes you seem like a perverted creep.
how do you friends organize your images?
i dont.
>>2709625
By country. In that folder I have all the jpegs, a folder called RAW that contains all the raws, another folder called edits where the good raws are moved to and postprocessed, and lastly a folder called VIDEO for any recordings I've done which are few since I Dont care about video.
My USA folder is organized by State and then date of pics taken. I Dont leave NY/nj, but it helps keep organization
