The newest edition of Magnum Contact Sheets is slightly smaller than the original for a fraction of the cost. I think I paid £35 for my copy, new. Definitely worth that.
If you're looking to branch into photobooks on a budget check out Phaidon's new 55 series. I have the Daido Moriyama one and it's pretty good. Good mix of photos with a bit of explanation. There are parts where an image is spread over two pages which I'm not a big fan of, but it's to be expected with a book of this size and price point. You should be able to find them on amazon where ever you are, but this is the UK shop: http://uk.phaidon.com/store/photography/new-format-55s/
Looks good! I'll definitely have a look at them. I recently got a copy of Magnum Magnum, really nice piece. I like about the more 'expensive' books (expensive = unlike pic attached) that they include good text, eg The Americans or the essays in Winogrand's SFMOMA

I got Salgado's Genesis last year and it's additive weight made my book shelf bend a bit.
As for price worthyness I've moved to buying books used off of Amazon based on where they were printed. US books from .com, Japanese books from .co.jp
The only reason I don't switch from DSLR to mirrorless is because of battery life. If they could improve battery life to at least 600-700 shots (without battery grip) I'd sell my nikon gear in a heart beat.

Buy another battery. Two batteries and a mirrorless is still smaller than any DSLR.
Problem solved, /thread, should've posted in the gear thread anyway, fag.

buy another battery. put in pocket.
So they still put pissweak batteries in their shit-tier cameras huh?
Lay off the chimping and live-view.
I use a grip, but even after shooting 1000+ frames in a day and having my camera awake and autofocusing for a large portion of that time I could easily do the same for the next two days and even then probably get home with 1/3 charge.

I'm interested in the way people retouch a picture and researching differences among countries. Can you retouch the image?
Rules:
-Do not compose any other picture/texture.
-Write the name of software you used. If possible, tell me what you did.
-Answer the question: Are you a professional photographer?
RAW&JPEG: https://www.dropbox.com/s/n51c6zd2pqh6ijo/retouch.zip?dl=0

I can't do it ATM, but Luminosity Masks in Photoshop are the way to go, they give you the most control and allow percise adjustments to be made in certain parts of the image, or global. I'm in the US, and am not a professional but I do have a good deal of understanding in Photoshop and had 3 (now 5) years of experience with it before I picked up photography as a hobby.
Eh? Eh? You like?

I mean it's good, real fucking good, but it's still not perfect.
I'd have rather seen a full reflection and a more vertical, symmetrical photo.
Considering he's tried 3/4 of a million times I'd expect a much better shot. 6/10

Exactly what I was thinking. He didn't even crop the image so the bird was centred. If you're going to call it "the perfect shot", than it better actually come somewhat close to the claim.

How do I use classic exposure steps on a Zenit 11? Like -3, -2, -1, -2/3, -1/3, +-0, +1/3, +2/3 and so on.
I always used this on other cameras to test film in a specific camera, but the Zenit doesn't have dial. Is there a way to work around this?
>>2692738
I'm probably wrong but can't you just meter your shot, shoot for what would be say -3, and just write it down with your shot number and settings?
>>2692735
I bought an Elan 7 because I'm invested in the EF lineup, wanted to shoot film, and can't really afford to get another full setup.
Hi anons, does anyone have any experience with mirror lenses?
I am interested in afording a mirror lens for my APS-C cam for around €100, but dont know if its worth.
Are they worth the money?
>>2713027
You don't have control over aperture, focus is hard to get right, bokeh is atrocious, I mean making your eyes bleed kind of bad
Some of them are okay, most are shit. Some russian ones are good some are not. Samyang/Rokinon/Bower are decent but not overly good.
Best is the Tamron 300mm.
Also there are better 300mm manual lenses with perture control, some are even cheaper with much better IQ.
Some people still use them for birding, some for astrophotography but... I wouldn't recommend getting into them. Only buy one if you can spare the money for a toy project possibly ending in the trashcan.
Mirror-guy reporting in.
In my experience the bowers are recent knockoffs of the older Sigma 600mm f8 mirror/reflex I owned as a kid decades ago. They aren't great, so don't expect much.
People will tell you to put a 2x TC on a regualr 300mm. There is validity to this, but that's also a shitty way to get big focal length. Mileage will vary with different combinations of course.
If you actually want 500mm plus:
MTO-11CA 10/1000
or
SMC Pentax Reflex 1:11 1000mm
equally good. The MTO is easier to pull apart and has several mount options, and should be obtainable for ~$300US, the pentax is more likely to cost near a grand.
Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 500mm f/8 Mirror (55BB)
or
ZM-6A 6.3/500 Mirror Zenit Tele Lens M42
tamron is smaller and lighter, and really sleek focus helicoid thats quick to snap focus.
ZM is big and heavy, larger diameter and longer. Built like a weapon and somewhat brighter to look through. Image quality on either is similar. I use the ZM generally and the tamron if i felt like a lighter lens and the sun was blazing.
Best catadioptric lens I own is:
Tamron 350mm f5.6 (06B )
which is really small and light, and expensive, but you would in almost every case be better off with a modern autofocus non reflex lens.
Autofocus is what you will miss if your subject moves at all.
A monopod is very useful.
Manfrotto 685B Neotec monopod
and
Manfrotto 496RC2 Compact Ball Head with Quick Release Plate 200PL-14
is perfect. Even if you are 6'4" and don't need to angle up a lot.
A friend has a sigma bigma
Sigma Bigma Sigma 50 -500mm F4.5-6.3
and he reckons so long as you shoot at f/8 it's pretty decent. From what little I have seen I would tend to agree.
Catadioptrics do not produce chromatic aberrations. That's one of the few reasons they outperform similar non-reflex lenses.
The boke is attractive or 'cool looking' to regular Joes. Disregard sperglord photographer wannabes labelling it bad.

Theres thousands. But as the date/index image changes so too does the lens usually change to something else.
To be honest I gave up using my cats a while back. Now that I have found the most useful focal lengths for a couple of things I do regularly, and really NEED autofocus in order t be quick enough, I'll probably never use my catadioptrics again. Although I do half-plan to shoot the military helicopter display next year at RiverFire with a 1000mm... if i can be bothered luggin all the gear around and probably being tracked by most of the onboard targetting computers.

Seriously, go kill yourself
>>2712973
it's good.
- it's properly exposed
- composition is fine (maybe crop a bit tighter)
- action is well caught
- good expressions on the subject's faces
- there is a story here and it invites us, the viewers, to wonder what is happening here. it looks to me like the guy to the right pushed the guy to the left, with malevolent intent by the look in his eyes. so i wonder why is the guy on the right so happy? typically if someone pushes you, you'd be startled or angry.
to improve it, choose a better background unless it is critical to the story you are trying to tell. the plain brick background is kind of a letdown with this interesting and kind of mysterious scene.
I went out night shooting.
Can anyone tell me if there is anything good in these? Tonight I was practicing back button focus and trying to include people and get closer to them in my photos since I usually shy away from that sort of thing.

>>2712195
they are 2 separate beasts OP, BM4k is super 35 4k and the Bolex is super 16 2k
the BM has higher resolution and a larger sensor for a more big production look.
you are though, going to need a LOT of HD space, hope you like buying terabytes by the dozen
the bolex has a very 16mm look, so if you don't mind sacrificing some DOF control for that 80s-90s indi film look. go for it.
The BM pocket cam is also super 16 an about half the price of the bolex but it is only HD.
