Anyone have any experience with the Tokina 24-70 2.8, and how it performs vs. the tamron 24-70 2.8 ?

I'm deciding between these 2 lenses.

Both are objectives which you may use with great success.

Both are objectives which are outperformed by modern models.

Got a decent telescope for Christmas and want to try my hand at some astrophotography, been using the moon for practice, I have some night time shots, but took this one today in the day time and it's probably my favourite so far.

Can I have some honest opinions and maybe some input on how I can do it better?

1) People have seen the moon, so just a photo of the moon, while being a personal accomplishment for you, doesn't really have a whole lot to offer your viewer, unless it's really special, which this isn't.
2) You need to work on your composition. You're only using about 1/3rd of your frame, and the rest isn't doing much to support the scene
3) You need to work on your post processing. This looks really soft and muddy, which can be polished up quite a bit in post if you know what you're doing. Also, the darkened corners are distracting. Cloning out dust is pretty important too.
4) Shooting technique. I'm not sure how good your telescope is, but you're not getting a lot of fine detail out of it, so you're never going to "wow" anyone until you solve that hiccup.

Yeah I know the moon isn't the most impressive or rare thing in the sky lol, but as I said I'm just using it as practice until I get my technique better.

The only using 1/3rd of the frame issue could be solved by cropping, right?

What's good software to use post? I have GIMP, but I'm still learning the basics really. The corners being dark is because of the scope, but that's easily cropped out I guess,.

The fine detail seems to depend a lot on the clouds and atmosphere. I see a lot more details with my 2X Barlow lens, but with the moon only being in crescent phase, the magnification doesn't leave me much to focus on. I'm hoping to get some better shots using it at half or full moon.

Here's one of the night time pics I took, they all came out quite blurry, but I realised it was my fault, the hot air from my houses heating system kept blowing in front of the scope -_-

So basically, crop more, learn post processing technique?

Get a fast prime lens (f1.2 - f2.8) so you can open it up and have as much light come in because more than likely there's going to be shitty production.

Don't be afraid to push ISO to 1600 - 3200 so you can get shutter speeds of 1/200 - 1/250 (you can fix the grain in post)
>>
Two bodies, one wide zoom (16-35 2.8 is good), one short tele prime (85 1.4 or 1.8, 100 2) if in local bar type concerts, or a tele zoom (70-200 2.8) for stadium concerts in the photo pit.

Music and sports are two genres that you absolutely cannot skimp on fast pro glass, so if you're on a budget, it's going to really hurt trying to get the right gear to be able to take the best photos.

You can get by with a single body and nifty fifty, but you will be very limited in what you can take.

I'm just getting into everything so either way I'd either learn photography or videography

It's sad how transparent it is when people like >>2740387 start false-flagging dumb gear question threads, as though it's not immediately obvious what they're doing. Maybe in their heads, they think that this will change the collective opinion of the board in their favor again, but to the rest of us, they just come off as emotional, obnoxious sacks of shit.

That really still depends on how much photography you want to do, of what, and so on.

I'd default to a GoPro, Yicam or smartphone camera for a low weight setup. Also has a pretty good combo with solar chargers and 18650 batteries for power.

But if you care more about photos or videos in good quality, you might take a more heavy / expensive DSLR / MILC setup with you. I really don't know where your preferences lie...

ok /p/ i need some help.

My birthday and christmas are within 3 days of each other and my mom's boyfriend, who is an Italian, decided to get me a camera.

The Camera he chose was a Calumet C1 8x10 camera, complete with 8ft studio railing system.

I just got a medium format camera to play around with, but now I am trying to figure out how I am going to incorporate a camera that makes a negative as big as my face. So i have a couple questions:

1. How unwieldy is something like this to carry around? It is still being shipped so I haven't seen it yet.

2. Best place to get 8x10 film and are there any emulsions that are different from the 120 format offerings?

3. How the fuck do i develop this film, or is there a recommended place to do so?

I would prefer to not let this sit in my house unused and to make the best of it, im just not quite sure how.

Pic related, the C1 next to a 4x5 and a 35mm SLR

>1. How unwieldy is something like this to carry around?
It is feasible if you drive. You don't want to carry it on your back all the time, tho it is possible.

>2. Best place to get 8x10 film and are there any emulsions that are different from the 120 format offerings?
This depends on where you live. You can get some ortho films that are not available to smaller formats. Sheets will be expensive, considerably more than 4x5 sheets. (here in Br, it's common to cut x-ray sheets (13x18) to fit, x-ray are very very cheap compared to traditional sheets)

>3. How the fuck do i develop this film, or is there a recommended place to do so?
You develop it in trays, just like paper. There are some labs that will do it (and you'll may want it for c41/e6), again depends on where you live.

Don't waste much time talking about LF on /p/, there are people on largeformatphotography.info forum far more experienced on the matter than me or anyone here. Also, there are great articles on getting started on LF there.

Fucking great gift, but LF takes a lot of work.

>1. How unwieldy is something like this to carry around? It is still being shipped so I haven't seen it yet.
Extremely unwieldy. You would be surprised by just how big and heavy large format is until you have to carry it around. You see it in photos like the one you posted and you think, "damn, that's big." You are in no way prepared for the reality of the situation.
>2. Best place to get 8x10 film and are there any emulsions that are different from the 120 format offerings?
Online. No.
>3. How the fuck do i develop this film, or is there a recommended place to do so?
In a developing tank for large format. This is the kind of film and process that you'll want complete control of, from start to finish. Film is about 10 to 20 bucks a sheet, and development is pretty expensive.

Hey there /p/. I've shot few rolls of film now and enjoyed it tremendously. I've decided to buy a somewhat big supply of film so I don't have to buy few rolls at a time from the local shop.

Prices however in Finland are somewhat expensive. For example one roll of HP5 costs 7,20€ and ten rolls of HP5 is 62€. I found this one German shop (fotoimpex) selling HP5 for under 5€. Their shipping was a little expensive but on the other hand big order might justify the cost.

Are there any other options (Germany, Estonia?) or should I just bite the bullet and buy my film from a Finnish store?

You live in one of the richest countries in the world yet you still complain of the prices? Being poor in a rich country ain't so bad compared to being poor in a third world country.
I live in a 3rd world country but I work my ass off so I can afford all the luxuries I have. Stop complaining. #firstworldproblems
>>
>>2744275
Well German Amazon is selling HP5 for over 8€ per roll which is really bananas. And ten rolls of the same stuff in UK Amazon is around 62€ (the same price as in Finland). So I don't think Amazon is the way to go.

I have GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) /p/.

Ever since I bought my first DSLR, a second hand Nikon D90 around a year ago, I have been acquiring gear and have already bought a bunch of lenses, flashes, camera accessories and a film camera.

I probably have spent around $1000+ on all my gear on 1 year alone. Now I'm on the hunt again for another lens because it's kind of cheap.

I hope to get the payment back when I become a pro but there are a few photography jobs here and I still suck.

Anyhow, how can I just stop myself from watching gear reviews and wanting gear and just focus on taking photos?

>>
For me it happened when I got sick of luggig around 2 camera, 4+ lenses, 3 flashes, triggers, and light stands. Shooting became a chore and I slowly started cutting back on what I took out with me. Eventually I started selling off what I no longer used and kept the bare essentials. Now I have a digital camera with 2 primes and a medium format camera with 2 primes. I never take either out at the same time and rarely take more than 1 lens with me.

A simple setup allows me to spend more time seeing and looking and less time figuring out which pieces of gear will yield the best photo. Keeping things simple and learning to work with what you have will result in more keepers in the long run.
>>
This is me too, but with film cameras. It doesn't help that I'm particularly good at finding used stuff for cheap.
>>
>>2742108
>I probably have spent around $1000+ on all my gear on 1 year alone

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOO

you dont have GAS, youre just a poorfag. photo is kinda expensive if you want to take the serious route.

now, think of this: every buy of gear should have a functional reason behind it. you dont buy a wide angle for the fuck of it, or because "everyone should have at least one". buy it because your type of photos need it.
