I'd like to discuss the selfie.
Why do people (read as normies) like selfies so much?
Is it to prove you were at the location? Then why not just have someone take your photo?
Does the act of taking the photo yourself make the landscape, monument, view etc. more memorable? Why?
What does putting yourself in the frame add to the photo?
What about the selfie stick? Sometimes selfie sticks can get the camera to spots you can't reach but then you're shooting blind.
Is it a subversion of traditional photography? Ignoring composition and framing and focusing on getting your face in the shot.
In my opinion it seems like selfies are one big "haha look at me, i'm being silly, i'm in the photo with the statue XD". But I think this would wear off fast and thus couldn't explain the growing popularity of the selfie?
Lastly, is there artistic merit to the selfie at all?
>What about the selfie stick? Sometimes selfie sticks can get the camera to spots you can't reach but then you're shooting blind.
Any male who owns a selfie stick is a creep imho. The only thing I've seen them used for is getting upskirt shots.

What do you guys use to calibrate your monitors? I never really thought about it until ordering some test prints as it was never something that crossed my mind. I started out as a gamer so accurate color reproduction was never an issue I ever saw, but now it is. Was thinking of maybe budgeting about $500 give or take for a calibrator and monitor, though getting a calibrator first and seeing if it could even fix my monitor. Pic related, seems decent for the price based on reviews, but was curious as to what you guys use. Also, any sub $500 monitor suggestions are appreciated as well. [:
I never got really into it but does anyone have any experience with DisplayCAL and ArgyllCMS?
>>2858245
>>2858245
I am using this very combination, ColorMunki with the Dispcal and Agryll... gotta say Dispcal is a way more thorough application than the original software it came with.
Also, I wouldn't pay anyone to get my screen calibrated, this is something that should be done on a monthly basis or so, the very point of having calibrated screens is that you know you are pretty much on spot.. if you don't calibrate your screen regularly you can only hope.
>>2858259
This is exactly why I am starting to look in to it. Since I got my test prints back, they look quite a bit different than on my monitor. And so before I do any more editing on new pics or can get any stuff actually printed, I feel I need to have my monitor calibrated and may even just need to get a new monitor and calibrate that as well.
I am trying to get into street photography. Please give me some critique on some of the photos I shot during my stay in Japan.

Fuck it /p/,
I just recently ordered a canon 50mm f1.8 lens from an online second hand market place. The guy send it to me and with the tracking number I could see the package was delivered last friday night. I wasn't in my room so another person from my hall must have accepted the package. Now I only suspect 1 guy that must've fucking took it and I asked him about it. He said he didn't take it so obviously I can't prove shit. I'm so fucking pissed off, fucking 70 euro's down the drain.
My last hope is to contact the mailman and ask who he gave the package to and let him identify that guy from facebook pics. Then threaten him to call the fucking cops if he doesn't return it. What more can I do in this situation?? I feel like i'm being cucked big time.

Man up and murder your neighbour
>>2857452
what shithole do you live in where your neighbors can accept packages in your name? you should be complaining with the fucking mailman. it was never delivered to you, so it was never delivered, period. do you not have cameras that could have recorded your neighbors getting your stuff? if you don't, you should be spending your next 70 euros on that instead.
do you have some kind of insurance for stolen packages?
Redpill me on 50mm lenses.
They're the cheapest lenses in a manufacturer's lineup, fast and can be very sharp when you stop them down. They also reproduce a somewhat natural horizontal field of view.
>>2855868

if you ever need anything else you're a meme yourself
They're some of the cheaper lenses you can get and are more or less what your eye sees. Seriously, you can walk around with the other eye open and just see the frame lines.
>bought a tamron 70-200 vc usd for my 5d2
>great lens
>now I am switching to Nikon (due to better lenses, tougher cameras)
my 70-200 tamron which I've always kept in a ziplock bag with silica gels in a drybox has fucking like 6 pieces of dust inside
>a few right god damn behind the front element, a couple specs behind the rear element
How in the fuck does this happen to an internally focusing lens with no push-pull zoom which I have hardly ever used (maybe less than 1,000 shots since buying it 9 months ago
I bought it new 1,000 dollars on a sale with a 1 year tamron warranty, and a 5 year store warranty which apparently doesn't cover costs of dust cleanings.
I wouldn't mind selling this lens for 700 dollars or something but, anything less would make me feel horrible, wat do
> has fucking like 6 pieces of dust inside
Oh no!
Get a fucking clue, internal focusing lenses still have components that cause vacuums within the lens, that sucks air in and dust with it. Dust doesn't make a blind bit of difference and only serves to infuriate autists
http://kurtmunger.com/dirty_lens_articleid35.html
There are several articles on this, my 80-200 2.8 L has plenty of dust particles inside it and makes no difference to IQ.
>now I am switching to Nikon (due to better lenses, tougher cameras)
>tougher cameras than canon
Well, /p/, this is it.
We've finally has something that surpasses the 19th century optics technology that we've been using for over a century.
http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-36438686
First prototypes are small (about the size of a microscope lens) but will eventually come in all sizes.
This technology will
>focus sharper
>be manufactured cheaper
>completely eliminate aberrations
it will look like shit.
>>2854796
Microscope objective vs equivalent lens
>focus sharper
>completely eliminate aberrations
nice priorities, gearfags.
