There's something very aesthetic about 30s-40s colour photography (the original colour photos, not coloured in b/w), especially from nazi Germany, that seemed to be quite ahead in colour photography, although Russia also knew pioneering work, especially from Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky. However, the Russian photos were made from 3 separate colour-filtered monochromatic photos, whilst (I think) the German ones were made with real colour film.

Would anyone happen to know more about what processes were used? I'd like to know how they were made and what caused the specific aesthetics.

Well of course, but what film would have been used? And what development process?

C41 was only developed in 1972 and its predecessor, C22 in the 50s, although there apparently wasn't a difference with a proprietary Kodak process already in use in 1942. Many of the nazi photos were made in the late 30s, and probably not with Kodak materials.

Agfa.

>In late 1936 Agfa introduced Agfacolor Neu (New Agfacolor), a pioneering color film of the general type still in use today.[2] The new Agfacolor was originally a reversal film used for making "slides", home movies and short documentaries. By 1939 it had also been adapted into a negative film and a print film for use by the German motion picture industry.

your first pic looks like a slide to me, so most probably was that neu afgacolor. which, according to the wiki, was germanys response to kodachrome.

>After the war, Agfa's former production plant at Wolfen was located in the Soviet occupation zone which was to become East Germany. For several years after the war, the Wolfen plant continued producing Agfacolor films, until in 1964 East Germany lost the licence to the Agfa brand name. From 1964 onwards, the plant was renamed into ORWO (short for Original Wolfen), producing color films under the name of ORWOcolor.

there you go. see if you can get some ORWO color, might still have some of that wwii magic.

Black Friday camera deals are usually good but only applicable to the entry-level dslr's and accessories.
Its a great time to save on bags I can tell you that much.

How does /p/ pay the bills?

I work as a bartender during the week and have recently taken up nightclub photography on the weekends. Used to do a lot of event photography but that has slowed down a fair bit.

Currently earning $500 a week with the bartending and $400 with the nightclub work every weekend.

Was getting paid about $600 or so a week there with the event photography but I've only had one job in the past two months.

Guys - Got a discussion...
As has been said "the best camera is the one you have with you" -

Does anyone carry their DSLR with them at all times/damn near always? If so, what do you carry? Special lenses/batteries? What kind of case do you keep it in, if any?

Been thinking more and more about getting the pancake 24mm for my T6i and carrying it a lot more. Not that I'd never use my other lenses but I find myself in many photo ops I wish I could grab. And before you say anything phone camera is not an option really right now it's shitty as fuck.

Let me know what you all do.

I carry my 6D and Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC around most days. Then again, I do get paid to take photos, so like I have a choice otherwise.
>>
>>2926711
Yeah, I'm definitely under the hobby-tier photographer. I'm just trying to get a feel for it. I'll probably start doing it but I need to evaluate the bag I'm carrying. I'm not carrying a camera bag into work and I'm not carrying a DSLR in my shitty laptop bag that is barebones just enough to protect a company issued MS Surface.
>>
It's a constant debate for me, like I went on a short work trip to Charlotte, NC and decided I wouldn't have time to shoot and sure enough just around my hotel there were a few things I would have loved to shoot and my smartphone didn't have the ability to do it (timing a light rail train coming by, shutter lag on my Nexus 6 made it impossible) so I missed a bunch of cool shots.

Occasionally I'll be driving and see something cool and think "fuck I wish I had my camera" too - usually birds or something.

At the same time I generally don't just carry my camera around on my daily commute because I generally don't use it or just do snapshits without much thought. Sometimes on my drive home I'll see an interesting scene and think about it with different light, plan it, etc and come back. Especially for landscapes.

My photos are pretty much shit by you guys standards and by the photography community at large. I'm new to the field but I really like it and I take pictures with my babbys first rabal nearly every day. I'm going to use this thread to post what I think are my best pictures from every day and what you guys are going to do is either ignore it, insult it or, hopefully, provide some genuine criticism. I've got more than a few in the magazine now. I'm going to post a few and go from there.

Hey guys, I just started shooting with an old 35mm film SLR and after I had finished my roll I rewound it an found all the film spooled around the grip thing on the right hand side. It did not seem right when rewinding it because the rewind spinner was chugging every push.

What did I do wrong? Was it when I loaded the film I made a mistake? How can I correct this in the future. I hate wasting film.

I loved the axiom idea in the beginning. Then I observed that "company" and get a little deeper look. Over the time I got enormously frustrated and annoyed by their politics and communication. It is a shit, lazy and unfortunately extremely unprofessional bunch of nerds and wannabe biz-guys.
The whole process takes like forever and the price will be horendous in the end.

They just miss the core feature. It is not like they could build a good camera. For this they don't have the resources and experience. It is about the open-source opportunity. I'd love to program on sensor level for my needs. But they missed that and went more into 'how about wifi' bullshit.

Oh and after crowdfunding and wasting time with their nerdy jokerey, they found out in the middle of the lrocess that they need more money and asked for 'investing' again. What didn't work. S VC came into the picture and we all know how good VC and OS come along.

Hello /p/. I am looking into purchasing my first DSLR. I've only ever shot film in the past, or cheap Canon Rebel digitals. I'm really wanting to invest in a good, accessible FF system which can replace my old equipment.

I am seriously considering the Pentax K1, based on the design, IQ, features, but primarily it's price-point as compared to Canon, Nikon, and Sony.

I am wondering your thoughts and suggestions on both the camera, Pentax K-Mount system, and also what reasons there might be to wait and invest into a Nikon/Canon/Sony system, and why, etc.

if you're buying used canikon, pentax K-1 might end up not being that much of a good deal, but you are buying into unique pentax stuff such as godlike ergonomics, legit weather sealing and built like a tank, pixel shift (if you're doing still stuff like landscape or taking hi-res of paintings/architecture/food/misc macro), and being the only hipster within a 100-mile radius that actually owns a digital pentacks camera

it's hard to give you an actual recommendation without knowing what the fuck you need/want from a full frame dslr

I'm doing a pinup photoshoot but I hate how modern pinup photography looks too crisp and clean. Is there anyway to give my pictures the soft feel from vintage photos? (I plan on both modern looking ones as well as a set designed to emulate the older look)

Shoot it clean and sharp, then dick with things like vintage film filters and blurring.

The old school way is to smear vaseline on a lens (or like a UV filter for easier cleaning), then shoot through that, but I strongly suggest you do it digitally to a sharp image because that gives you more control over the final look.

No. They would either use softfocus lenses or a softfocus filter, sometimes combined with a film without an anti-halation layer.

just shoot film maiman. crappy ass emulsion+oldass lens will give you the exact look youre looking for.
