What gives old photographs that distinct, "other-worldy" sort of look? A lot of people say it's the color, but I can still see it when one converts an old Kodachrome picture to black & white. It's almost like there's a "haze" to it that modern photographs lack.
Was it the old cameras? Old film stock?

I've been given the opportunity do display some of my work in a local gallery.
I can only choose 5 images and am having some trouble selecting them so I'm going to post some in hopes that /p/ can help me decide.
I'll start with the 3 I'm leaning toward putting in the galley and then follow with a few more that I'm on the fence about.

Here's a legit protip:
If you want to shoot portraits, your ability to connect/communicate with people and to develop a good rapport is more important than your technical ability as a photographer.
Stop shooting pictures of your cat. Get out of your house. Leave your camera at home. Yes, leave your camera. Get out and become a productive, engaged, integrated member of society. Get a job that requires social interaction. Learn to talk to people. Get comfortable around others. Learn to communicate effectively. Learn to write well. Read good books. Go to places and do things that you'd never normally do. Take risks.
That's the only way you're going to develop the skills you need to do what you want.
Anybody can learn how to expose and compose a shot. That shit's easy. But if you want to take pictures of anything other than your cat or some shitty, shallow DOF shots of bees at the park, you're going to have to get way outside of your comfort zone.

Canon ae-1, Pentax spotmatic, anything from Minolta X series
The Nikon 2020 is an awesome and cheap body(30$) that allows for auto focus, auto wind that allows for rapid fire, aperture and shutter priority modes, exposure comp, and the lightest of all I mentioned. Nikon has great cheap film bodies with high tech, but Nikon lenses are generally on the more expensive side.
Also whatever you get your sister, just get her a cheap nice 50mm to start with
