Anyone had any experience photographing in the IR spectrum or using IR for illumination?
I'm guessing that when you're using a regular digital camera it is best for the IR illuminator wavelengths to be as close to 700nm as possible, but I'm having a hard time finding any below 850nm.
>>2981884
Normal digital cameras have a filter specifically designed to block IR.
So if you're serious you'll have to remove this filter or buy a specialist camera that doesn't have one.
With an unmodified camera you can capture IR from sunlight by using a lens filter that blocks all light except IR.
But it required long exposures since the camera is so insensitive to IR, and I don't think it's even possible with a weak IR LED.
>>2981884
That is because with a normal non-modified camera the long end of the spectrum it can see is not really IR, it is NIR or near IR. Somewhere between IR and visual. Actual IR wavelength is measured mostly in micrometers. As in over 100nm to 9000nm and more.
It's like your camera can only see in blue but all you have is red.
>>2981884
Shot several rolls of IR film, it's one of my favorite things to do early summer. All in daylight though. Regular flashguns can be used to provide illumination, but god only knows what the correct exposure settings are. I've noticed that tungsten-halogen car headlights send out a lot of energy in near IR wavelength, so a powerful halogen lamp could work, like the ones used at construction sites. They produce a fuckton of heat though. That is unless you require a "black" light source, in which case I guess you'll have to find an IR illuminator that works in the spectrum your camera is sensitive to. Some old military IR illuminator might be close enough, I assume modern ones work further down the spectrum.

have you lashed yourself 3 times today for being a white male photographer?
>>2981392
Where was the problem exactly? The author has phrased the title as an SJW clickbait and then goes rambles about the works of non-white photographers, which is fine. It feels as though the author was forced to shoehorn white mails with an implication of a problem in the article to get it published, so he went with the laziest possible attempt. Even that article on color film being racist from a few years back had more substance to it.
Frankly, it isn't mine or anybody's fault if brown/yellow/vagina/xir/ayylmaos aren't out there making their point of view into photos. If a ghetto google can afford those expensive sneakers, he can certainly afford an acceptable camera to get started. Even less relevant in my country where the government showers you with money for doing nothing.

Zzz..
Petapixel ought to get some journoes that're not steeped in the "white guilt" shit, and put these freshly-graduated interns in charge of press release rewrites only. Probably they wouldn't give such a podium to a white supremacist either.
Any tips and hints for buying used cameras from Ebay?

God works in mysterious ways

It is not the light, it is the aperture physically restricting the angles where the light propagates through the lenses and makes the circle of confusion smaller when not around the plane of focus.

I would have thought that it might be more logical to get 'clearer' image with more light in..
Why does nobody talk about these things, they seems like a very good if not better alternative to owning a Leica ?

They do have a good following, but they have a number of noticeable differences to the Leica.
The most significant are the rangefinder base distance and the build quality. The rangefinder base distance is the distance between the rangefinder window and the viewfinder. See the little black box to the left of the white window? That's the rangefinder window. Now look where it is on a Leica M3. It's a lot farther away. The longer the distance of the rangefinder base, the easier (or more precise) the focusing is.
The build quality is also not quite up to Leica's standard. The body feels comparatively 'cheap' in the hand, and the shutter is quite loud.
All that said though, they're great cameras and a great way to start using M-mount lenses

that's not an epson.
Hey guys.
I recently discovered i had a talent for photography, and that i really enjoy shooting the emotions that show on peoples faces.
I was recently on a LARPing event, whitch is i hobby of mine for 4 years. I was feeling hungover and didn't feel like fighting, so one of the guys gives me his camera after i asked him. It had one of those zoom things(objectives?) that was wider and i guess had automatics light configurations, and another one was for a way larger zoom and focus. Both were on autofocus.
It was a nikon i think,
So, what i'm asking, is it realistic to find similar gear, for a realistic price(eastern europe, they dont seem to be more than 200-300 euros for a mid tier one), and make this a casual hobby?

Well film requires continuity.
With a photograph you have to be skillful enough to compress your entire narrative into a single frame - whereas with film you have to be skillful enough to tell a comprehensible story over many thousands of frames.
I would say that becoming a successful film maker is much harder than becoming a successful photographer. A photograph is much more open to interpretation, and requires very little investment of time as a viewer, whereas a film has a very specific narrative, an intention, and is a lengthy experience. If you do it wrong you're going to really piss off the viewer.
If you become good at finding a way to tell a long story - make films.
If you're better at saying everything in an image - make photographs/Paintings.
Either one will require a lot of concentration to get it right - but film making requires that little bit extra just to keep the viewer interested.
>>2977995
> How different are the principles of photography and filming?
Moment in time vs sequence of time.
> Does one take more skill than the other?
Certainly takes more engineering to make a film camera.
To get good sequences of images (rather than one good image in a sequence) you might also have to shoot more and from more angles.
And you can't use the "easy mode" blast of light flash devices to help the technology capture a clean proper image either. Powerful continuous light also has its issues.
It all gets tiring and expensive rather quickly. So I mainly do photography.
>>2978014
>>2978015
I remember seeing this video explaining a scene from the movie Drive. This guy was going into detail and explaining how the director positions the camera and uses the angles, actors, and lighting to tell a story on top of what's being shown at face value. It was pretty interesting stuff.
Now, that's something I would have never even realized no matter how many times I'd watch the movie.
Does that make one form more complex than the other? The fact that with film making the details can (or have to be) subtle, whereas with photography it doesn't.
>>2978014 You say that a photograph is much more open to interpretation, which I agree with. I feel like a film is similar to a novel, where the author has a clear message he is trying to send and while there is some room for varying interpretations, it's still focused on narrative.
Been trying for hours, watching tutorials, still can't get the look I'm wanting. Any tips on how to achieve this look, pic related.

So I know that the cliché water blurring is a long exposure, usually with a GND in pic related. What I don't understand is how to keep the leaves in focus if there's a slight breeze, understanding that they move during the several seconds that you keep your shutter open. Is this all have to do with exposure blending or luminosity masking? It's all greek to me.
