How do I achieve pleasant colors with digital, /p/?
1. Use a camera with a large sensor.
2. Shoot in raw mode.
3. Git gud at post processing.
Crush the everloving shit out of the blacks.

This is a place to post about anything film related. Processing, scanning, developing, gear, etc is all fair game.

Nah seriously though, people keep telling me, " Look at photographers' work and then try to emulate whichever ones you most enjoy.", however I can't always be down at the library.

you can check books out of the library

WTF is with this guy saying Einstein is a moron ?
I think he actually has a lot of useful knowledge to share when it comes to gear but Goddamn, when he starts spouting physics shit and saying that known genius's are morons, i just cant deal with it. Sounds like he is just spouting memorized bullshit to make him sound like a genius.
What say you /p/ ?
He's a bit of a loon, yeah. Motherfucker actually believes that magnetism can distort the path of light in consumer lenses.
Deep space telescopes can perceive magnetic distortion and are calibrated for it, sure, but your 70-200 isn't going to be warped by the magnetism of the earth.
he also thinks that photons do not exist. Light is nothing more than electrical signal ? WTF ?he needs to spout that shit in front of any of the following

Leonard Susskind
Michio Kaku
Reinhardt Gensel
and on and on

4K and downsampled slow-motion 1080 wasn't enough, they had to shove their dick into downsampled 4K.
[[[But the photos still suck]]]
What are your best tips that do NOT involve using software or gear other than just your cam?
I usually hear about "get this software" or "carry a lamp," etc. I would like to hear tips for people who just carry their cam.
Mine would be:
-Look for unusual or interesting sights.
-Place your cam on an object and use the timer to avoid movement when you click.
-Talk to people. Sometimes, they are willing to humor you and pose in a specific way.
-When using models, have them talk about stuff that they care about, like their children or their dreams, or the last time they went out with their friends. They will be less self-concious and their smiles will be genuine.

-Have your subject lean forward when taking a portrait.
-use colorful balloons on your flashes for playing with colors instead of shilling out for color filters.
-use raw sparingly. You won't need it as much as you think if you shoot right.
-If you're ever shooting groups, just keep talking; saying directions, compliments, anything just run your mouth so they focus on you.
-to resolve camera shake shoot on continuous rapid fire.
>>3016650
Can you be clearer with your last point? I'm not sure I get it.
>>3016519
Mostly for snapshitting/"street"
-get closer to the subject
-fill the frame
-photographs capture a moment in time, that's what you should be looking for
-gear can help but it'll never make you a better photographer
-you can find inspiration outside of photography (books and music generally inspires me to shoot)
-this one might be weird but try reviewing your work or look at other people's works while high (I use weed and adderall (not at the same time)) it won't make you a better photographer but it might help you see things from a different perspective (always write down your thoughts!)
-everyone is different! no two people are exactly the same (this is more life advice but it helps)
-Instagram is home to a lot of great photographers, it might be populated with hipsters, gearfags, and VSCO nerds but you can find a lot of people who suit your style and you can learn from them
-there's no perfect camera or lens, peoples needs/likes are different. Just because you didn't like a camera doesn't mean someone else won't like it or won't take great images with it
-specs aren't everything. Good ISO performance, high megapixels, great glass, 4K video, good dynamic range, and fast autofocus will always lose the fight against shitty composition, bad lighting, and a boring subject
Hello. I'm new around here.
I just want to post some photos for critique, mostly composition-wise.
I'm a total beginner but over the last 6 months or so, I began to really enjoy taking what I felt were nice photos. I just want some feedback on the ones that I feel are just sort of the most aesthetically pleasing to me, and see what I could do better.
Like I said, i'm a total beginner, pretty much just took a lot for instagram. Most were done with an Iphone, but about half of these are with a crappy 8 year old Fujifilm point and shoot, fake dslr, great-for-the-family type camera. It was nice in that it was my first time to actually mess around with the manual setting.
What could I do to help improve my photos?

I shall issue a photographer's pardon if the majority of pictures shot are pornographic.

FUCK YOU
Jeez, I just wanna know how it works.
I was strolling down the street and took a snap of a post lady putting some mail in a slot. She IMMEDIATELY wheels around on me and starts freaking the fuck out declaring that it's a felony to take a picture of a federal agent doing their job.
You know, aside from being thrown out of a mall where over 50% of the stores are vacant at 10am when no one was fucking there, this probably ranks as one of the dumbest fucking times I've been berated at, kicked out, or fucking told I can't take a goddamned picture of something.
I went back and double checked the law, and all I got was laws on taking pictures of court houses and federal property - of which apparently around 2002 / 2003 there was a ruling that allowed this on some murky legal footing, but regardless people couldn't fucking command you to stop if you had a semi-decent reason outside of terrorism or some shit.
Point being there was nothing on "agents" or "federal employees." Kind of makes you wonder HOW WE HAVE SO MANY FUCKING MOVIES AND PICTURES OF BOTH STATE AND FEDERAL EMPLOYEES DOING THEIR JOBS HMM.
Anyone have the 100% answer on this or stories to share?
She's full of shit. You're allowed to take a photo of anyone doing anything in public as long as you don't physically interfere with the completion of their job. The ACLU has plenty of literature on the subject.
It's funny, because the department of homeland security issues memos on shit like this all of the time, and yet I constantly get misinformed federal employees rushing out of the back door of the Social Security building or the Federal courthouse to confront me. They're literally the only people who ever accost me. They must feel special and powerful.
Probably not all that useful, but maybe.

Your camera is haunted. Get rid out it now.
How do you deal with the fact that there are 50 million people just like you who want to make money from their art, of whom most are better than you, and that your work is not important whatsoever? Why not spend time learning a useful skill that is lucrative rather than pretending to love making $400 a month from photography? And, most specifically, the fact that you're lying to yourself if you believe you'd still be doing this if you weren't able to share your work or receive some type of praise for your work?
This is in no way trying to harass those of you who love photography; the process, the results. This is only a quandary that I've began to ponder.
When you think of photography as living beings using highly advanced tools that transpose light onto a sensor or negative to freeze a point in time, I just think of it as a clinically insane waste of time. Why do I do this, do I think my "vision" is special when almost every photographic vision has been exhausted, except for maybe fringe, avante-garde, post-modern approaches to photography that give even a greater reason to question why we do what we do.
This doesn't apply to just photography, but art in general I guess. I know phrasing it in this manner may be problematic for some here with even a smidgen of an artistic ego, but statistically, your work is worth nothing and does not explore anything new.
I love photography, I love that we are able to document the experience of life, a documentation that may be crucial to later civilizations. But aside from the documentary use, I can't see why any photography really matters. This realization has really affected my love of photography but I continue to do it, maybe out of my ego or maybe it's a process I truly enjoy, but it hurts.
Honestly I just wanna know if anyone has gone thru this artistically, and has it affected your ability to get out and do it.
>>3019685
in a way, your post reminds me of this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8G9QIIvSpzE
And to answer your question, I think you have a very narrow view of photography. There's so many ways to make money doing photography: Workshops, prints, salaried position, art fairs, portraits, weddings, sports, etc. And if someone else can do it, why not you? There are photographers out there that suck, but are making a living. Hell! I was out in La Jolla yesterday, there were 3 new photography galleries put in since the last time I visited, and Im not even kidding, I would be FUCKING EMBARASSED to even post the photos they had on instagram, let alone print it 5 feet tall in the front window of a high end art area. Someone else can do it, why not me?
As far as my downsides go, I make up too many excuses. My newest one is that I need to conserve my money, and driving around looking for photos to take would really siphon money fast
>>3019685
That's, like, an extremely artfaggy point of view.
"Nobody" cares about your special butterfly photographic vision unless you're good with bullshit sales pitches, yes. Of course, IF you are good at bullshit sales pitches to artfags on the consumer side, then I guess you have customers. There is a saddening amount of people who want to be inspired special butterflies.
However, if we're talking about some honestly earned money: Do you seriously think product photos are useless now? These are still strongly determining what price tag companies can put on a product.
Likewise for marriage and important event photos. Private and business customers exist for these. CV photos and so on also still are in demand. And a lot more.
youre a complete faggot, OP.
