Hey guys, got some new pics for ya. It's been about 5 years or so but I finally made it back to Hong Kong and Japan. Only spent 3 days in HK so I don't have nearly as many pictures as I did last time I was there, but I'm more or less happy with what I have.
There were a few snags however. First, I hadn't done this kind of medium format night city photography in a while so I was a bit rusty. I generally meter by eye in these situations and it seems my eye needed a bit of practice, so a lot of my shots were underexposed a bit which led to them being grainier than I'd have liked. I'll post a few of those toward the end so you can see what I mean.
Second, I only shot 645 Portra and my Ricoh GR digital here. Generally it was GR during the day and 645 at night. This was fine, but I came across a few housing developments during the day which I was hoping to add to my 'modern living' series, and figured the GR would work fine for this. I was wrong. Long story short, the very fine and dense tiling on the facade of a lot of these buildings did not play nice with the GR's sensor given its lack of an AA filter, so they're basically covered in moire and probably totally unusable. I'm going to try to pick a few that I really like and spend a lot of time cleaning them up but I don't have a lot of hope that they're going to turn out all that great. Really disappointed with this. Again, I'll post a couple at the end so you can see what I mean.
As always with my photo threads I like to use /p/ as a sort of staging environment for other photo sites to see what people like and what they don't, so I post a lot of the B and C sides here that wouldn't normally see the light of day. So what helps me out the most is pointing out which pictures you really like and which you really don't. Of course don't let this stop anyone from telling me to kill myself and sell my camera as well.
Going to start off with some film shots. Hope you enjoy.

Guys, i have a Sony Nex 5 with the basic 18/55 lens. I did a lot of portraits with it and landscapes, cool stuff....but now i feel i need to get a better camera or lens.
I'd like something not too heavy, which is why i started with a Sony Nex.
The budget is not really a question, just...not over the top.
What can you recommend?
Thanx in advance
>>3079382
btw i love wide angle lenses too.
>>3079382
"not over the top"
to some people this means $250 lenses, to others it's $750 lenses. Money is subjective.
decide what direction you want to go with your lenses, stick to primes or a set of pro zooms, latest autofocus or will old manual focus stuff actually keep you happy.
Personally, I'd ditch the nex 5 and get either an a7 (if autofocus isn't important at all) or the a7ii if you want more of an all-rounder. The larger sensor will give you more options for wide angle lenses, have better low light performance, build quality is massively improved, the evf is magical and you will have sharper images with smoother bokeh.
Lenses, that's up to personal preference.
Pay a lot and get the Sony GM stuff
Pay less and get the Sony mid range primes (28 f2, 85 1.8 and either the 50 or 55 1.8)
Pay very little and get old manual focus shit (you get what you pay for with older lenses, there's no such thing as a "bargain" vintage lens)
Hit some sort of midground with a sigma mc11 (only if you have a7ii/a6300 or better) and older canon L glass, the 70-200 f4 non is and 17-40 L are incredibly cheap if you ppick up a good deal.
That's the joy of Sony, there's something with good performance for every budget.
>>3079397
Yeah sorry, i probably should have been more specific about the price. Over the top for me would be $1000.
Thanks for the advices, i will look into those.
So you don't think i really need to go against Sony, and choose a Canon or Nikon?
Hi,
In the preparation of the shooting of a short film, we will shoot in Red Scarlett. I have found that on outdoor testing, the image grows much green. Would you enlighten me to filter all that green?
>>3079349
put a red and blue filter on it duh.
just get a sony if you're too dumb.
>>3079349

Lol, just get a real videographer noob.
While usually not the right aporoach, you're shooting on a RED so just fix it in post when you color grade it
How do you landscape guys get into state parks and such to catch a sunrise when most of them don't open til 8ish? I want to photograph some texas hill country stuff but most land here is private so my only option is public parks and their stupid hours. I can't camp overnight.

I'm starting out in photography. I'm interested in mirrorless cameras because of the benefits I've read about. I need to know what some good books are to buy for beginners. Surely anything I could learn from a class I could learn on my own for cheaper. I know I have talent and a good eye for composition. What I need to learn is technical, processing, and printing.
Also would pic related be a good camera to start with? It comes with a 45-150mm lense 2 batteries and 2 chargers. Is this a good deal?
>>3083204
Yeah, it's a pretty good deal. However, I'd say see if you can find a used sony a6000. I would reccomend a canon t3i with a kit lens and a 50mm if you're open to getting something that's not mirrorless. Reason being, olympus isn't a very big brand, which means there wont be a lot of third party support in terms of lens selection.
Be wary, you're going to get memed hard against Sony on this board.
>>3083208
Thanks for the response. Sony and Fuji have peaked my interest on this board so far.
>>3083210
Fuji seems to have some good stuff, I've seen nothing but good stuff from them. Sony has just seemed to be on a streak lately.
But yeah, I'd check out the sony a6000, it's sonys best selling camera of all time
Sup /p/
How safe, or unsafe, is it to take my a7 out in a light rain? Obviously nothing heavy, but I feel uncomfortable having it out even in a drizzle.
Also does anybody use any sort of weather proofing? What do you use and how do you like it?

You could use an umbrella or very cheap chinese-made camera bag.
But I don't think I'd think very much about using it in light rain. It'll probably be fine.
>>3082920
Yeah, the longer I've had it the more I think it'll be okay in some rain. I'm just no in a financial position to ruin a camera body right now, but I do want to take some street photos in the rain.
I guess I'll never know until I try? I just haven't heard much about people shooting in some rain.

D5500 vs D5600 is it worth the upgrade? The D5500 is on sale but im not sure
You know that Nikon's site has a literal "compare cameras" function, right?
>>3077472
I know but i've read it but im curious about it being hands on. I wanna know if its just worth it
D5500 offers a fancy red color.
D5600 has bluetooth while the other one does not. That is the only difference. Bluetooth allows you to use the app to remote control with it. Hardly a critical feature. Everything else between the two cameras is literally identical.
Hey /p/, back again with some recent night shits, i actually tried to add a person in a few of the photos, but still mostly concerned about overall tone and color

any /jp/ oldfriends around here happen to be familiar with what kinds of gear were used by gravure photographers around the tail end of the film era? not looking to replicate gear setups, just curious about workflow. I'm guessing 645, slide film or Portra? Primes or zooms?
I know the 1D series was adopted almost immediately when it hit.
post more for reference reasons
I'll almost guarantee it was slide, simply because positive film was easier to turn into print in those days.

One thing you can't be sure of is if the bellows don't leak any light. You'd at least need to check for pinhole leaks on your own.
