Someone posted this pic as an example of great composition. Could somebody explain why?
The shapes and contrast don't really lead my eye through the scene and I can't make out any interesting geometric shapes, leading lines, whatever. Just looks like a plain old B&W picture with a dutch angle to me.
What am I missing here?
FUCK, attached wrong pic.

I prefer the first pic, OP.
Will it ever be a thing? Will old DSLRs ever become collectors items for reasons beyond novelty?

How will Canons competition compete against such innovations?
by offering better products but worse gestalt and still getting blown the fuck out in sales volume and professional use.

I remember when photographers thought articulating LCD was such an amateur feature that didn't belong on professional-tier cameras

It's impressing how the body is EXACTLY the same as the mark1, except for this abortion of articulated screen.
Fuck, I'm unhyped about it. Gotta give my mony on sony instead.
https://youtu.be/xxGl9Tl6Sao
Can we skip the "Sony sucks" and dive into the technical aspect of this. I really want to understand this. Why is this still happening? Generation after generation and they can't fix this problem? Why? Why doesn't any other brand have this issue? Why won't Sony ever take steps to truly fix it? So far all they've done is updates to increase max temp rating, but that just leads to a camera that gets too hot to hold in your hands. Couldn't a simple change to the body composition fix this? Or even a small surface area increase. I don't get it.
other than including tiny ass micro fans, sony could simply have better air flow by either opening up gaps or making the body larger, OR make more efficient firmware for processors and/or sensors, whichever is heating up as their on-time is ridiculous.
idk why and how they can't fix a simple design flaw being a huge company.

Is the mamiya a good option for 450 bucks with lenses and acessories?
Ive never been good at getting good shots of people, and I want to improve. I feel like I lower people's self esteem with my crappy shots of people making people look ugly, when they're expecting good self portraits of their self espicially when they're being tooken with a camera that looks expensive to the person being shot. I've never been a people person so that might contribute to my lack of inexperience. Please give honest feedback.

First thing you should do is just to keep shooting, and to look at lots of portraits and analyze them to see what you like about them. Take a number of frames one after the other when you're shooting a portrait, but do it quickly enough that the subject doesn't get bored. Then pick the one that looks best and try to figure out why you like it.
In this photo, I probably would have had her step a couple of steps to camera left so that she was centered in the frame, but the stream was still visible. The photo is unbalanced with her way over to the side.
On overcast days, the light tends to fall straight down on people and shadows tend to hang around their features, which isn't flattering. You can use a reflector to bounce light from below and minimize this, or have them lift their chin so their face is more evenly lit, or find some naturally reflective body in the area to use.
>>3085965
Thanks a lot man. I'll really take your advice into affect next time I shoot. I'll be able to shoot people more confidently now.
I really wanted to get into photography, but my budget wasn't very high. I bought a sony a350 from craigslist, and have been using it the past few months but have begun to feel self conscious. I feel like I'm shooting on some outdated piece of shit that is ultimately going to waste my time. I understand high megapixels are really only important when printing but I still feel like shooting on a ten year old camera just isn't right.
tl;dr can decent photos be taken with an old dslr and why should I/when should I invest in a better camera?

Yes decent shots can be taken, at one point old DSLRs were The Thing to get. A tool is only as useful as you can make it in your hands. Get a new DSLR when you have mastered your current. I was on a Kodak Point and Shoot for YEARS man, 5 megapixels, but I still tried to get the best I could with the tools I had.
>>3084622
Just curious why were they the thing to get? I understand old film cameras but why outdated DSLRs?
>>3084600
Don't shoot at 1600iso if possible
megapixels aren't that important, just get some good sharp lenses, probably a few old primes, and go to town with the basics
Hey, NatureGuy here, book will be late. I had a lot of stuff come up in personal life that has trashed my time to work on stuff, including photos. Work will be over the school year next week and the show I've been prepping for since Febuary will be done the week after so I'll have plenty of time to finish it up by mid-June.
Shit sux, sorry.

No clouds makes focus stacking possible, which is nice. Photoshop seems occasionally confused by reflections though.

Quit posting make the book we're almost halfway through the year
Hi /p/
So I went to Northern Ireland when I had a few days off last month, and created a small body of work about the remaining peace walls separating Loyalist Protestant and Republican Catholic neighborhoods. There are about 100 of these designated "Interface Points" in the six counties, with the majority of them being in Belfast.
I'm currently finalizing my edit, dusting the negs, and shopping it around to a few editors I know, either as a printable story or as a precursor to some more projects I'm hoping to produce in the summer.
C&C welcome. I will try to add captions and pertinent info as I go.
This image was in North Belfast, in a Loyalist area. My caption info notes are elsewhere so I can't tell you exactly what street, but this is relatively new construction (since 98), and the wall has been built up from a lower concrete structure into this. Often the walls are built in this fashion, with each addition getting thinner and serving different purposes. The highest points are almost always this type of fencing, which sits high enough to prevent bottles or balloons full of paint from being thrown but eliminates the danger of collapse by allowing airflow.

Cluan Place can be seen as an island of Loyalism inside of a densely populated Republican stronghold in East Belfast. Bordered on two sides by thoroughfares that are used by the working class Republicans in surrounding neighborhoods
and butting up to the Short Strand neighborhood on its other sides, it is home to only a few dozen homes and residents and has been a flashpoint for sectarian violence for decades. It's residents refuse to forfeit any ground to Republicans and likewise oppose most non-sectarian potential residents, leading to a dwindling population and unoccupied homes.
Side note for those interested: All images were Hasselblad 501c with either 50mm, 80mm, or 120mm. The first was 120mm and this is the 80mm. I shot exclusively Portra 400, all handheld, Lightmeter was a Sekonic 758. I've mentioned previously I don't carry a bag just a great jacket with pockets and a few belt pouches from ThinkTank.

>>3082227
I do what I'd call a fair amount of adjustments, multiple s curves and painting contrast with a soft light layer, but I enjoy a muted palette and a flat image, especially concerning this sort of work. The banality of the situation was something I wanted to highlight across the entire spectrum, from my exclusion of people to waiting for overcast times (not hard in NI). The post I did is evident here from a flat file to my print ready final. Scans are on a V700 using Alex Burke's guidelines.
This is a wall in Alexandra Park. It cuts the public park in half, with roads that formerly facilitated foot traffic and bicycles being closed. There is one gate that is opened in the day time only, so at night the only access for movement is to circumvent the entire park.
