/out/ I'm going to be purchasing a popup camper next week, a used 2002 starcraft. I've never owned a popup before. Any tips maintenance tips? Things I should bring with me when I use it?

Opinions are mixed. Unless you have young children, people will tell you to just get a tent or refurbish an airstream. On the one hand they're okay, but on the other they're shit and don't come with a toilet which the the only good part of a camper.

Friend of mine ripped off a corner jack first trip /out/.

A Coleman, its really nice, deluxe actually.

But a 12 man canvas pyramid tent is far more portable and far cheaper.

It's all up to what you want, there is no bad way /out/, unlike the elitist fags will tell you.

Make sure you bring a spare winder (The thing you use to wind it up/down) in your car as well as your trailer. At very least find some tools eg spanners that fit the slot so if you lose yours you can still wind it up/down. Ridiculous to mention, probably, but trust me losing it half way through a road trip with no spare is a horrible experience, had to make some amalgamation of tire iron and spanner

i've heard nothing but horror stories about these. They are prone to leaking, ripping, falling apart etc. basically they are marketed to people who have some cash to blow but can't afford the next step up. like i said all ive ever heard from people who bought one is they had to fix a bunch of shit just to be able to re sell it because it just kept breaking in one way or another. they don't retain value, and just get more and more fucked up until you put it in your back yard forever.

I've had quite a few family members purchase pop ups, I've slept in a bunch of different ones myself. There's been probably 5 or 6 pop ups between my friends and family. Not one of them had any complaints.

You can buy almost any used pop up for under 3K, and sell it in a few years for the same amount.

Yes, new ones don't hold value, but once they get a few years old, they hold their value indefinitely. I had a few friends buy a pop up for like $1000, use it for 2 uears, and then sold it for $1200.

Yes a tent works too, but a pop up is cheap, and doubles as a trailer to haul all the shit you bring glamping. You also get multiple dry, comfortable beds, possible air conditioning, and heat.

I can second this. I grew up using a mid 80s, then a mid 90s, starcraft popup for family trips. Used 'em probably 6ish times a year all through the 80s until 2003. They are more comfortable than a tent, and if properly cared for, will last a damn long time. Most care I remember is "make sure shits dry before you store it for more than a day or two" and "set it up every few months to make sure critters arent setting up shop in it".

After moving halfway across the country, and leaving our mid 90s one with family who didn't use it and take care of it, it fell apart, which was a shame. They had it stored on some property in the middle of nowhere, and didn't really do much with it, and mice got into it and tore the whole thing to pieces.

When actually traveling with it, it had tons of extra storage space, and having an attached screen patio was really nice if you were in a place with lots of insects.

I know a pop-up is something I'm looking at getting once I get a house with enough space to store it.
