Every time I come across a bear on the trail I pull my camera out to try and get a good picture. Inevitably, when I start to approach, the bear will notice me and run off like a bitch.

Self defense while /out/ should only be a concern if there are other humans in the area. I bring a shotgun car camping. A handgun would prob be better for when I go backpacking, but sadly I'm a canacuck.

I'll take the treat seriously when the majority of people realize that, every single time they drive on a public road, they are putting themselves in harms way to a greater extent that most anything else they do in their entire lives. Lightening is a much bigger concern. The more metal objects you carry, the more it heightens the risk of being struck, which is far more common than bear attacks. Humans just have a genetically ingrained fear of being the prey, rather than the predator.

You should check with fish and game in Alaska, they'd greatly say other wise (Alaska likes to keep track of that sort of shit) Full grown grizzly and moose have been taken out with 9mm, 45. I carried a Buck 119 and bear spray. I had some close encounters but nothing too dangerous. If I carried a firearm I would have probably ended up killing a couple bears for what turned out to be no reason.

I spend a lot of time in the bush still, usually with my dog but often alone. I carry a Buck 110 knockoff I've had for sometime. Not as much for protection as for collecting.
