What do you autists carry for defence innawoods? Let's face it, you're all alone out there, you need to have something that's capable of killing pretty much anything that may fuck with you.

I chose a big enough utility knife. I'm way too lazy/poorfag to buy a gun (Canada) and a Ka-Bar short is more than enough to put me on level footing with a black bear. Of course I have a small thing of mace, too.

well if im with a larger group in, lets say norways "fjeld" (mountains, i guess) a satelite phone? but even that is way over the top considering the cost and what it would actually help.

"defence" i would sat would be more feeling for if you are developing blisters, or when you need to take a break

I have full sized pic related in d2. I like the leather handles much better. I have never used it. Too big. The pilot's survival knife is much handier. Sold my 1095 version to a vertical engineer who was about to be deployed. He said his buddies made fun of it for the whole deployment.

since i'm a 6' tall male and the only predators in my area are easily-buffaloed black bears and mountain lions i don't need to carry anything heavier than my voice.
>>
>>18789
They don't
>>
>>18786
Throughout history, Black bears have killed way more people by trichinosis than by attacks. In Soviet Russia, you first eat bear, then he kill you.
>>
Every time I come across a bear on the trail I pull my camera out to try and get a good picture. Inevitably, when I start to approach, the bear will notice me and run off like a bitch.

Self defense while /out/ should only be a concern if there are other humans in the area. I bring a shotgun car camping. A handgun would prob be better for when I go backpacking, but sadly I'm a canacuck.

Bear spray if you're really worried about animals. A knife is silly.

Average American Caucasian is 5'11". Is your ego so large that it skews your perception so that feel that you are a bigger man for it?

I'm just fuckin wit cha. My state has two bears in the wild. I'd love to see one /out/.
>>
>>18820
I don't wanna be a bitch, but the leather sheath would make it worth it. The Elk hunter, I might do, but the sheath with rod is what drives your knife home as a bushcrafter.
>>
>>18822
What if I threw in the $30 so you could order one?
>>
>>18821
my state has a high proportion of mexicans, which draws the average down. it also has lots of black bears, and some retards are actually pushing to reintroduce grizzlies.

>>18819
that's a good looking knife.
>>
>>18823
I'd do it right now IRL, but I'm an impulse buyer. That's why I have so many unused knives. My hard on would go away during shipping.

I had to look at your knife's website, and I was pretty impressed. I've got a knife made from a crosscut saw blade in about the same pattern and thickness, which I actually use.

That K-bar was only $50 when I bought it in 2008. Didn't look to see what they go for now.

desu man, bears run upwards of 30 fucking miles an hour. Even Usain Bolt can't outrun a bear. If it doesn't back off from mace or gunshots I'd have a better chance of stabbing it and writing Kabar a letter about how I "k a bar" with their knife.

I'll take the treat seriously when the majority of people realize that, every single time they drive on a public road, they are putting themselves in harms way to a greater extent that most anything else they do in their entire lives. Lightening is a much bigger concern. The more metal objects you carry, the more it heightens the risk of being struck, which is far more common than bear attacks. Humans just have a genetically ingrained fear of being the prey, rather than the predator.

Have you seen the vid of the sloth bear eating the farmers face off? They shoot it to death with rifles over 10 mins of it eating a dude. Good luck. I wonder if you've ever been in a fight? Have you been punched in the face? If you have, maybe just maybe you can imagine that fist being 2-3 times as big with claws, attached to 600 lbs of fuck your shit up. Now imagine the bear charges you, you get a couple shots off, then it runs into you full speed swiping clawing and biting. Even if it only takes 30 seconds for the bear to die from your shots, that's plenty of time for it to fuck your shit up bad enough that you wont recover.

You should check with fish and game in Alaska, they'd greatly say other wise (Alaska likes to keep track of that sort of shit) Full grown grizzly and moose have been taken out with 9mm, 45. ACP and .44 and 10mm (Most pistol kills is done with the .45 acp and 10mm). A lot of those animals were charging too, not even from 50 feet away. I'm not talking about mag dumping either, only a shot or two was enough to kill it.

Funny how there is groups that study this shit (Fish and game, hunters, loads of others) they will post all data and proof of what they say. Yet instead of ppl reading this shit, they act like retards (Talking about you) they just end up talking out of their ass (Which you're doing)

Some rounds won't penetrate deep enough to hit vital organs like the heart and lungs (shooting from the front, nit side). 9mm ballpoint to the head, even if it did not penetrate, is still delivering a shit ton of kinetic energy, enough so that it can still kill it.

The biggest problem is people don't train with their shit. That and with the adrenaline that is rushing through you, it is very easy to miss at 5 yards (Look at police reports, there is plenty were some one shot 15 times at a target only 20 feet away, missed every shot)

In the end, you're a dumbass who doesn't know his shit, never bothering to learn his shit, will continue to be just that...which is shit. So plz, kill yourself faggot.

HA, in fact didntt you recently straight up ban Adler shotguns? literally the slowest and least practical weapon on the market in the US right now, because it was too "High capacity" and "Rapid fire" when lever action is one of the slowest actions, only slower than bolt action or single shot. Source http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-10-21/adler-shotgun-import-ban-remains-in-place/7954920

Dont people go to literal jail for YEARS because of scary illegal bb guns? Or paintball guns? Shit so not dangerous the only way you can get hurt is if you shoot yourself in the eye from inches away? Source http://beforeitsnews.com/alternative/2017/03/australia-man-arrested-faces-20-years-sentence-for-printing-a-replica-gun-3483864.html
Any kind of autoloading rifle BANNED, any kind of handgun above 9mm BANNED, and 9mm or below you can only have for pre scheduled handgun shooting matches, and you have to leave them in the range safe

Yeah, you can totally own guns, Get the fuck out of here aussie.

Except australia leads by a LARGE margin in rapes, burglaries, auto theft (Adjusted for population AND total number), drug use, total crime victims per 100k, assault, property crime, suicide rates, and all of this correlates DIRECTLY to when the australian government institutes harsher gun laws and gun buy backs. Harsher gun laws=higher crime rates.

One of the only stats where Australia wins is in gun crime, which makes sense since you cant own guns.

Fellow Canadian here. This lever gat is 29" long. With some buffalo bore hard cast 45 colt running in it. Perfect hiking gun (for Canadians) barely 5 pounds when it's loaded

honestly never worried about critters of the 4 legged variety, they tend to be live and let live

2 legged critters on the other hand, they tend to be the ones you gotta worry about. Honestly the only thing I'm ever legitimately worried about running into in the woods.

You sound salty m8. You can still own guns despite the regulation. I hope you felt it was worth it to get side tracked about very reasonable regulations

I don;t need no weapon because I'm a real man. Go tell everyone you had to shoot a bear and see how unimpressed they are.

I go diving all the time around Ocala and have some relatives that live up there. It's really nice and the people are really nice, mostly old folks and people with horses. John Travolta has a house up there and that's just about all the crazy that is up there

I have my Ka-Bar and sometimes a Ruger Super Redhawk chambered in .44 Remington Magnum. Or you know, a spear, if the need arises. The woods are full of them.
>>
>>18924
Redhawks are ugly as shit, but they're tough as hell, and accurate. You can handload for them with .44 mag 300 grain rifle data. The only other revolvers that can do that are the Colt Anaconda and the Super Blackhawk Hunter.

I mean, thats not a hard fix, but thats pretty shitty.

True, but it's not something you're going to do innawoods. You'd want something that needs as little maintenance as possible, like the Redhawk or a Glock of something similar to that.

gun or you're wasting money/pack space and weight.
you've fucked up if a bear is charging you. once they're within 30 feet your chance of survival drastically decreases, given, they aren't grizzlies but still.

>>18868
if it even fell on you, you'd risk death.
they get slashed/bit by other bears when they fight and it only makes them angry.
heaven forbid it's babies are around, the things are known to keep going for the kill even with the pain of a gunshot(assuming it hit a non-vital) if you get near it's young accidentally.

>>18787
is correct, bears and most other threats are best avoided via common sense in the first place although a gun doesn't hurt to have if you can legally do so.

The phrase is "Always prepared", not "Only prepared when you know in advance what will happen."
>>
>>18786
I live in the Kingdom of England. We are civilised here.
>>
>>18946
Well, I agree. And you do know that if there are no bears in the area, you're not going to meet a bear. Therefore, you do not have to have weapons on you at all times.
>>
>>18948
>>18946
Firearms are fucking heavy is my point, and you shouldn't carry one unless you abolutely have to. "always prepared" applies more to things like knives and ponchos and shit. You know, things that don't weigh that much. Things that aren't in the way when you're out and about.
>>
>>18908
Non-restricted? How much is it?
>>
>>18949
A 9mm handgun can weigh as little as 1.5 pounds loaded with 15 rounds. Thats less than a hatchet. A 10mm Glock 20 weighs less than 2 pounds loaded. A fully loaded 12 gauge shotgun is less than 7 pounds. Guns arent heavy, especially compared to the rest of your camping gear.

"Always prepared" Means always prepared for something that might happen, including being responsible for your own safety concerning people, or animals. What is dosent mean is make crap excuses why you dont want be responsible for your own safety in a life and death situation.
>>
>>18951
always be prepared=/=live in crippling fear of extremely improbable scenarios
>>
>>18952
Ah yes, the "Why u so scurred" argument. Taking responsibility for your own safety and carrying an extra 2 pounds on your hip. Thousands of people go missing in state parks every year, if there is a possibility it could happen, you should be prepared for it.

Next time make a real argument not shitty ad hominem attacks.
>>
>>18951
Guns are heavy, as in, they add more, usually unnecessary weight to the gear you're already carrying.

>>18952
This motherfucker got it right.
>>
>>18953
Knowing the area you're in is worth 10 000 times as much as any weapon.
>>
>>18955

Any kind of wilderness has animals that can hurt. Any where on EARTH has people that can hurt you. Theres not a single spot on earth where an extra <2 pounds outweighs the potential problems in not having it.
>>
>>18953
>Thousands of people go missing in state parks every year,
source?

and even assuming that your claim is true, ca alone has 75,000,000 state park visitors per year, so your "thousands" nationwide is a small enough percentage it's not something i'm worried about. it's more dangerous to drive to the park than it is to hike in the park.

and becuase i'm not a hysterical exagerator about my bogeymen, my source for 75,000,000 annual visitors: http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/795/files/14-15%20Statistical%20Report%20-%20INTERNET.pdf
>>

>>18958

>>
>>18953
>>18957
and i forget to include the obvious question of how many of the missing would not be missing if they had a gun? i'm guessing <100.
>>
>>18959
Nice use of the latin language. Still not an argument, though.
>>
>>18953
>>18957
>>18960
also also, missing=/=not found

i live near lots of state park land and every year we have dozens of people go missing, but i honestly don't remember the last death. it's always moron city people who wander 200' of trail, get lost and benighted, and are found, alive, withing the next 1-3 days.
>>
>>18957
>>18960
>>18962
A.) Source your own information, like a responsible citizen of the world
B.) saying a firearms wouldnt make a difference in the vast majority of cases isnt an argument, the same can be said of wearing a seatbelt when you drive, but they are required by law because when they are needed, they save lives.
>>18961
Ad Hominem: a logical fallacy in which an argument is rebutted by attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the person making the argument, or persons associated with the argument, rather than attacking the substance of the argument itself.

You dont have any more shit arguments, so you call me names instead of recognizing your a faggot who cant handle the responsibility of their own safety.
>>
>>18963
a) you're making the absurd claim, so you need to provide the evidence. can you imagine a lawyer going into court and telling the judge to look up some preposterous lie?
b) nice false analogy. https://www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/seatbeltbrief/
and considering having a gun would make a difference in literally 0.0000% of the times people visit state parks, i'd say that's a valid argument.
>>
>>18964
Your not a lawyer, im not in court, we're both anonymously posting on a tibetan fingerpainting forum, claiming that guns are needed in literally 0% of instances is completely false. Why? because if there has even been even one instance where someone was hurt by another human being or animal EVER, you would be wrong in making that statement. Which has happened, so you are wrong.
>>
When I used to survey I worked in remote areas in N. Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and B.C. Lots of helicopter work with a dicey sat phone as my only means of communication.

I carried a Buck 119 and bear spray. I had some close encounters but nothing too dangerous. If I carried a firearm I would have probably ended up killing a couple bears for what turned out to be no reason.

I spend a lot of time in the bush still, usually with my dog but often alone. I carry a Buck 110 knockoff I've had for sometime. Not as much for protection as for collecting.
>>
>>18965
>he doesn't know about significant figures
but since you're being pedantic
(100 cases)/(700,000,000 visitors)=0.00001%
i'll take that risk
but really, fi you're that concerned about those odds you should be wearing a life vest everywhere, since there are roughly 3500 annual drowning deaths in the u.s, which translates to 0.1%
>>
>>18967
People who fret about being killed by Bad Hombres and fantasize about what they would do should put half that energy and thought into their lifestyle.

Chances are, you aren't going to die from a bear or Bad Hombre. But you will probably die from cancer, heart disease, complications due to hypertension, diabetes, etc.

If you want to life longer, avoid premature death, and, more importantly, have a better quality of life as you get older... you should go to the gym and eat properly.

But no, it's more exciting and fun to amass firearms and prepare for that home invasion, which will prove all the naysayers and people who called you a nut wrong.

lol priorities
