Depends on the season and conditions. Light weight nylon for 40-45F and above. Wool for 40 F and below. Also synthetic long john bottoms paired with either material depending on temps.
>>
Bespoke selvedge outdoorsman's jeans.
>>
Synthetic or cotten/synthetic blend like G1000.

Cotton is the worst material for outdoor pants.

Depending on climate and terrain, I wear Fjallraven, Berghaus or some light Patagonia pants.

Cheap
Made to hide blood and prevent bacteria from growing in nooks and crannies.

Bought me some generic military pants for super cheap at a surplus store. They are rugged, have a million pockets and places to clip things, and they have built in ties for the waste and ankles so that bugs and shit don't get in.

I just have a couple pairs of gander mountain guide series trailhead convertible nylon cargo pants. I have been pretty happy with them, they dry very quickly and it is nice to be able to unzip them into shorts if it gets warm. They are also decently warm if you wear some good under leggings when it is chillier out. The only thing I don't like is the same issue I have with most synthetics...I always worry about sitting to close to the fire and melting them.

>Cotton is the worst material for outdoor pants.
Not true, my Pinewood Hastings trousers are made of cotton canvas which is a great material, it's just trendy and a meme to think if you wear cotton you'll die of hypothermia. Your pants might be uncomfortable when wet in cold conditions but you'd have to be in some real cold area without fire for it to be dangerous.
>>
>>18287
I'd wear these too if I weren't so retardedly insecure about my appearance
>>
Sweatpants everyday, baby. I live in Canada, and yet I'm the only person I know that chooses them over those papery-ass uncomfy-ass jeans.
>>
>>18297
None. Better shave all the hair off your body, too.

>Not true
Not true.
This lady's and gentlemen is why you should always take advice from random annons on the internet with a grain of salt.
Cross reference and fact check as best possible.
Cotton is fine in the summer. When you're not expecting to get wet or if you will have the opportunity/time to dry off before night.
For my area & cnoditions its totally inappropriate. I would personally opt for other materials even in the summer.
>>
I wear these cotton/poly flecktarn surplus pants from the kommando store, little bit gay maybe but they are comfy, dry pretty quickly, and were very cheap.

>>18299
>you'll die of hypothermia
That's just the extreme case anon. What's going to happen a lot more is being wet, cold and miserable, which is bad enough by itself.

Btw. I heard that canvas is faster drying and less abrasive than denim.

Completely agree.
There are better material choices than cotton.

Pity all the best choices for temperature/moisture control all suck ass when it comes to abrasion resistance.

In summer I wear lightweight polyester shorts, in the winter I wear the same with polyester longjohns under them or just polar fleece pants. If it rains I can just put waterproof overtrousers on.

Here in NZ the weather is very changeable so you have to dress as if you'll get wet on any trip. This makes cotton inappropriate year round.

I wear synthetic tricot stubbies...

I think you call them ranger panties in the US.
>>
Honestly as long as its comfy, gives good ease of movement from when your walking and going in upward motions, doesn't look horrible and dries relatively fast then then that's all you need.

Pros
> Cheap as hell, $6-15 for decent pants
>Light as hell
> Folds to nothing, basically like a shirt.
>Surprisingly warm for how thin they are.
>Comfy
>convinent for me because I wear them at work and have a bunch.
>You can get them in pretty much any color.

Cons
>Some rip easily
>Usually not waterproof
>Not all season. Good for summer to keep ticks off.
>No standard hip pockets in most pants, they're pretty loose on the side of the leg just above the knee.

Dickies are on the expensive side but are really nice. But at that price get cheap hiking pants. It's enough where I can like in the summer comfortably. I basically live in them anyway.

Two options for cheap wool pants:
*suit pants from good will
*military surplus

Wool shoes do exist. One option for that is a kind of Russian wool felt boot which I believe they typically wear with a rubber galosh. They're called valenkis, or something.

>>18335
The only wool pants I have are Swedish army ones that I've modified to have none of the army shit on them. They're probably 22-24oz of grey melton wool and they're heavy and warm as fuck, unless it's freezing it's too cold to wear them unless all you're sure you're never going to be doing anything physical.

I would love some strong but mid weight whipcord or melton wool pants, but they're just not out there or else they cost a fuckload.
>>
Have been using my fjällräven pants for the last couple of years, breaths well and are pretty sturdy. When camping in northern sweden getting wet is not an option so I always carry lightweight rainpants as well. I have found its more important to avoid sweating too much than to have fast drying water resistant pants. You will never get water proof and breathable at the same time anyway.

Here's my old carharts after a few seasons camping with them. Got awful stains, holes started wearing through at seat pockets and ankles, not enough pockets. Stayed wet forever. They had lots of great heavy stitched belt loops that's about it.

I wear fishing pants almost exclusively. The type you can zip at the knees. You can getbthem for 5 dollars at second hand stores. They are light, abrasion resistant, water repellant, and breathable.
>>
>>18346
I wear the same pants for work. Way too heavy for hiking though, I just like them because the seams don't come apart like newer levis work jeans. For out I have a pair of lightweight poly-blend Patagonia pants I got for cheap at a thrift store. Wear thick wool long johns underneath for warmth. Lasted ~ a dozen nights in the woods since I bought them a couple months ago. They're light enough they'll probably be good in summer as well.
