>Never really been /out/ before
>Read Bear Bear Grylls's book
>He climbed mount Everest at 21, I've just turned 27 and done nothing
>Decide I will "climb" mount Snowdon
>Parents start panicking saying I need tons of equipment and training to take a jaunty walk up a gradual slope for 3 hours. And how I've never done any serious walking in my life.

Are they just being fucking retarded. If old people and children do it then I'm sure I can.

And when I google pictures of snowdon I don't see people with tons of specialise equipment they're just wearing shirts and trainers.
>>
Ok so what's the point of this thread
>>
>>17953
Do they have a point or not?
>>
>>17952

Are you too pussy for Ben Nevis via CMD Arete or something?
>>
>>17955
Well I thought I'd ease into it.
>>
No you don't need special equipment, and frankly their attitude is probably part and parcel of why you haven't accomplished much. Your 27. Time to make your own fucking decisions and stop listening to mommy and daddy or seeking validation from anons before you go take a fucking walk outside. Just bring a day pack with water, food, a small first-aid kit, and while you're searching for those why don't you see if you can find your balls so they can finally drop and you can stop being a fucking manchild.
>>
>>17952
>I've never done any serious walking
>serious walking
w-what?
>>
It's just a long uphill walk anon. Nice views though, you'll enjoy it.
>>
>>17958
Walking while frowning. Duh.
>>
>>17952
>I never accomplished anything
>I lack the self determination necessary to literally go outside and walk around
>Help me

Yeah, nah.
>>
>>17954
yes to a degree. we're talking about mountains. people die on mountains.
>>
>>17962
just bring a bag containing chocolates and bottles of water and you'll be fine
>>
>>17952
it's never too late to start. there are risks with doing any type of hike, small and sometimes larger. assess the risks and and prepare accordingly.

from wiki Snowdon seems quite tame. but always prepare somewhat for the worst. know the area and know. bring more water than you'll need. and dont pack too heavy(dont pack in dumb useless shit)

when i hiked up mount Washington i wasnt dressed correctly, luckily nothing came of it but i know better for next time i'm stuck in an alpine zone for an extended period of time.
>>
>>17952
If that's pic related, there's a rail going up too...

No biggie. Just take some raisins and nuts and 1 l water, and good shoes. Take more water like 1.5 liters if it's very warm and get some dissolvable pills to fix electrolyte balance if it's very warm and you're a fat bastard or sweat a lot or think you'll die on the slope.
>>
keep in mind even if you dont make it as far as you thought you would on your hike your parents arent right about you not being ready
>>
>>17952
Snowdon isn't at all bad. I just used tennis shoes ('trainers') on one of the more difficult routes. Just be sure to check the weather. For me it rained the entire way down
>>
We used to push our mountainbikes up snowdown so we could ride down the ranger path when we were teenagers. You're just walking up a footpath for about 1-2 hours - no seracs, no big cliffs to fall of, no avalanches haha. Stop being a wet towel all your life, bloody hell.

Just grab a waterbottle and just walk up it maybe?
>>
I'd practice climbing an easier mountain. Get experience. Less risk if you fuck up.

SORT YOURSELF OUT
>>
Make sure you bring extra meals and maybe a tent in case you get stranded at the summit
>>
>>17952
Just grab a bottle of water, maybe something to snack on and go.
Check the weather first because rain sucks and drains your soul if you get it in your first outings.

Take your camera and grab some photos to show to your parents since they seemingly never left the house.
>>
>>17964
Mt Washington is no joke. The mountain itself is pretty tame, as far as mountains go. It's the weather that kills people. You may start the hike at 65 degrees and sunny and by the summit it's 25 degrees with 80mph winds.

During summer it's not nearly as bad, but spring and fall it can get crazy.

The peak had the highest wind speed ever recorded for many years, and when they recorded thay measurement their equipment maxed out, even though they could feel the wind gusting even faster than their reading. 231 Mph winds are no joke.
>>
>>17957

This anon nailed it.
>>
>>17952
I did it as a kid and was fine, they have a shop halfway up, shit my friends unicycled down it for charity.
Maybe go with a friend but it's just a day trip nothing to really worry about.
>>
I'm thinking of going on a small solo hike up a mountain soon. It's a bit of a toughy, but I want to challenge myself. I have a fear of doing things by myself because I've always had other people to handle situations for me. I have to do something to force myself to grow up. I think solo hikes and camps are the something.
>>
>>17976
Go wild camping first, stay local ish, I always take doggo for company.
I do feel somewhat exposed completely on my own though.

It's.like you want him to die of hypothermia
>>
>>17976
I started going on solo road trips for the same reason. I can't stress enough how much I've grown from going out and experiencing things alone.

I really, really hope you go for it anon.
>>
>>17963
underrated
i almost fell out of my fucking chair
>>
>>17969
>I'd practice climbing an easier mountain.
Snowdon has hard routes and easy routes and a train to the top if OP gets a blister. As long as he's fit enough and brings a jacket in case it gets cold, it sounds ideal.
>>
>>17979
You could buy Mount Everest and convert it into a private park.
>>
>>17957
This. You should do it just to see if you can. Best case you have a good time and prove you can push yourself further than you thought. Worst case you get tired and come down early.

The only losing answer is not to play.
>>
>>17976
Yup me too. I solo primitive camped for about 5 days in the semi remote wilderness (kinda close to a city, but far enough down a quad trail that I didn't see anyone that whole time.) Planned my gear/meals/location and had a blast. Usually I camped with my dad and he sorted out everything which was nice, but also at this stage in my life I should be doing these things on my own.

I ended up over packing, but it was easy as fuck. My family was freaking out thinking I would freeze or die or something. It really wasn't that bad. I had my Coleman tent and some tarps for added barriers. It was kind of like a grown up blanket fort. 10/10 would do again. Hopefully for longer next time. I had enough food and water to last another week probably, but the trail I used to get up was rougher than expected and snow was expected the day after I went home.
>>
>>17957

Harsh, but probably accurate.
>>
>>17952
>mount Snowdon
>1.085 m
Yeah you don't need anything special for doing that, anon, just go for it.
Just have a bottle of water, a snack or so, and maybe a headlamp depending on the hour of the day you're thinking doing it.

Hope you enjoy it and start going /out/ more.
>>
>>17952

nah a sherpa did.he just followed the rope.

I've done ben nevis a few times. Live in Glasgow, first time I was 11 and went with my school, we went up no problem, then 13 with school again, then a year ago with my kids. Nothing about them is hard.

The hardest one I've done is Goat Fell on Arran, some times, depending on weather, it feels like the mountain wants to kill you.

>pic related
is Crib Goch, where people need to be taken from by helicopters regularly, not to mention other places. Himalayan mountaineers practice there. Some people took this path because on the map it looked shorter, and low clouds prevented them from seeing the ridge. You can get quick weather changes out there as well.

Sure, the route from Llanberis is nice and easy steady slope, but you always should give it some look before you go with shorts, chocolate and water bottle.

As for OP, just use common sense. Have a map, or even a website printed route sketch, no matter how easy it seems. Watch the weather or be prepared for everything, otherwise don't be afraid or ashamed to go back.

>If that's pic related, there's a rail going up too...

Not OP here - that's Snowdon in Wales. Nice walk from a multitude of angles.

Long wander go up from Llanberis.

Steep and quick take the Pyg track or Watkin path.

Most challenging go up from pen-y-pass and head over Crib Goch.

Or be a pussy and get the train.

im a regular to north wales , some comfy boots, water, food, waterproofs in your bag, a sense of direction and off you go, snowdon isnt the best there are far more quieter mountains that offer amazing views, i took my mate last year wild camping there ,he is 30 and never been up a mountain before, now hes hooked, get out an learn by doing
>>
>>17973
it was 87f at pinkham visitors when i started out. when we got up into the alpine closer to the peak it was zero visibility and 40f with very strong wind gusts.
>>
>>17978
In the book it talks about how he spent about 12 months looking for sponsors after he broke his back and was in the SAS.
>>
>>17952
Ok, UKfag here. If you go up Snowdon in the middle of summer then you'll probably be fine. There will be lots of people around and as long as you dont break an ankle, you'll be fine. It's fucking snowdon.

HOWEVER, I think if you have to ask, you're not prepared.

There's a difference to asking about specific items/techniques etc but flat out asking an anonymous online message board about whether or not you can climb a mountain with no previous experience or any idea of equipment etc probably means that you don't know enough about what you're about to do.

I would take a waterproof, a decent pair of boots, some quick drying trousers top etc, map and compass. You'd be better off working up to it maybe. Where in the UK do you live?
>>
>>17957
Can we knight this guy?
>>
Mate you are a fully grown man. All you need its your lunch and a drink even thats optional because there is a cafe at the top! Just don't go up the "pro climber" route because thats where retards go to fall off and die.
>>
>>17997
You're overthinking it. Anon is clearly high anxiety and being enabled by his parents. A light walk up a mountain path isn't going to hurt him.
>>
Llanberis and Miners' path(?)(May be mixing that up with another one) are the easiest ways up.
Go up one of those if it's your first time.
