Couldn't agree more. I do have a Blackhawk pack and Condor gear but otherwise my stuff is surplus.

Thanks for bringing race into it? I guess i never have seen a nigger while out. The real problem is yuppies.

I run into them here in MS. The ones that hang /out/ are pretty cool. I wouldn't know how to correctly remove the musk glands from a racoon or make an opossum edible if not for my naturally camouflagedbrothers. Many of them are God-tier deer hunters and bass fishermen who use age old methods that you won't know unless you show mutual respect.

>>14610
>environmentalism is good, but man made global warming is faker than 9/11
I'm a scientist. I think you hear too many times from the black sheep of the scientific community shooting their mouths off. That being said, I think alarmists aren't so bad because by the time you sufficiently define what's going on we're gonna be seriously fucked and not able to do much about it. There are 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 year climate cycles going on in this equation as well. It's a very tough thing to properly model. That being said, just look at the amounts of CO2 getting put out and the amounts of forest that have been removed and you see the equation is unbalanced. If we want to keep living I think we need to start limiting populations. People freak out when populations aren't growing but there are a huge number of humans in the world already. I wonder if many of us not having kids these days is a natural limiting factor. Still we just bring in immigrants from other places where they should die off naturally and keep adding to our problems...

>Everyone should carry a firearm while /out/. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it
not for most /out/ users. Ironically I probably should but it's a bit of a hassle for me so I just carry bear spray. 9/10 times the bear spray should be sufficient.

Batonning is not a youtube thing that just popped up. I can generate firewood fast batonning with my 6 inch blade, while an axe would help esp if I had to drop some standing dead wood I just don't need it where i'm /out/ since wood is so abundent.

And while minimalist over priced gear is a meme packing light is not. I've seen dudes lug around so much dumb shit for no fucking reason.
>>
>>14609
>Expensive gear is NOT better than Milsurp and spending any more money on gear than necessary to essentially be poor is stupid

wrong. It depends on the gear, and while milsurp is a good source of cheap gear, you're much better off wearing proper thermal layers, than civil war era surplus longjohns.
As it is, much of military gear is chosen for how cheap it is to outfir huge numbers of people, compared to proper gear.
There's a reason you don't see mountain climbers (think Everest, or K2) running around in milsurp M65 Jackets and WWII-vintage milsurp gear.

>batoning

batoning is a meme is a meme. Modern steel, that's properly heat treated, can easily withstand that kind of action, and you don't need 1/4'' thick slabs of steel either. Having an axe or hatchet is definetely something you should consider, but a well made knife is not going to break after batoning a small stick, and you can split larger logs by making wedges.

>minimalist

Again - depends. The more you know, the less you carry.
>>
>>14653
>There's a reason you don't see mountain climbers (think Everest, or K2) running around in milsurp M65 Jackets and WWII-vintage milsurp gear.

Yeah, sponsors and because military gear isn't designed for something like K2. That doesn't mean it's not good enough for going /out/.

Basically finds bear spray is 99% effective and no one has ever been killed in Alaska by a bear when they've used bear spray.

Guns are about 80% effective, with quite a few deaths by bears when using a gun as defense. Waving your arms and yelling also had about an 80% effective rate.

You could say that about many things. I could count the times I've felt unsafe /out/ on one hand and a gun would have made me felt better maybe once. If I wanted to add something safety related to my gear I'd rather go with some radio, satellite telephone or other mean of emergency communication.

Also only about 10% of forests were harvested in the last ~60 years, we're using more and more non-wood material so the demand for it is lower. And the 10% (i got it off wikipedia) is probably off, as trees do grow back if you let them.

And about the population 'problem' the only problem is africa, india and china (maybe brazil). We can solve africa by not giving them aid and not letting them leech off our systems, for others i do not know.

Immediate issue here is in the methodology. Hunters who have guns are more likely to be in more remote locations where the natural bear population hasn't been selected against for violence against humans (the reason bear populations close to human population centers are increasingly less dangerous). Hikers with bear spray are more likely to be where bears are less dangerous and the population has actively been culled of the most violent bears.

The only other study I've seen on the matter asks whether a gun "repelled" the bear or not, which is not the purpose of a gun in a life and death defensive situation against an aggravated animal.
>>
>>14718
Idk I just don't see a reason to. I don't take anything super heavy, 99% of the time if I take something I either take a small takedown .22 rifle or have a revolver on my hip.

Neither of those weigh that much.

Yea the thing is CO2 levels do increase the rate of photosynthesis but there is a saturation point. So past a certain point you're just wasting your time and fucking up the atmosphere by increasing CO2 levels any further. It will be limited by other factors involved in photosynthesis such as light and water instead.

He is kind of right, though. Only it doesn't stop at grizzly bears. It extends to moose, boar, wolves, and other types of bear. All in all, it's not a bad idea to have a 10mm in your pack, but it's unnecessary to go overboard on the artillery end of things.

It's real, but I really can't blame the layman for not knowing what to think. There is too much BS floating around out there for people not plugged into the scientific community to know what is really going on. In short, people on both sides stand to make/lose a lot of money on this issue, and they're going to shill for their side.

The good news is that we can probably mitigate it.

>>14611

Everyone should carry a firearm while /out/. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it
Unless you're somewhere like IL where you are risking years in federal pound me in the ass prison.

I carry one pretty much everywhere I go, whether /out/, in town, or just loafing around the house. I've had more issues with two legged critters wanting to get violent than I have four legged critters.

Not with modern agriculture in play. Even ancient ag has fucked a lot of places up. It has been posited that we could mitigate a lot of our CO2 emissions with restorative agriculture. The claim hasn't been tested, but there is some sound reasoning behind it, because good restorative ag has to focus on building soil, and building soil means putting organic matter (read: carbon rich) into it. Keep in mind that places like the Middle East weren't always sandy desert shitholes. People did a lot of that, and prior to modern times too. We have been hurting the planet's ability to store the excess carbon we spew out.

And besides, literally nobody I know has done anything to curb their emissions. They talk about it but when I say go look at your electricity bills for the last ten years and tell me has your consumption gone up or down it is always up.

People talk the talk but they have zero interest in sacrificing quality of life for lower emissions. This is a runaway train we see not going to stop - why worry about it? Fuck

if the ice caps melt all that water goes to the equator which makes for some 2012 shit before the planet and oceans sync their cycles again

>Saddam draining the swamps

It wasn't for farmland. The swampy areas in southern Iraq had a mostly Shi'ite population and during Iraq's war with Iran in the '80s he was terrified they'd ally with Iran and sabotage him because he was Sunni. The draining went hand in hand with using chemical weapons to kill them or drive them out.

>also, poppies
That's an Afghanistan problem, not so much an Iraq problem.

I grasp them just fine. You seem to make them up.

In your world we move to Antarctica.

In the real world, water isn't fucking spun out and concentrated at the equator, that's fucking stupid. Look up the geode. Fuck off. Fuck. What an I even arguing on 4chan for. Jesus you're a fucking idiot. Fuck.

so, are you a bum, tramp, or hobo?

Gortex/Thinsulate/Faux Leather/pretty much every other synthetic material for boots (except special purpose rubbers) is absolute hot garbage and not worth the money.
Nothing beats a quality pair of low seam, full grain leather boots. They will always be waterproof (with proper care) over their 10+ year lifespan, much more durable, repairable, aesthetic, breathable and environmentally friendly.
Synthetic boots are none of these things. Minor thorns, slightly jagged rocks, and more than a cup of water fucks their shit up. Good luck keeping them waterproof+breathable for more than a year. Good luck keeping them in a decent shape for more than 1-3 years. Top tier synthetics not even that much cheaper (some more expensive) than a decent leather boot, which is a whole magnitude better.

In fact, in my experience I find almost all synthetics lacking compared to a "natural" counterpart, in terms of my outdoors needs.

The main problem with soil in Iraq and Syria is that people have been farming there forever. Shit is depleted, and worse, salty. The constant irrigation leads to salt buildup in the soil which can only be flushed away by rain. Some areas are just naturally salty, or poor for growing anything. Not even gonna go into lack of swamps + brush/forest.

Archaeologists would argue that out of Africa/Mesopotamia is wrong.

i hike/camp in Ocala, Fl. Lots of degenerate druggies and convicts are known to live in the area. I talked to a couple locals who worked at nearby springs who told me about the crazy fuckers known as the rainbow people out there so yeah that's why I carry. And the fact that there have been monster bears spotted in the area.
