I run into them here in MS. The ones that hang /out/ are pretty cool. I'm a scientist. I think you hear too many times from the black sheep of the scientific community shooting their mouths off. That being said, I think alarmists aren't so bad because by the time you sufficiently define what's going on we're gonna be seriously fucked and not able to do much about it. There are 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 year climate cycles going on in this equation as well. It's a very tough thing to properly model. That being said, just look at the amounts of CO2 getting put out and the amounts of forest that have been removed and you see the equation is unbalanced. If we want to keep living I think we need to start limiting populations. People freak out when populations aren't growing but there are a huge number of humans in the world already. I wonder if many of us not having kids these days is a natural limiting factor. Still we just bring in immigrants from other places where they should die off naturally and keep adding to our problems...

wrong. It depends on the gear, and while milsurp is a good source of cheap gear, you're much better off wearing proper thermal layers, than civil war era surplus longjohns.
As it is, much of military gear is chosen for how cheap it is to outfir huge numbers of people, compared to proper gear.
There's a reason you don't see mountain climbers (think Everest, or K2) running around in milsurp M65 Jackets and WWII-vintage milsurp gear.

I'm from northern Europe and have never felt the need to have a firearm while out, I assume it's an American thing. Could someone explain to me or help me reason about why it's necessary to bring a gun while out in America while here you only bring your gun if you're hunting. Also only about 10% of forests were harvested in the last ~60 years, we're using more and more non-wood material so the demand for it is lower. And the 10% (i got it off wikipedia) is probably off, as trees do grow back if you let them.

Hunters who have guns are more likely to be in more remote locations where the natural bear population hasn't been selected against for violence against humans (the reason bear populations close to human population centers are increasingly less dangerous). Hikers with bear spray are more likely to be where bears are less dangerous and the population has actively been culled of the most violent bears.

The only other study I've seen on the matter asks whether a gun "repelled" the bear or not, which is not the purpose of a gun in a life and death defensive situation against an aggravated animal.

Not with modern agriculture in play. Even ancient ag has fucked a lot of places up. It has been posited that we could mitigate a lot of our CO2 emissions with restorative agriculture. The claim hasn't been tested, but there is some sound reasoning behind it, because good restorative ag has to focus on building soil, and building soil means putting organic matter (read: carbon rich) into it. Keep in mind that places like the Middle East weren't always sandy desert shitholes. People did a lot of that, and prior to modern times too. We have been hurting the planet's ability to store the excess carbon we spew out.

Gortex/Thinsulate/Faux Leather/pretty much every other synthetic material for boots (except special purpose rubbers) is absolute hot garbage and not worth the money.
Nothing beats a quality pair of low seam, full grain leather boots. They will always be waterproof (with proper care) over their 10+ year lifespan, much more durable, repairable, aesthetic, breathable and environmentally friendly.
Synthetic boots are none of these things. Minor thorns, slightly jagged rocks, and more than a cup of water fucks their shit up. Good luck keeping them waterproof+breathable for more than a year. Good luck keeping them in a decent shape for more than 1-3 years. Top tier synthetics not even that much cheaper (some more expensive) than a decent leather boot, which is a whole magnitude better.

In fact, in my experience I find almost all synthetics lacking compared to a "natural" counterpart, in terms of my outdoors needs.
