So next weekend I embark in a 3-4 day kayak trip in 10,000 islands FL. I will be launching from goodland and spending the first night on Coon Key. This is the first time I have gone island camping.
My long time friend will be accompanying me in a single person kayak rated for open water. I will be using the Helios 2 inflatable in the picture. So any advice? Ive done desert camping, backpacked numerous ranges, retired army.

Bump with random mangrove pic.

We did about 7miles this day

Coon key from launch is only 2.5 miles
>>
I'll be using a Hennessey hammock
Fishing equipment, snorkeling shit, spear gun & sling.
Only plan on bringing 2 MREs and just eating off what I catch
>>
>>613935
Bring 4 MRE's for safety's sake
>>
>>613919
have enough rations in case you're stranded, first aid kit, flare, and most of all, lots and lots of potable water

Not dude you were replying to. But I'd say to bring a couple extra and say fuck pride. Hubris has an interesting way of always showing up for the party. Get caught in a storm. Strange medical accident. Loss of equipment. Several reasons off the top of my head. And I've never even been oceanic kayaking before. Don't end up like those 14 year old faggots from fl that got washed out to see or god knows what. You'll end up some pirates sissy boy.
>>
>>613931
holy shit florida is a weird place
>>
>>613919
Not even trolling, but be careful of sharks. The Bay of Florida is so shallow that there's a good amount of sea grass which attracts fish and therefore the bigger fishies (sharks) that like to snack on smaller fish. You'll be fine in a kayak but I wouldn't swim in those waters
Source: I've spent a good bit of time in the Everglades and seen them
>>
>>613919
i hear alot about people who go to small islands expecting paradise end up sharing their holidays with a fuckton of rats.
>>
OP here
>>613998
I guess 2 more MREs couldn't hurt.

>>614004
I have flares, a descent first aid kit I have built up over the years. I do plan on bringing 200 FLoz of water. And along with the MREs about 15-20 protein bars

>>614178
Yea those kids where fuck bois, they where even in a whaler and managed to fuck up.
I've never lost equipment, and plan on having everything tied down on the paddle out so shit land with all my equipment and depart with all my equipment. I usually do like 2 shake down before leaving.

>>614183
Yea I can say Florida is weird but so is LA where I've been living for the past 2 years, and Chicago even has it weird parts, isn't that just weird

>>614313
I do plan on bringing my bang stick, I noticed some black tips & makos chasing mullets last time I went kayaking in the inner coastal. Granted the dorsal gin wasn't giant but I will be cautious when snorkeling,

>>614320
I am expecting to hang all my food/water from trees at night. Will also have a shitty plastic glock to shoot some of these island rats if I get bored.

Later today I plan on inflating my kayak and test packing it so I can have a even weight bow to stern

Get a comfy seat. I take people on kayak trips all the time and the biggest complaint I hear on long trips are about the seats.

Pretty nice have fun take some pictures and post when you get back. I have a planned trip later this year for me and a bud to kayak across the Long Island Sound to CT and back for a weekend.

Got a patch kit for that inflatible yak? Hope so

Have you practied getting into your kayak in deep water? I have never used an inflatible kayak before so it may be a little different than a normal kayak or SOT.
>>
>inflatable kayak in the open ocean

Please get a radio. You never know what can happen.
A friend of mine and his gf did what you are doing for a weekend and nearly drowned when the current between the islands they were going between started pushing them out of sight of land.

There's so many different ways things can go wrong. I don't doubt you know what you're doing but my friend had plenty of previous experience until the one time things went dangerously bad for him.
His radio saved his life and his girlfriends. They are like $200 but considering the stakes, I'd say it's definitely worth it. If anything, you never need it and you can lend it to friends/family who maybe will.
>>
Happy to see some Floridians besides myself on /out/, would never do island kayaking though fuck that.

Have you lived in Florida a while? If so you should know that the weather changes quickly, so much so that I wouldn't even consider such an outing even in the colder months. But hey you seem to know your shit so glhf m8.

Also no dry bags? The hell man. Pic related was the raft trip we took, Indian River Lagoon last summer

The kayak does have a ruter that is controlled by my feet so yea it is an inflatable and would be all over the water do to no heel but the ruter makes up for it alot.

Picture is boat I just picked up to start diving

Florida born, Chicago raised. Spent every summer down here, past couple years been living in socal. I'm currently staying up by ocala visiting the parents and taking a break from work

>>615515
Referring to water depth shouldn't be any deeper then 1.6M I've practiced getting in & out and its pretty easy. I keep my hand belge near by when I get in because water always finds a way. Also I do have a patch kit. The kayak material is that of white water rafts and the interior is the same as a zodiac.

Lol I'm not really sweating if I don't have a radio will have tide charts and detailed maps so unless a freak storm forms, I should be find without one. The radio retailed around 300$new and spent 109$ to win the auction.

>>615815
I have yet to actually enter the Ocala woods other then the shooting range. I hear that a bunch of people live in those woods tho.

>200 FLoz of water
so I guess that converts to 6L/6Quarts more or less. I somehow feel you're underestimating the importance of water still. You never know what could happen in the ocean. some sort of desalination system would be nice to have in a worst case scenario.
>>
What types of fish can be caught around these islands?

Yea good point, I'll probably stop and pic up 2 gallons of fresh water at publix on my ride down to the launch point. Also planning on using a 5gallon bucket and smaller 2.5gal bucket to make a solar desalination just as a back up. I've had success with that set up before and will be a good back up

>>616006
I have no idea, little sail cats maybe small grunts or redfish. Really hoping to catch a small shark.also it is blue crab season rn so I did see alot of smaller guys by mangroves so may end up snorkeling for those guys as well. What ever we catch I'll document and most likely eat that day.

>>616017
Oh thanks anon I didn't know grammer was important when I'm on one of them der islands. Google speech does wonders doesn't it
>>
I would never trust an inflatable kayak.

I have been through the 10,000 islands in my kayak. It scrapes bottom sometimes. There are mangrove branches that can puncture the sides/bottom.

I hope you have a great time.

Eat at Stan's in Goodland. Stan died, but his old place is still open I think.

The fucking mosquitos are awful in the mangroves. I don't know how you are going to sleep
>>
>>616098
Tea tree oil does wonders at repelling bugs. I will take you up on stans and eat there after the trip. The kayak draws little water about 3-4.5in. I do take precautions when in shallow waters like 10,000 islands. Last time I ran a ground I stuck my hands down so fast to stop damn barncales tore threw my gloves and cut my hand pretty good but had enough super glue to stop the bleeding
