tl;dr - What cool stuff have you gotten at thrift stores?

I got an old 1qt aladdin stanley themos (I think from 1984 if the 84 on the bottom is a year stamp) with a 2 piece pour through stopper at a thrift store for $4.

I was curious how well it worked for cold shit, so I filled it with ice. It's been about 100 degrees the past 3 days here in california, and there's still ice in the thermos a full 72 hours later. pic isn't mine, the finish is a little better on mine, just didn't feel like taking a picture.

Funnily enough I found the exact same thermos in a thrift shop/Salvos, fuck these things are GOAT, mine's been accidentally ran over and only got a scratch from it. The amount of brand new/rarely used shit people donate to these stores are ridiculous.

I never buy anything at a thrift shop that I eat off/out of. I realize this is just my personal hangup really, but I assume everything in a thrift shop has been pooped-in and cummed-on at least fourteen times.
>>

a few months ago I got a thermarest prolite for $7. As far as I could tell, it was brand new.
The only problem with the thermos was it was dirty as shit inside. Some hot water and dish soap shaken around in it and it was good to go.

I also found merrel moab mids in my size that were also almost new for $10.
>>
>>609007
the walls of the thermos were stained with brown substance. The guy very well could have shit in it for all I know. My guess is hot chocolate. soap does a good job at cleaning up shit stains though.
>>
>>609015
but you'll never really know if you're ingesting microscopic particles of fæces every time you put your lips to that thing
>>
>>609005
Probably a lot of people losing their homes and having way too much shit to fit into their next residence.
>>
>>609021
I'm pretty sure boiling hot water and dish soap will remove microscopic shit particles.
But just so you know, the air is filled with shit particles no matter where you are. You're constantly breathing them in, and all of your food is covered in them.

What I like to do is run the tip of my penis around the outside of the cups.
I don't mean before I donate the cups: I do this in the thrift store to the stuff that is there.
>>
>>609007
>I never buy anything at a thrift shop that I eat off/out of
I totally agree with you, well to be far I never bought anything used. ;_;
>>
>>609001
I know a place that consistently had this kind of stuff for cheap where I used to live. White collar city. Forget about it in a blue collar town. Also avoid the newer ones with the glass vacuum tube. I learned the hard way when one shattered on me.

Got a pair of pic related never used with the price tag on it for $4 (mum volunteers there so employee discount :^) ) and according to their website they still ask for $70 for a pair, dog bless thrift shops.
>>
>>609024
And having a relative die and having an overwhelming amount of shit to get rid of.

>>609007
You can clean even ebola off that stuff, but out of principal I won't wear second hand Jocks/Socks or shoes.
>>

The glass is better...more fragile, but for the intended purpose, you don't want anything BUT glass.

I've got some lightweight poly backpacking pants from goodwill, various wool sweaters. A hat. Clothes, mostly...i'm not averse to buying housewares from there (in fact, that's exactly how I got my barware) but I've never really found anything fantastic for backpacking.

I didn't know Stanley and Aladdin were related. My father has an Aladdin thermos.

> 100% Fine Cashmire x2

$21 total just yesterday, these are like $65/ea new.

No reason you can't wear the best /wool out/!

Get some soda crystals and put a table spoons worth in the bottom, then fill the thermos right up to the top with hot water, leave it for an hour then clean it out in the normal way with hot water and dish soap, this works for coffee/tea stained cups and tea pots.

So this becomes a merino vs. cashmere fight?

> merino not alpaca

Also from Savers, ~$11.
So what now?

Me and a buddy like to do thrift runs from time to time here in Phoenix. We have this route lets us hit like 5 places, mostly you just browse the bullshit but sometimes you score. Anyways, blog over. I found a pair of Merrells, a little older but in incredible shape, these fuckers had goretex and vibrams soles, and the they actually fit my big feet. I love em, wore em /out/ several times and gonna break them in hard next week at elk camp.

tl;dr found some $140 Merrells for 14.99

Bought a mint Trangia set for $10, it was still in the box and there was not burn marks on the burner, thing had never even been lit!, same set goes for over $100 on Amazon.
>>
>>609007
Ya I'm sure the Chinese fuckers that get paid 0.12/hr don't jerk off into your "new" and "clean" full priced products.
>>
>>609899

They don't have the time, probably.

I worry more about contamination by machine oil and whatnot.
>>
>>609910
it's still better than sitting in an old person's house for 60 years collecting dust, fumes, skin cells, hair, etc. Nevermind whatever's been put into/onto the stuff deliberately.

My dad was a logger when I was little, and I remember him always filling one of those thermoses up with coffee before he went off to the woods.
